Would never wait 10,000 miles personally.

First change, which I did myself was at 1,000 miles, second change was at 5,000 miles and then every 5,000 miles thereafter. All are with M1 EP 0w20 and Toyota OEM oil filter and drain bolt crush washer. 30 minute job in my garage.

I payed the dealer to have mine done at 3k. The sticker on my truck says next change is 8k, so either they don't adhere to the 10k or they screwed up. I plan on doing 1 a year regardless of mileage. The 8k one will be my 10k service on them.

Agreed, I waited as well. I took it in at 5000 cause I thought that was the first one and was talked out of it by service manager. Seemed odd, seeing how I was going to pay out of pocket, they literally turned away money.

A lot, if not even the majority of drivers in some areas will fall under "severe duty" conditions. This means you should be changing the engine oil every 5k miles, per the manual. 5k oil changes are cheap insurance, and you dealer will change it at 5k if you tell them your truck falls under these conditions. We did pay for the 'free' oil changes after-all. 2 oil changes is 2 oil changes, whether it be 5 and 10 or 10 and 20.

Exactly my plan. Although I am not sure about the 30 minutes. I have the TRD skid plate which I believe needs to come off to get to the drain plug. Not a huge deal but will slow the process a little. Not sure why they didn't include an access hatch in the skid. And the awkward location of the filter. I can change the oil in my Tacoma in about 15 minutes what with the top mount filter and uncovered oil pan. I will miss that.

I did mine at 1087 miles. Not really a huge fan of early oil changes especially since I never have a vehicle longer than 40k miles since 2007. I figured screw it. Turbo motor that is way too much fun to push the pedal into the engine bay I should do it.

Personally I’ll never run engine oil for 10k miles… can it last? Yes I’m sure it can, but for the price it’s not worth pushing limits, also consider that manufacturers make their money long term with repairs and parts sold, that leads me to believe that they don’t have the consumers best interest when they preach this maintenance interval, plus these are under perfect conditions and fluid temperature not exceeding xxx there’s fine print and that goes with any of the systems

I stand with the side that says Toyota does not use "break in oil" I used to work for American Honda and in 2011 when I purchased a new Element, I called on some contacts I had with Honda to ask about getting an early first oil change. A waste of time and money, I was told. Today's engines don't require or benefit from using a non detergent oil for break in.
Since my Tundra was used for towing the dealer allowed me to get my free oil changes at 5,000 mile intervals but I would only get the same number of free services than normal operations would get.
As far as going 10K between changes, under the best conditions you will be fine. Short trips, cold weather, heavy loads or towing need to be considered in your decision on determining when to change your oil.

I won't go 10k miles - oil changes every 5k miles on my 4runner, done by yours truly along with suspension and drive shaft lubrication. I also replace diff and tcase fluid every 30k.

Lots of great videos on YouTube showing engine tear downs on Toyota engines with 10k oil change intervals - this one is particularly informative. 10:53 if you want to skip to the portion highlighting the oil build up and damage to the cylinder walls.

With the TRD skid, it’s even faster. You have a trap door that simply unscrews to drain oil and remove filter.

OK, cool. I haven't gone under to look yet. But I saw a youtube where they said they had to remove the TRD skid and made no mention of the access door?? I'll crawl under this morning and have a look at mine.

My 2018 TRD limited did not t have the hatch for the filter, I sprung for a RCI skid plate that has one. That and a Fumoto valve for the drain and the oil change is easy. At least that way I know it’s being drained completely and filled up with the correct amount.

OK, I just went under and there is no hatch on the TRD ski plate. Not sure which Tundra and skid plate you have?? Mine's a big beast but I like how they have the slots such that you don't have to totally remove some of the bolts so that it drops on your head. Also saw that my truck doesn't have the active electronic air dam. Interesting.

Right or wrong, I waited and had them do it per the manual @ 10k. I feel like I mentioned this on a different thread, but they let me look at the drain pan & captured a small sample right as they cracked the plug. Neither looked to have any sheen to them indicating metal or anything else. In fact, the color was still very much a light amber to the thought it could've looked like new(ish) oil.

I just had my second oil change at 20k miles. As my driving patterns change back to in town, short trips I'll move back to 5k intervals. However, I've got 20k miles on a truck that is 13 months old. I run long trips at highway speeds for much of my driving. Short trips, towing, and living in a super cold climate are the worst on oil (IMO).

This debate is one of the oldest in automotive enthusiast circles.

Oh no, the 2023 TRD skid doesn’t have a trap door, that’s ridiculous. Have a 2019 and have a trap door on mine! Sorry about the confusion.

For additional piece of mind provide a ziploc bag for saving the old oil filter. I'm very impressed how little I've found trapped by the filter. The 5.7 is a well designed and built engine in my opinion.

I have always followed the manufacturer reccomendations on all of my Tundras and have never had a problem with any of them. Most people are so used to the 5,000 miles that was years ago and most vehicles today don't require an oil change every 5,000 miles. The first time I told my dad, he was so against it and just couldn't believe it because of what he was used to. Basically, do whatever you feel comfortable with, but I can assure you the manufacturer isn't in the business of tricking customers. Toyota would look bad if they gave customers information and it caused their vehicles to fail.

It has nothing to do with whether the oil can last 10,000 miles. The oil can easily last that long.

It has to do with the amount of crap in the oil. The dirtier the oil the more chance those "special" piston rings will get gummed up.

After that happens you will progressively be buying more oil anyways since the engine will then be burning it.

I just picked up a 23' Tundra and I decided to add a maintenance plan for 5k oil change intervals up to 4yr/55k miles. Adding 9 additional oil changes for $850 just made sense to me. I have no idea what will actually be "best" for long term reliability, but prefer an ounce of prevention over a pound of cure. FWIW I live in Idaho with cold winters, tow occasionally, and live on a dirt road.

Well, I just did my own first oil change at 2,300 miles. The oil was black! I'll let the dealer do the next one at 10k.

thanks for the info, I was wondering for those that did change it early, how it looked.

its cheap so Im going to stick with the 500-1000 miles plan I think

    How did you buy that?
I'm only aware of regular Toyota maintenance package, and it doesn't specify detailes regarding oil change intervals - seems like they'll just follow regular 10k intervals.

How did you buy 5k change intervals?

That would cause me concern. Here's my Castrol at 4,600 miles. 1,400 of that were towing a ~6,000# travel trailer. Pay no nevermind to the oil level. It was a yank and shoot picture. 20230123_152321.jpg
