How do you remove the lighter/power receptacle hinged cover?

I bought a pair of those anodized aluminum inserts that go into your lighter/power receptacles that says 'fire missile' and 'eject' on them. I know, they are silly. Anyway, I need to remove the plastic flip cover that comes on them stock. I have a 2012 double cab. I was hoping that they just popped off with a little effort, but I tried and am afraid I am going to break the plastic if I use any more force. They don't appear to have a pin going through them but maybe they do? Hoping someone has already done this and can help explain how to properly remove them so I can put them back on later if I wish. Thanks.

I believe you have to remove the socket from the trim panel, and then the hinged cover will remove from the back side.
That, or the hinge is molded into the socket mount and you’ve pretty much gotta break it to remove it. I can’t remember exactly at this point.

I’ve got one that I removed from the back of the console sitting around somewhere but I can’t remember which way they’re removable either. Or if the same setup would apply to 2007-2013. I’ll see if I can dig that up in a little bit, because now I’m curious.

Back to OP, Casey is correct that you have to remove the whole assembly to remove the door, if it’s even removable. I’d probably just break it off or cut it and plan to add USBs later on if you get rid of the inserts.

Remaining then from the trim panel involved a couple steps if I recall. Like the inner metal sleeve gets slid out by releasing or pressing a couple tabs, and then once it is out then the plastic housing tabs will release to slide it out.

I did read something about this for removing the entire assembly. I was hoping that wasn't necessary just to remove the hinged door. I think I even read that you are probably going to break the tabs to get the metal sleeve to release. I guess this is going to take a bit more work than I was hoping.

I’ve never broken the tabs removing the metal sleeve and I’ve done it a few times.
