I know what the manual says and I know what my dealer told me when I purchased the truck. I just don't think I can comfortably wait until 10k miles before I get the 1st oil change. I'm right at 2,100 now and I think I'll change it myself at 2,500

Highly recommend not running "break in oil" for extended periods. I didn't with my 5.7, and definitely wouldn't do it on a boosted motor. The $100 you spend could save you thousands.

Toyota does not use "break in" oil. But you should give the rotating assembly some time to run before the first change. Let the detergent in the oil and the filter do it job.

I called the dealer to ask if I could come in early for my first full service because I was going on a road trip, they told me I can’t come until I have 16,000kms. Can I bring it into a dealer in the states for service?

You can always go in but you will have to pay for any change earlier than 10,000 miles. The every 10,000 mile changes will still be free.

Going to follow the Toyota recommended plan….take it to Toyota for every service, had almost 300K on the 08 and did the same.

In the manual there is also a section on "severe duty" or something like that? It states if your vehicle falls into any of the listed criteria (almost every one does) than you should change it every 5000 miles. Also watch these videos.

The longest I’ve waited on an oil change on new vehicle (last 45 years) was on the tundra, 1200 miles. Then the free change at the dealer at 5 K miles. I aim for 5K changes but don’t worry if I go to 7K.

I drive so many highway miles (52k miles on my 2021) I change every 7k miles. I don’t worry too much about that.

Fwiw, when I called to schedule my first free oil change at about 700 miles, I was told they would not do it regardless of a limited number of free oil changes and how I chose to consume them. I argued and said "well you changed my 4Runner at 600 for the first time". They looked at the records and said "Nope, parts records shows no change was done until like 4500 or similar, our service writer just told you that we did it and printed out the paperwork for you". I was and still remain in the absolutely hateful toward dealerships camp. Only my second time to a dealership for service in my lifetime and I was lied to. First time, was when Ford designed those internal spring fuel fittings I had never known existed. Couldn't get a fuel filter out and took it to the dealership. I watched the tech who beat on the thing for about 40 minutes with a 3lb shop hammer because apparently he didn't know about the new fittings either. Then he went to lunch and came back with the little clamp over the tube "C" tool and like a magician easily removed the beat to wholly crap fuel filter and 15 minutes later I was billed about $60 for a punk to beat my truck to hell and back. Thankfully experience, service manuals, YouTube, and my tools usually get things done! Tire mounting, balancing and alignment are the only services I pay for.

And I would never step back into that particular dealership again. Can't believe they admitted to lying to you. That is messed up.

I usually do a first change at 1000 miles, and then every 5k thereafter. I plan to stick to that method with the Tundra.

Every 5K is what the working shop foreman at my dealer where I bought it recommended. (not a service advisor).

He said for the price of the oil and filter it was worthwhile.

Here is a funny one, after my 2 year maintenance service ran out on my 2019 Tacoma, the dealer I bought it from put a 5K oil change sticker on my windshield! (different dealer for that truck)

Do it now. How many start/stop and short trip cycles before you bought it? Those are what put most oils and engines under wear. I would also argue, this is the first TT engine put into a Tundra. Don’t listen to any other owner on this forum that doesn’t have the F35A engine. Their experience is worthless. TTs are hard on oil due to temps.

I waited 10k miles for my first oil change. Dealer recommended. Would almost guarantee 90% of Tundra owners did the same and there will be minuscule differences in engine performance and longevity between the early oil change versus 10k.

It's up to you but remember, they only care about the motor lasting up to the 5yrs/60,000 miles warranty. Then your problem is their gravy.

Depends on how long you keep your truck. Also, if it never made a difference, how much is your piece of mind worth? Got to spend your $ on something, and in the big scheme, this is not much.

My local Toyota dealership made me wait when I went in for my initial 5k to do my oil at 10k

I did mine a bit before 10k but would have waited till the 10k mark except for the fact I needed some warranty repair work done.

On the strength of having had 9 new-from-the-dealer Toyotas since 1985 the odds are waaaaay against your statement.

Mine will be used majority for business miles, so I will trade it in before 100k. Even if that were not the case I feel the odds of modern oil and normal driving are in my favor.

    I get that, makes sense

but in my mind if there is even a chance that it helps after 1000 miles just to make sure it’s all flushed out , then it’s only like 60-80 bucks , no big deal

I'm assuming that the 0W20 oil that the dealer uses is synthetic?

Peace of mind, I'll be changing it between 1000-1200 miles when I get my truck, especially since it'll be hauling our travel trailer this summer, I'll quickly do the break-in and then get the oil changed, and do it there after around 5k miles or 7-8k kms

I think 0W 20 is one of those viscosities that is only available in synthetic. I changed my oil the first time at 3k myself, now have 7k. Will probably look to schedule a dealership oil change around 8 or 9k. I have that parking brake recall outstanding so they can do that at the same time. I'm sure 10k intervals are fine with modern oils. Plus the sump is pretty big so there's a lot of it. I still have trouble letting go of the old days when we changed every 3k miles.
