I was informed there would be some sort of campaign to get the keys to owners in the coming month or so. How true this remains to be seen.

I could be wrong, but I believe the aftermarket keys are not "smart fobs." I haven't gone through the four pages of comments to see if this was already said yet, but the smart fobs provided by Toyota uses a semiconductor. I researched online and it doesn't look like any of the after market options are true "smart fobs" that have a semiconductor. As some of you probably already know, there is a mass shortage on semiconductors worldwide. The US only produces 12% of the worlds chips, 80% are from Asia with China making up the most. Everyone is fighting for them, Toyota is no different. These companies are also competing with the Department of Defense which needs semiconductors for damn near everything from vehicles to weapons to smart munitions. If it makes you feel better Toyota sacrificed a second key fob in the interim to makes sure they had enough for other vehicle features that many would expect or appreciate in a new vehicle.

For example, these features are absent from many vehicles from many manufacturers because of semiconductor shortages:

BMW: Numerous models have had touchscreen functionality removed as well as backup assistance technology in some cases

Chevy/GM: Numerous models missing HD radio, heated/ventilated seats and steering wheels, wireless charging, V8 cylinder deactivation, Auto Stop-Start (wish that was the case for us, lol).

    Ford: Some models, Satellite navigation.

Mercedes-Benz: Some models, premium audio, LED lighting, wireless charging, hands free rear access.

Porsche: 18-way adjustable seats and power adjustable steering wheel

Tesla: USB ports and passenger seat lumbar adjustments. Kind of funny you can’t charge a phone via USB in an electric vehicle.

Picked the truck up on 1/17. Was given one fob with no real timeline on the second.

Toyota sacrificed nothing. They decided selling more vehicles with only one fob was more important than giving customers the 2 fobs they paid for with their new vehicles. Quite the sacrifice…

What they did is literally the definition of sacrifice with the exception of the fact everyone will eventually get the second fob they paid for rather than it being gone forever and ever and ever! It's an inconvenience definitely, but there are valid reasons for why it's the case as evidenced by my entire comment. If given the option of either getting one key fob with the other coming at a later time, or power adjustable steering wheel, or any other feature requiring a semiconductor, I would pick the options and getting the second later all damn day long.

Do people really use the second one?? Mine has been in the safe since I picked up my truck last year.

Took delivery of our 2023 Tundra Limited at the end of November . . . Still waiting for 2nd fob and dealer saying no idea when it will be sent to us directly from Toyota.

But wait, not all "semiconductors" are the same or interchangeable. Almost certainly Toyota had no choice in which one or ones of the dozens of IC's in the tundra would be in short supply. Which ones are made in what volume is controlled by the fab houses surely. Maybe I'm wrong but I just can't see Toyota getting much say in another company business decision in which parts to run in what volume. I therefore conclude it's basically luck as to what Toyota gets or doesn't. Heck, does Toyota even manufacture the fobs or do they outsource to one of their bazillion suppliers? Correct me if I'm wrong

You're not entirely wrong. The vast majority aren't interchangeable. With that being said, Denso supplies Toyota's semiconductors. Denso is part of Toyota group so Toyota does in fact have a say in which ones are made and in what volumes. So instead of using production assets for a key fob semiconductor, they can shift to the ones they're most short in supply.

Good for you. Hope you don’t lose your 1 fob. Then your truck becomes a brick and cannot be driven.

As for your definition of sacrifice it’s skewed toward the manufacturer and not the customer. We will have to agree to disagree as I won’t argue further that point with you.

Toyota is forcing customers to sacrifice. I needed a 2nd fob. End of story.

Have you or anyone you know ever lost or broken anything? Dropped something in the water? Left the house with the keys to 2 separate vehicles in your pocket while someone at home needed to drive the other one?

Picked up my Tundra yesterday and got one fob. Dealer initially said March for the second, but then said, well, maybe April. Not sure they really know. BTW, these are some pretty cheesy fobs.

My salesman told me that he heard buyers purchasing an extra fob and it would come in quicker than waiting for the 2nd fob from Toyota ,,,?…

Like I said above, I don't think the secondary market fobs are true smart fobs. While that may bother some, I think most people would be fine with it seeing as it still has the basic features of remote lock and unlock

I bought a Toyota fob from a locksmith website. They stock them because Toyota dealers do not and people get into emergency situations. This was not an aftermarket fob. It came in a sealed Toyota package. People simply need to make sure they're buying an actual Toyota fob. It is quite simple, really.

I agree with war machine. If your big crisis in your life is one key FOB....you are over reacting

Luckily, I never said it was a big crisis because it isn’t. Forum people sure are a fickle bunch.

Not sure about the current Tundra smartkey, but both my 4Runner keys, both standard and smartkey were waterproof. There's a thread on t4r.org that shows the gaskets. I don't know what the actual rating is, but they're definitely both washing machine and "I'm going for a swim in the lake" safe.

I'm not sure it is. I took apart the fob to put the guts into an after market case and there was not gasket, only plastic edges.

Bought mine late November no word on my second fob from Toyota. I went on line and ordered a genuine fob from a Toyota dealer just received it today going to have it programmed next Tuesday for a $100.00 . I know it was an extra $250.00 but well worth it to me as sometimes my wife drives the truck too.
