Just read an amusing description of a Shun 'damascus' santoku.

The steel has 68 layers (34 per side).

Oh my - - That verbiage was from an email I got from KnivesShipFree (they're a good online knife store for anyone who gets disenchanted with the selections at Knife Center or Blade HQ). It was in the email, and not in the description on their site.

Clicking on the link, it's even better.
    Buy Shun Knives Classic H.G. Santoku Knife 7" - Ships Free - DM0718 (knivesshipfree.com)

"Steel: VG-MAX cutting core, 34 layers of stainless Damascus cladding per side (68 total)"

Sounds like they sandwiched a paper-thin slice of VG-Max (which I think is a Shun proprietary version of VG-10 Japanese steel) between two pattern-welded veneers. I guess they know what they're doing; but the marketing is great. Have I mentioned how easy it is to double your money?

I think it’s just a difficult problem counting with the metric conversion and all…:rofl::rofl::rofl:
    Maybe they couldn’t count?
It actually looks like a pretty decent knife.
The set of knives that I made for @ToyoMafia included this one as the original one that I sent as a prototype. 913 layers. The side pieces were separated from the core steel by layers of pure nickel

Pretty sure 7 and/or 8 was made after the drawing. And yes, some people are lucky to own two of those, and multiple other RT knives. @AZBoatHauler

I think you're right on that one...

ME: How many copies of this print will you be producing??

Vendor: There will only be 5 'signed and numbered' copies of the artists' original painting...

ME: Receive notice from vendor announcing the release of another 10 prints of the same painting...

ME: WTH???:mad::mad: I thought there would only be 5 copies???

Vendor: Yes sir, that is true there are only 5 signed and numbered copies of the original!

ME: Then what's the deal w/these other 10 prints???

Vendor: Sir, there are only 5 'signed and numbered' copies of the original; one of which you own... this new release is for 10 'artist proof' editions of the painting... they will have no impact on the value of your 'signed and numbered' copy

    These are called granton dimples.
I have some questions for my knife lovin brethren:
    Do you have them?
Do you really think that they make any difference?
    How much difference? And
What do they do for you?
I have read all about what they are supposed to do.C1B78F67-EF3C-4026-A9D6-F1E5A627FA5F.jpg

I've only ever used a super cheap knife with them and it made no difference. But again, it was a super cheap knife that I used in college. They look cool and I know they are supposed to help, but on the cheap thing it didn't matter

    No.

    Yes, you do.

I have them on a Cuisinart santoku that is my "everyone else uses this except me because I have a gosolo knife" knife. I believe they're supposed to help veggies stick to the blade less when dicing, but I honestly don't notice much difference between my santoku and my knives without the dimples.

I am making a chefs knife from ball bearings and it will leave a surface with shallow divots that should perform similar to the dimples. I like the look anyway so weather or not the dimples add to performance won’t deter me. I have always suspected that they might be more of a gimmick than anything else.
