What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Dropped the spare on the truck. Look at the date code on that bad boy

 

Got the winch and fair lead bolted on. Still haven’t found a great place for the relay box…….

 

I just have one of the multi-drawer organizer deals. Has a bunch of tiny drawers in it. I haven't accumulated a whole awful lot of stuff yet so it works for now.

My original spare was on my truck on the front right when I bought it and it had been there a little while. Didn't blowout somehow.

I just got some Stanley organizers at Home Depot for bicycle parts which I had kept in separate pegboard screw in plastic containers. Since I don’t have pegboard in the new garage. And those things were 20 years old by now.

@FrenchToasty I haven’t gotten to my winch install yet but there is a bracket I bought to mount the controller to. It looks nice. I can dig up a link if you want it’s for 3rd Gen Tacoma though so it might only work there. I had planned to only do a winch in the tundra for now but we will see once I get my slimline front in place on the 2016.

 

Yeah let’s see the link. I’ve also found a few sites that will make custom length relocation kits; I might try to do a bracket near the battery or master cylinder if I don’t find any other viable option

So I only have the 3G Tacoma manner mount. Looks like they make a 2G Tundra one and a 2G Tacoma one. I should try one or both of those. I’ll ask if they have any idea which might fit better.
they also have some RedArc brackets it seems. Cool.

 

Yeah I don’t know if any of those options will work, our trans cooler is in the way on the left, and my aux fan is in the way on the right side of the radiator.

 

Remind me which radiator you are running? The fan was for heat, yeah? Would not having that fan help with mounting spots?

I haven't looked over the bumper or grille for this enough yet. Figured I'd get the winch mounted and then see. Perhaps that is a dumb plan though.

Also need to figure out how to mount up the switch bracket since it's for a 3G Tacoma as well.

I just have the oem radiator with oem trans cooler. Yeah if the fan wasn’t there, I bet I would have more luck finding a spot on the right side.
I like that disco switch bracket, but damnit our coolant overflow tank is right there!

Thanks, it’s the smittybilt x20, the 10 or 12k? I’ve had it for a few years in the 4runner with zero hours of operation.
I’ve got plans for an old coil isolator as a thimble stop, which I’m just going to make my own eye and weave it back into the main line; less chances for failure.

 

I owe a closer look at my engine bay. Need to get a Switch-Pros 9100, my aux battery kit, RedArc bcdc, winch switch, midi fuse block, winch control and a headlight harness installed. I remember some space last I looked but the aux battery is going to chew up a lot of that.

Oh and looky there, RedArc has a really nice dual battery meter. Where to stuff it though.

My Tundra might be done by 2035? Maybe that’s too ambitious.

 

Notice a little shake on the the drive to Lowes this morning. Couple of clicks and pops too many for my taste. Got it home and checked front end and found some play on the outer tie rods, and on the driver side lower ball joint. Don’t know if that where the noises are comes from, but glad I checked. Stopped by the Toyota parts counter, they didn’t have any lower ball joints on hand, service guy said they just get em from Napa. Ordered up some parts, and standing by for delivery.

Dusted off the old Camry, got the oil changed and ready to assume daily driver duties until the truck is ready.

 

I too used the Griots. Worked great, lasted long, took a few reapplications.

I did the back bumper - just 1 coat & left under the tailgate undone to compare/contrast. Griot's for the win.

 

So it continually stays that dark? That’s great!

 

It worked legitimately that good for me. Really, the Meguair's product was a total letdown. The Griot's product worked very well. Does what it says, and quickly.

Yeah, I definitely have waaaay more hardware than would remotely fit in that. It'll take me at least 1-2 hours just to sort the hardware into steel vs. wood fasteners so I can spend another 2-3 hours breaking out into metric vs. standard. I'll hafta take a pic of what I've got right now, but I've got a handful of 10yo boys partying it up right now and can't open the shop.

Yeah, you're not alone there. I've noticed a wobble in my steering wheel at low speeds recently, steering wheel kicking left and right like I'm driving slowly across washboard roads. Probably need to check my rears and inflate my tires. Also noticed my driver side tire is wearing more than the others. More toward the outside. Just another reason to get the new UCA and COs in.

 

Napa LBJ?!? Yikes. Remind me never to go to that dealer for service.

Right, which is why it’s nuts that a Toyota dealer service dept would use aftermarket ones…

 

Not a lot of parts on hand for 15+year old models I'd guess and probably if you'd ask a customer they'll want it back the same day rather than wait 3 to use OEM parts.

 

Not the first time i've experienced it, had them do rear brakes on my boy's 100 Series Land Cruiser, all part numbers they used were from Napa.

Middle of nowhere Missouri dealer out here at the wood, cant get the parts in time, they go with napa for on the spot fixes is what i was told, or wait for the parts to come in. I decided to order my stuff myself. I cant speak to how other delerships handle their business, just my experience with the small town toyota at the wood.

 

Man, what happens when OEM LBJs go obsolete? Oh, that’s right, I need a new vehicle anyway.

 

Made some first tracks today while letting the boys run.

 

Got into what I thought was a fender bender. Crunched up my fender, no damage to the door or hood. Not much damage as I was only sliding at ~15mph. Turns out that instead of only being a couple hundred bucks in damage, it ripped my steering rack mount from the crossmember. Full on tore the steel apart. The truck is in alignment when in the air, but when on the ground the passenger side wheel tilts about 20 degrees out. The steering rack is now at an angle, and the right side is a few inches behind the right. Thinking it might be totaled. I don't think I've ever seen such a small crash do so much structural damage. Anyways I think I'm going to start looking into an 07-09 that originally had a 4.7, probably mix the two motors and put my blower on it. Might end up with a VVTi, 5 spd auto, cammed, supercharged 4.7 2nd gen if I can find the right donor body. I limped the truck up to a spot I can keep it but I'll grab pics when I have time.

 

I'm sorry about the 1st half but I'm loving the 2nd half of this post.
