3rd Gen aftermarket running boards, steps or sliders

I’ve been going through the threads on accessories but I’m just seeing a ton of OEM running board applications.

The new Tundra is ‘23 SR5 Off-Road premium. My kids are little and they can barely climb in. So I think some running boards, steps or sliders are going to be in the cards.

Has anyone found the consensus “good value” running board or slider set for the new Tundra?

I was looking at the Rough Country HD2 but they look like they stick out a lot. I’d like to be as tucked in as I can be while still having some function.

Got a set of Rough Country HD2 in my garage, just waiting for my tundra to put them on. Those are heavy and in good quality, it give you some room to adjust the boards so it won't stick out a lot if you don't want to. My only concern was there are only 3 brackets on each side instead of 4 on the OEM running boards.

And def go with bed liner finish if kids are involved.

I like them sticking out to prevent door dings from other cars

Yeah I got the slims but wished I got the regulars. Work fine for the kids but oh well its a truck, it’s gonna get dinged up

 

I went with go rhino also . Rb20 slims for a double cab though . Kind of short on my crew max. Awaiting correct ones to show up lol

 

Do you mind posting a picture from the front of the vehicle? I would like to see how far these come out from the cab.

 

These are Westin R5 Nerf Step. Pretty pleased with the quality & install, they stick a little further then I was planning however they are growing on me. (double cab)

 

I went with the GoRhino RB10’s, my wife is short so she really likes them, these are the stock size not the “slims”

 

Will these support the weight of the truck or will they roll up

 

LOL, no I would use these for hardcore off-road. But Ive been down a lot of unimproved roads in with similar in my old truck with no issues but I wouldn’t want to perch my truck up on something with these.

 

I grabbed a set of RC HD2 running boards as well. A few reviews mention that they rust relatively quickly. To avoid this I'm going to bring them to LineX and have them coated before I install them.

 

I did the rhino d6. I understand you wanting them slim but for a wife and kids and winter in Colorado I wanted good surface for a step. They mount on the back and too the frame and not the bottom where it will catch a rock, provide emergency protection at a lower price then a lot of options and give my short wife and young kids a step. I’ve had them on for 12k miles and one winter and am quite happy. If you have 2k to drop on real sliders get the cbi ones. RCI is nice but the way they angle up makes them useless as a step.

I have the HD2 as well. I called and complained about the 4th bracket and they sent them over to me. This was in March. Made a big difference. I had one side show some minor surface rust after a few month. They were great about sending a replacement set under warranty. I still have not swapped them out. I was waiting until spring. It is not noticeable. Some wire brush and flat black would fix it right up as a spare set. I set the truck down on it in Colorado while going down a steep hill and it survived. It was pretty soft dirt though.

 

What difference did the 4th bracket make?

 

I went with Romik. Had them adjusted on their highway setting but found it wasn’t good height wise to use and feet would hit the plastic rockers. Adjusted them down 1 setting (1”) and they’re great. 5 year warranty on the finish and made in Europe, not china so there’s that.

 

The attachment points under the doors are for four points, so there is not a center attachment. Two right and two left, so with the boards it leaves a "soft spot" in the middle of the boards. By adding a 4th bracket, it is rock solid.

 

Well, I hope using only 3 brackets doesn't affect the LineX coating (flex in the board that would cause the LineX to crack/ chip away) I'm putting on my HD2s.

 

I got these cheepo ones off Amazon. I have Predator steps on the 2021 and found them to be too narrow. Very easy to slip on them when getting out of the truck even if you're paying attention. At less than $150 I figured I'd give them a shot.

Freshly installed and LineX'd Rough Country HD2s.

 

Steps/running boards and functional sliders are two different beasts.

If you're just going to step on it then anything will work. If you plan to off-road and wheel it, want to keep your rockers intact and all else in the vicinity, frame mounted > body mounted, and bolt on vs drilling or not sure if there are even any weld-on options, stay away from anything stamped steel like the factory steps, not only useless offroad but a good impact and it'll be game over for them and the pretty paint behind them.
