Just joined as it appears tundras.com is now where it's at...

Currently driving a 2021 tundra after retiring a 2008. I loved that 2008 and would have been happier with that same truck brand new. So now I'm doing what I can to get rid of all the tech, nannies, and options that's possible.

I spent a half hour fixing the settings and turning off everything that I could.

I value my privacy and want to disconnect from toyota completely. I don't have any subscriptions, but I believe there's some sort of connection:
    upload_2023-1-20_17-20-16.jpg
I called toyota and am still trying to understand what's on and what's not. It sounded like the guy I spoke with had never heard of someone asking for this before, but he said I could send in proof of ownership and they'd do something ... I'm not holding my breath.

So is there a way to essentially unplug the wifi connection? I never want to start the truck and get a message asking if I want to update my entune app again.

    Just to head it off...
    I don't use Sirius
    the maps app
    wifi
the Toyota OnStar (can't remember the name)
    etc.

Well, as far as mods go, my first was to put on better tires, my second was to get rid of the Toyota head unit, and put in a kenwood

If you pull the big red wire off the truck battery it should kill the power to your head unit and they can't see you driving.

First few mods were taking off the side steps, cleaning up some badges, leveling kit, bedliner, better tires, ...

Ok, so we can assume that toyota doesn't want to make it too easy so that a thief can't just pull a wire and then the engine dis-abler won't work. But there's got to be a workaround. Where are all the wifi/GPS/hot spot components located?

There's a box under the front passenger seat that looks a bit like a modem. (I'm not a IT professional though.)

Take a saw to the shark fin on top of your truck. Believe that is where all the gps antennas are

The shark fin on top of the roof is where all the GPS, etc. antennas are located. There are a few videos floating around the internet where folks have removed them to eliminate 'connectivity'... You may want to search 'tundra or toyota shark fin'; most vehicles (not just Toyotas) have one of these now... However, before you go ripping it off the roof... there are so many computers controlling the vehicle's functions and its systems, that I'd be concerned your truck would start tossing CEL codes and give you functionality issues.

Also, don't forget these trucks now have a 'black box' of sorts (Event Data Recorder) which is capturing images, conditions, driving habits, etc. and is designed to be used by engineers to analyze and fix issues surrounding events related to the vehicle. This same system can also be accessed by a Toyota dealer or other entity (investigation teams) in the event of an investigation and upon request/subpoena (accident, vehicular homicide, etc.) by various authorities...

All that being said, as already stated, unless you are already completely 'off the grid' and don't have/drive with a modern cell phone, etc... it's all a moot point.

I hope you enjoy your new rig and find some balance between your privacy and keeping the main truck systems functioning

Sometimes I send my phone on it's own vacation to keep the satellites guessing where I'm at.

I'm guessing the truck's computer looks for a signal from various locations like the black box, etc. before allowing the vehicle to even start, let alone triggering a CEL. But now you're telling me I need to figure out how to bypass the black box as well as everything else.

I used to think I was a semi-normal truck owner not wanting all these add-ons, electronics, safety features, and nannies. But as I read forums and reviews I've come to realize that most people these days want all this. I was close to buying a 2022, but that takes it even further.

    Get a 1st gen.
Or wrap your shark fin antenna in aluminum foil glued on with some Permatex Ultra Black.

The 'black box' is pulling data (mostly digital but some imagery) from the vehicle's other computers to register speed, pitch, braking (yes or no), and numerous other driving "behaviors"...

Unfortunately, as folks want more seamlessness between their phones, their vehicles, their habits, and the rest of their lives they have 'invited' a pathway for the types of things that concern you to be present w/o question and almost on a compulsive level. So, yeah, short of getting a Gen 1 or early Gen 2 Tundra you're probably spinning your wheels (no pun intended) on avoiding most of these things that concern you w/o risk to the rest of the systems...

My truck is a 2016. I will never buy a newer one than this. My next truck actually might be an early 90's model.
