Maybe you can negotiate for $750 monthly plus a mileage rate after a predetermined threshold is crossed annually. Some folks like a big lump sum.

I thought your Corolla was 199.00 per month due to your finance buddy at the dealership? I remember since it was just under 200.00 per month and I thought that was a smoking deal. Betsy had some really low miles and well kept due to that.

I should have just purchased your truck as a toy.

Using next months allotment for a new rear bumper?

Shit happens and you take body damage like a man. I can’t stand going with someone off-road and “MY TRUCK HAS DIRT ON IT!!!! AAAAAHHHHHHH”

Why are Tundra drivers worried about putting miles on their truck? These things last forever and retain their value extremely well.

I’d just rather be paid to drive my own vehicle. Especially if the company is going to monitor my every move in a company vehicle.

I'd rather wear and tear someone else's vehicle on their dime then wreck my stuff on their dime. It's an easy choice. The lower milage and retained value is just a bonus. Only way I'm taking the allowance for a personal vehicle, is if i had a beater whip like a Corolla.

Company truck all day. I don't care if it's a Mahindra POS. Keep every mile on your tundras odometer for yourself. And if you ever sell it, less mileage the better.

It depends on the amount and other benefits.

I had a company vehicle for 15 years (4 Ford Explorers). They paid everything, but I had limited personal use; basically allowed to stop at the grocery store on the way home etc. but not much more than that. I had a personal 2002 Tacoma that was just sitting in the driveway for weekend use. After 16 years I only had 125k miles on it. If I didn't have the company vehicle I would have had to replace the Tacoma several times.

At my current employer I get a good ($800) allowance (after tax) and they also pay for gas and maintenance. I use it for work going to construction sites, but since it is my vehicle I use it for all personal trips, and company pay for gas locally. Going out of town further than a tank, I pay for my own gas. This way the company paid for my 2018 Tundra minus the $10k trade-in as down payment. When it was almost paid for I traded it on the 2022 Tundra, got almost $30k for a down payment, which is free money from the company. Yes, I had high miles because of the work trips which lowered my trade in value, but it is still free money.
2022 will be paid off sooner due to higher down payment, then I repeat the process and every time I trade I am a bit further ahead. So allowance makes more sense now. Before that the company Explorer made more sense.

Provided the allowance gets to $700 or more, you might be able to find a good deal on a repossessed 2wd that has a few years and miles on it. If the condition and price is right.... Just remember the lower resale value (2wd) when analyzing the numbers. Really comes down to who you know and who they know. Go fishing!!

    Yeah
Even 5 years ago it was a way different. But when we have peeled on the road 6 million miles a year, that’s a crazy level of liability. We have to be able to prove someone was 10 blocks away (or 10 miles) when someone decides they want to claim one of our service vans cut them off and caused them to wreck into a stop sign at 10pm (no shit - real deal). When you can save $1million on insurance (after the cost of the telematics systems), that’s a significant chunk of change we can put into the annual bonus pool instead. We’ve gotten people off the road before they could possibly kill someone because they were at a bar for three hours pounding beers after their shift.

It isn’t about YOU being a stand up example of company policy… it’s about the two or three people (out of 1400) that don’t get it and just one of them landing us on the wrong side of a several million dollar lawsuit (again - real deal) that causes policies like that to come about.

We’re $500mil/year and that option is there for us. Family owned, fourth generation owner, the employees that care are all family as far as we all are concerned. I would’ve taken a bullet for the previous owner, and would do the same for the current one.

This is pretty much my situation and position.
Monthly stipend (taxed, but you can play some games) and a fuel card (for work miles only) and I’ve been money ahead on my previous truck 3x over, and will be clear and free on the title of my ‘21 in a couple months and putting the stipend in my bank account for maintenance or just additional income for the next 10 years.

Our vehicle reimbursement program is not as generous as the one you are describing. So it will really depend on what kind of offer the OP gets. If I drive 12k miles a year for work, and I only take into consideration my fuel, insurance, oil and tire wear costs, I would net $290 a month to put towards a car payment. Assuming I don’t have to spend any on repairs or other maintenance items. The programs are generally not setup for an expensive poor mileage truck at the employee level. Driving more nets me less, as the variable reimbursement doesn’t even cover the cost of gas for me at truck mpgs.

    Absolutely take the company truck.

One of our guys had a lucrative package for driving his own vehicle. When gas shot over $4 a gallon he asked for a gas card in addition to the $ amount. They gave him a new suv and gas card and took away his cash perk. He says he lost money overall but that isn’t the typical case imo.

I have a dodge truck for work. Keeping my tundy for ever. keeps my tundy out of the salt in winter.
Use the work truck around town and use company fuel on days off.
If I do a road trip with family then I use my tundra, cause I just love it better on long trips, than give her a good wash after a road trip park her and use the work truck again.

Company truck! As many have stated ANYTHING that happens to their truck is on them. Truck allowance will only cover some of the stuff on your truck. Plus you mentioned NE winters. Let the salt eat up their truck not yours.

It’s hard to vote in the poll without knowing the allowance numbers. But Casey’s experience is absolutely what I would do if the numbers make sense. The federal govt is doing almost the same thing for me, just at a much slower pace through mileage, maintenance write offs, and depreciation. Taking the company truck is potentially leaving a LOT of money on the table that could pay for your trucks purchase price multiple times over.

Your truck will depreciate either way. Might as well drive it and make all your money back on it and then sell it for a nice profit.

Which part of the country will your new job take you?
I am also PM but in the global logistic part of business, and I work in offices, so no work truck :(
Reason is, if you worksite tends to be rougher than usual, think of the possible damages and whatnots, and then look at their allowance offer to see if you are willing to take the risk.
I personally hate driving my truck on weekends/vacation with company logo/tag/whatever on it. I am on vacation, damn it....

I know - Poll not quite accurate, but let's assume it's $750. (cannot update poll options to show $750, but let's assume that).

I am back and forth on this. I guess it really depends on how much driving I am doing. Let's also assume that work miles per month is 600 (15 mile round trip taken 18 days/month = 270 miles, then 330 miles for job sites totaling 600 miles/month. That means 7,200 miles/year work related, and I likely would not put more than 10-12k total a year based on that number and my personal driving.

Mileage and wear and tear may not actually be that bad. Again, not using it for much heavy duty truck stuff outside personal use, so expect typical maintenance. I see no reason for excessive wear to be considered when running through this exercise. That being said, maybe the $750 is a number I would go for (after tax).
