I have been reading through a fair number of the transmission temperature threads, but sort of having trouble making sense of what is or isn't concerning...

I have a 5500/6k camper, but haven't towed it yet with the Tundra, so this all sort of started snowballing once I read about the 2019/2020s having the trans cooler removed. I went ahead and got ODB Fusion about a week ago and started monitoring temps with normal driving. I'm in Colorado and have been getting 245 degree trans readings with ambient outside temps at 35-40 degrees, and a mixture of uphill highway driving at 65-75mph and hills and decents at 40-50mph. This seems bad. I have read the tolerances are really up to 280, scary levels 300 - but with the ambient temps and lack of trailer load, 245 degrees is excessive?

If I get into S4, or the gear locks in 4th, 5th or 6th, the temps will drop into the 210s or 220s - but I can't get them to drop below 200.

For additional info if it matters - it's a 2020 TRD Pro, 35s, just completed a 5.29 regear, and it runs with an additional 400ish lbs from stock in the back, with a topper and Decked system.

Any thoughts are welcome - I'm thinking I should maybe just go ahead and have an aftermarket trans cooler put on, or could this be indicative of a different issue I should be looking into?

Tow in S4 like the manual says and you should be fine. That’s for a stock rig though. Your big tires and heavy additions put additional strain on your truck. Trans cooler probably a good idea for your application. That being said, those temps aren’t that bad.

In the picture above, the pan and converter are the same temp. That usually doesn’t happen. Are your app setting correct and reading the right sensor? 245 for a TC would be normal for those tires/weight/hills. Both might be reading the TC PID for some reason.

If not, there is a user on here that sells add on cooler kits with the Toyota parts.

    Edit-same link as above.

Thanks for the info - I got the PID/dashboard from @jtwags - copied his information directly and didn't change any equations - so I think everything is correct. I will delete the files and reload them though just to be sure I didn't corrupt anything.

Edit: Also - if you scroll to the second picture above - pan is 226 converter is 246 - unsure if my screen capture at that time was just a coincidence.

Go drive and see if the pan and TC values change or are exactly the same. My TC will usually be 10-30F higher and only get close to pan temp when coasting.
