So I have a 2023 tundra that is mostly blacked out except for the door/tailgate handles and some window trim. Normally I use “SuperClean” degreaser to strip chrome off plastic parts, but for some reason it’s not working on these(I also tried oven cleaner). I’m thinking Toyota coated these parts in some sort of enamel or lacquer or something. Does anyone have experience or advice on how to get the chrome off these parts without damaging the abs plastic underneath?

From experience with the grille and emblems on the exterior, they are not plastic. They are a chrome plating and the underneath is a brass type material. The chrome will not strip from those. Your best bet is to purchase color matched handles if they are available or swap with someone that has color matched but wants chrome.

The base material is definitely abs, it says so on the back of the part, also I can see the black plastic I the screw holes. Perhaps there is some other plated layer between the plastic and chrome, that is preventing the degreaser from stripping it, that would make sense.

I'm trying to remember, and I'll have to look at an emblem that I have in the garage, but I believe the back side of it is ABS and still has the brass type layer under the chrome. Sand paper his how I got down to the brass or copper material.
