There's a bar in Mammoth (in the Village) that does a small menu each night (only 2 or 3 choices); the food is pretty good, and one of my favorite appetizers/snacks they have is homemade tater tots

I don't have the aptitude for building a PC. Do you enjoy it?

 

I know way too many guys way smarter than me that love doing it, and I could just give them my budget and they'd be amped for the project. With that resource, I don't see myself taking the risk of being a butterfingers and dropping something, spilling something on it, or otherwise caveman-ing expensive electronics.

That said, if I were going to tackle it, I would use the resources you point out and those guys as guides.

 

That sounds like a winning plan.

Can I suggest an approach if you are pining for a new system?

 

Shut down Tundras then, hillbilly!

 

Suggestions are worth what you pay for them!

1. Pick a comfortable budget that you could spend tomorrow.
2. Compile a complete list of components you want for the new build while sticking with the comfort budget.
3. List each of the components and prices as they currently stand while keeping within the overall budget.
4. Set this list aside.
5. Compile the same complete list at a 30% budget increase per component while ensuring all components between the two separate lists would be compatible. This is your excess budget list.
6. Keep both the comfort and the excess budget lists, and on the last day of each month or on significant sales dates check the prices on the components on each.
7. If any of the excess budget items have dropped the 30% difference, order them.
8. If nothing from the excess budget has decreased in price enough to be purchased, and you are having a crisis of needing to spend money; purchase the item from the comfort budget instead.

This will let you gradually accumulate while also building the ability to resist purchases without it being a complete starvation of the joy of buying stuff. The reward for this patience is possibly buying something you can't afford today, but not feeling like your on a financial diet.
