The ceiling?

 

My friends keep telling me I need to upgrade. newer car, newer house, newer audio system, newest social media app....
Then I keep seeing shit like @shifty` plumbing & @FirstGenVol flammable lint filled ceiling.
Friends brand new cars being bought back under lemon laws....

The old stuff still makes more sense in my book. 1st Gen Tundra, 1st Gen Taco. 1912 house.
Although the multi-disc OEM Tundra head unit from @FirstGenVol was a nice upgrade.

 

I'm gonna say Hutch on Q#1, and for Q#2, definitely college kids with rich dads that put $5,000 stereos in their car.

How the hell did the inspector not find that before purchase? Or did you skip inspection?

Pretty common in the SE USA, that and popcorn. More of a 80s/90s building thing though.

I think all they do to make this happen is thin out the mud, smash a giant sponge into it and smash the sponge into the ceiling. I guess that's faster/easier than taping and mudding your joints...

Stupid part is, you can get a hopper and shoot the ceiling with mud for a better texture if you want to save time/money. Hell, you can use a damn paint roller just the same. Sucks for the owner if they need to open the ceiling later, though. Trying to match the texture is a gdsob.

 

Yeah, I've never come across texture like that here; popcorn, plenty of that though. This texture looks horrible to me, like you said, it looks like a pain to match.

was common. Added a little flair to a flat boring ceiling.
You could get a similar pattern on your Linoleum counters.


Popcorn for your counters to match the ceiling.

 

Another product I'm not a fan of. Once a corner peeled or you tore it, it's never the same. Almost like a window screen...

 

Asbestos would make me shy away from anything pre-1940 due to the much greater likelihood it exists and will be expensive to remove (unless the house is in pristine shape with no need to remodel).

 

Last refresh 1950 which was fresh paint & a sheet of linoleum over newspaper. Probably asbestos, but it's in fine shape so no reason to touch it.
kitchen got updated wallpaper in 1974 & new porcelain in the bathroom. Lack of updates means lack of stuff to kill me.
Well, I'm sure the paint is full of lead, but after a season stripping paint maskless I got tested & no elevated lead levels in my blood.

Of course, now the gas stove is going to kill me apparently. if not, they'll come up with something else to kill me like cellphone rays. ;-\

Well you don’t have to worry about the cellphone electromagnetic transmissions, the lead in the window glass will help to shield that.

My brother lives in an 1895 home built by carpenters who look like the never used a level in their life. 3 layers of kitchen floor with asbestos at the bottom. Horsehair asbestos lined plaster. Woodwork with 4 layers of paint with a lead layer in there some where. House sinking and no way to jack it up since the horsehair asbestos plaster will crack. The list goes on.

 

You've still gotta tape and mud joints, as goes before any type of texture. I do think you're right about the giant sponge tho.

Well it had a vent on the outside and a flex tube that dumped into the floor so it appeared as though it was legit. It was not. The inspector missed it. Shit happens. I'm going to fix it and move on. I'm just glad I didn't find any mold.

 

Garage re-org and cleanup mostly done. Me == tired. Tomorrow is go nuts with at least one truck w focus on bumpers. I have a nice space to work now, access from both sides, fairly stoked on that part. On Monday a s-ton of boxes of cabinets invade and put me back in the garage shutdown phase.

 

Originally done with a mop head, this is a “stipple” or the previously mentioned stomp brush texture technique. They do make a roller that mimics the same look. Somewhat common around here. Not terribly attractive, hard to match and only slightly better in appearance than popcorn. Probably not as acoustically effective though.

 

My wife doesn't like it but I think it looks significantly better than popcorn. Our house was built in 91 so this was the trend back then. I'm considering making that an access door instead of replacing with sheetrock. If I can find one that doesn't look ugly.

 

Could also make your own out of drywall or plywood and trim to cover the seam. That's fairly common around these parts.

I’d put a trap door there with a sign saying "do not open" and then when you do, some creepy m3gan doll staring back at you as a surprise.

 

frame the hole, attached the cut out panel to a piece of plywood, hinge it, trim it, matchy-matchy, done.

 

To simplify, in the future, cut on the center of the framing. Then when you go to repair it, you have two sides with edges to screw to. You can't really do a trimmed access like @Isaami mentioned, which is the standard and correct way to do it, because you've got that joist in the center of your opening that won't allow the panel to be pushed up into the ceiling. Besides that, you'd have nothing to nail the trim to. Regardless of what you do, you'll need to add backing or cut back to the next joist on both sides. Trick for removing drywall without destroying it so you can reuse the piece- use a strong magnet to locate the screws, dig down to the screwheads with a knife and remove with a screwgun. Locating all the screws will also tell you where the studs/joists are so you can cut on them.
It looks like you cut it out pretty clean, if you saved the piece, just add sone backing to screw to, and put it back

I know. I hate that we ended up cutting the way we did with that joist in the middle.

This is genius. I wish I had thought of this.

I'm looking up different products online. This HVAC grill is about the perfect size. It would look like we have a return in the basement. I could just remove it if I need to access that hole. Wife doesn't love the idea but I don't think it would look horrible.

 

Just seal off the back of it so you don’t have air movement between the living space and open insulation.

 

look at this shot on Moab Motorsports website. That BFF bumper looks like it was NOT up to the task of lifting the front of the truck.

 

Keep in mind you're still going to need to add some backing, the end with the hinges and opposite with latches will need to be screwed into something solid. Would be best to add backing to the whole perimeter. Don't even think about hanging that cover with drywall anchors. If you don't know what I mean by backing; any piece of wood that will accept screws well- without splitting. The 1x4's that are used to make wooden pallets or similar is ideal. Cut into pieces to go around the opening but on top of the drywall, so you wont see them from the room. run screws thru the drywall into the pieces. If you were patching with drywall, you offset them 1/2 behind the drywall, and 1/2 into the opening, to receive the replacement piece of drywall. Not sure if I'm explaining it clearly. And definitely seal it off as well, like @CodyP mentioned

 

That's a strange way to lift it.

 

My guess is they went off the tow points off the bumper until it started to bend, then went to the control arms.
