I’m trying to decide on a bed cover. I previously had a tri fold which was fine, but I was thinking about a roll up. For anyone with a retrax, what do you do if you have to haul a large item? Can you quickly remove the hole roll up canister part?

4 knobs keep the cover on. You could pull it off in a few minutes. Honestly though it would ales very little room up when rolled up.

the oem cover is a bakflip mx4 rebranded. For bed rack go a few pages back and you’ll see someone modded theirs to fit on top

I do. Solid cover. Essentially the same thing but ’half the price’ of the OEM or MX4. Actually just a rebranded version.

But it doesn't have the option for the front panel to flip up against the cab to open up the whole bed. Hence the price difference. But easy enough to remove if you do need the whole bed open.

Just finished installing the Bakflip MX4. Had to wait for replacement rails because one was bent in shipping. Seems to fit great. Have to clean out the spray in bed liner from the drain holes so the drain tubes fit, then will take it through the touch less car wash to test for any water in the bed. Doesn’t seem like there will be but we will see

I’m still trying to decide on a cover. I’m basically down to Retrax pro XR and Rollnlock A series XT. Any input would be great. It seems there’s a lot of good online reviews for retrax. I’ll spend a little extra for a product that is truly better.

I had a WeatherTech roll up cover on my 2020 Tundra Pro with zero water getting inside.

I am getting another one for my 2023 Tundra Pro, hoping for the same results.

I have no experience with RollnLock, but I've owned four different trucks with Retrax Powertrax covers and loved them all...never had any issues, and have a PowerTraxOne MX on my TRD Pro...highly recommend them

Is there a way to manually open the electric cover? Sounds silly but sometimes I forget the fob, or just don't want to wait, or just don't want to carry an extra device in my pocket.

There isn't, it actually locks in place wherever you stop it...it comes with 2 remotes, I mount one in the bed (I'll post a pic how I have it when I go out to garage, I also show it at end of video)...the other I have mounted by steering wheel...this way I can open/close from drivers seat or if I'm at tailgate...I'm the same way, I don't wanna carry another fob so it works out perfectly

I can’t seem to find a good picture or explanation of how the retrax lock works when fully closed. Is it a decently strong piece of metal and would it be sufficiently strong to make it difficult to break into?

Hmm. I did not have this issue with my MX4. Haven't gone through the carwash yet but will do so this evening to see how water resistant it is.

For the purpose of selecting the correct fitment for tonneau covers, do all Tundras now come standard with a deck rail system?

I think SR is the only trim that doesn’t come with the deck rail system standard.

Do base SR5s have the deck rails? I have a limited and it was standard.

The Toyota trim compare page shows it standard on SR5 in general, without adding a package.

Curious as well. Also saw some early complaints about excessive water when first released, but I’m wondering if those have been sorted out.

I went with the Truxedo Centry hard roll up cover, heard there has been issues with X4S and one in particular was frost wouldn't allow it to roll up. Had the Centry on 2020 Tacoma for 2 years even in the winter and no issues here in Montana. Just before Christmas drove in -12 degrees for 150 miles, at destination cover function without issues, loaded suit cases in the back, drove another 150 miles home in -12 or lower degrees as it was starting to get dark, upon arrival home, function without issue. I like the canvas look to the cover over the X4S vinyl (cheap look) anyways.

No, there is a latching system the runs down the side in a couple spots, but really if someone wanted to get in to any tonneau cover, they can, just us a crowbar. Yes, even a Diamond Back is not theft proof. Some are harder than other and the truck may get damaged, but it is possible on every cover.
