I love me a good gyro. We have a few places around us that know what they're doing.

 

What makes it a gyro?

 

Every one I have had is just a pita with “Greek” ingredients. I’m no expert though.

 

Usually it's roasted lamb or beef or a combo that is on a vertical roaster and sliced to order, in a pita with greens, onions, tomatoes, pickles, and, most importantly, tzatziki sauce.

 

Get the pickles off that brisket! What a travesty!

 

Pickle are to be enjoyed alone. Anything they are "with" is ruined and only tastes of pickle.

 

Burgers?
Diced in potato salad?
Diced in a tuna sandwich?

 

No.

 

Celery is fine in a tuna sandwich. It has minimal flavor and adds crunch. Pickles are delicious, but they are so overpowering that anything else just tastes like pickle. They also get absorbed into any bread item, so they are never to be allowed touch. I order food and tell them I am allergic to pickles so there is no cross contamination when I say "no pickles." Don't want somebody to forget and think that just pulling them off my burger is good enough. It is not.

Also, no pickle chips or spears. They don't taste right. Whole pickles only.

 

Ok, to put the pickle thing in perspective, did any of you ever make what the kids called a "suicide" when you were at a soda fountain machine? (Those that say no to this had sad childhoods devoid of hope and joy. A suicide was a mix of several sodas from the fountain machine.) Do you remember the one soda that you never used in a suicide? Root Beer! Why? Is Root Beer gross? No! It's delicious. It's also a more powerful flavor than the other options and if added to the suicide, you got watered down Root Beer instead of a cacophony of flavors.

Pickles are like Root Beer. Great, but only when enjoyed separately.

Pickle flavor is overpowering but are great on burgers. I agree on the whole ones. Best flavor. My MIL makes homemade ones with spicy peppers in the brine that are fantastic!

It is not for use on retainers. I had one for a good chunk of high school. One time around thanksgiving I left it out on the table and one of my aunts put pickle juice on it. Unknowingly I put it back in my mouth and had a good squinty face afterwards I am sure.

 

See! You have to be drunk to think mixing pickle flavor with anything is a good idea.

 

I’d try it just to say I did.
