Transmission Fluid Change at 190k?

I bought my truck with 160k miles on it and am now closing in on 190k. It came with a very detailed Carfax, but no record of a transmission fluid change. Would it be a good idea to change it now, or should I just leave it be?

I guess I should also ask the same for my differentials as well.

I changed mine for the first time at 180K and it did fine.

 

If yours works the same as my '16, I would suggest you drain, drop the pan, replace the gasket and the metal internal basket filter thing, and refill. Or, just drain and refill. Make sure the drained stuff you remove is the same temp as what's going back in when you measure the two, so you get equal amounts.

No flushes, only draining and refilling!

 

I did a full fluid exchange at 60K miles including dropping the pan and replacing the strainer.

 

Gotcha, I'm seeing a lot of people say just do the drain and refill, so I'll be doing that. I've also seen what can happen with trying to drop the pan, and since I'm not very good at broken bolt extraction, I'll leave it be. It's not leaking thankfully, so the gasket should still be good.

Do at least 3 spill and fills on your transmission, with a few days/weeks in between. Each will drain about 3-1/2 to 4 quarts. I use and swear by Valvoline MaxLife full synthetic ATF---it has no issues being blended with the original Toyota WS fluid.

If gradually introducing new fluid ever "kills" a transmission, it was on the way out anyway!

Regardless of how many miles are on a transmission, the fluid breaks down and loses it's properties over time. So it definitely needs to be changed.

Differentials and transfer cases too....

Have a work colleague with a Tacoma at 529,000 miles and has never done the tranny fluid.

 

Having fresh clean fluid is always better than old and possibly dirty fluid no matter if it is engine, trans, or differental fluid.

 

Understandable. I'll be doing what another member suggested, which was doing a "spill and fill" where I drain the old ATF and put in new stuff, then repeat about 3 times or so.

 

I bought my 07 Crewmax with 213k on it. First thing I did was have all the fluids changed out with the exception of a drain/fill on the tranny. I wanted to make sure I had a starting point for my maintenance log and knew what was done. Two things left now to do: change power steering fluid and brake fluid. I'm due for an oil change in about 1 month so I'll have the PS fluid done, and then at next oil change brake fluid. Then I'm sure it's all good to go...
