Just a small update..I don’t drive the Tesla a whole lot since I’ve owned it. Maybe 12 miles a day, x5 days = 60 miles a week. Of course, I’ve had a lot of city drives for one reason or another.
I purchased brand new in June, and just hit 3k miles. In the 3k / seven months I’ve owned it, I’ve only spent $106 in electricity charging it

That's 7.5 cents per mile, so if I did my math right you'd be at 43.33333 MPG.

not bad...when you consider >80% was city driving.

I wonder if a Porsche 911 Turbo S gets 43mpg in the city?

City is where EV shines. It's the highway they lose out on. ICE are the opposite. It's part of what makes a hybrid a more logical next step vs the forced EV crap that is coming.

You sure hope, but with the competition stepping up quickly, the lower pricing may stick for a long time.

A lot of new competition. Rivian (R1S vs Model X/Y). Lucid (Air vs Model S). Polestar (Polestar 2 vs Model 3). Porsche (Taycan vs Model S). Chevy (Bolt vs Model 3). Nissan (leaf vs model 3). Hyundai (Ionic 5 vs Model Y). Jaguar (I-Pace vs Model Y). Kia (EV6 vs Model Y). Mercedes (EQS vs Model 3/S). Volkswagen (iD4 vs Model Y/3). Volvo (XC40 vs Model Y). Ford (Mach-E vs Model Y/3).

The space is getting crowded quickly.

I'd even argue that the Lighting/R1T is competition for the Model S or X. 99% of those trucks will be used for city/suburban situations for families that have to haul around a lot of gear (sports bags, trips to the garden store, car seats, etc.). If someone was looking electric, they could very easily shift their focus over to a Lightning/R1T for the added versatility.

What were the options before all of these listed above? Tesla, Tesla or Tesla. You better believe that Porsche Taycan sales took away from Model S sales. The guy who has the money for a Model S most likely has the money for a Taycan and crossed shopped those products. The person who wants a Model Y will absolutely be looking at iD4, EV6, Ionic 5, maybe even R1S. The market has options now, Tesla isn't the only slice of pie.

    Edit:
    1) Also, while pricing may not be identical in comparison for every model and trim, people are going to cross shop the options.

    2) Added the Mach E vs Model Y in my list of comparisons.

Call me fanboy, but none of the other providers have their own network yet, pricing for a quick EV, lack of software roll-out procedures, nor replacement parts ready to go...not sure Rivian has service centers everywhere. Tesla has been in game much longer than others.

Electrify America has such an inconsistent and broken charging network. Instant regret for a lot of non-Tesla EVs road tripping

Those saying Tesla has no competition, your correct on paper and approaching this rationally or from a car enthusiast stance. What you're missing is that there's a portion of EV buyers who think they're saving the planet, and they hate Elon's actions regarding social media. Just the existence of another option, inferior or not, is enough to draw the ideologues. Prime example is a very vocal celebrity who got rid of her Tesla for a VW EV and proudly announced it on social media. The hypocrisy/stupidity don't matter so long as it's in service to the message.

Tesla has a great charging network - that is a fact, it is miles ahead of anyone that I listed previously. I will argue that many of the EV buyers aren't buying the vehicle for their road tripper. Its their daily back and forth to work, the gym, the grocery store, ec. It's the 2nd or 3rd car in addition to their ICE vehicles. For a lot of people, not all, the majority of charging is done at home, so for many, the charging issue is a moot point (myself included - I have plugged into a public charging station once in 14,500 miles of EV ownership). It is true, Electrify America (charging for all the non-Tesla's) is flawed, it's pretty bad in a lot of cases, but that is catching up as well. Especially when you get the heavyweight automakers stepping in. Not to say that public charging isn't considered when buying the car, it holds a lot of weight for sure - I sure considered it when purchasing.

A lot of the EV's I listed previously are very quick, just as quick as many of the Teslas (not the Plaid, obviously). The Kia EV6 has 500hp and 500ft lbs. +....a KIA!

I know Rivian and Ford rolls out OTA updates just like Tesla.

Tesla has been notoriously bad in the replacement parts game. Laughably so considering how long they have been around. Not sharing paint codes with body shops. Months on month delays for simple parts. Tesla wrote the script for this issue. Rivian sends a tech to your house and fixes your vehicle in your driveway (at least that's what they did for their most recent recall).

There are issues with any new/growing company, those pains will end as more cars are sold. These companies are figuring it all out and Tesla is responding. Like you said, Tesla has been in the game for a long time and look at they issues they still have. The competition will be caught up in no time.

To be very clear - I have a Model 3 Performance. It's a great car with many things to love and generally, I like the brand. Probably the best all around car I've owned and I have owned many (probably too many). BUT, Don't think for a second that the car and the company behind it don't have their own flaws. You could write a book on their issues. Personally, I am very excited to see all of this competition because frankly, Tesla was able to get away with too much being the EV monopoly it was for 10 years.

    You are certainly correct.

I certainly did not purchase it for anything to do with the Earth. :boink::fistbump:

Yep. Mine is used mainly to take to the gym and back, and misc trip for whatever reason (even just to take it out for a change)

Ref the Kia...sounds nice, but its also a KIA. Your performance has 522hp (marginally diff over the Kia) but still Kia to Tesla...I would not depend on the Kia as they have not been around long enough in the game .

I am not sure how quickly Rivian or Ford roll out the updates. I do believe Tesla is ahead of them from the tech side though. The EV Lightning does look fun and I want to drive it, (although they are not at the point where I would trust it to tow very long (based on video reviews) or where I would use it as a true truck.

I didn't buy mine to save the planet either. I bought mine because it accelerates like you're sitting on the front car of a fast roller coaster - fast and smooth:burnrubber: I think we've already touched on the environmental impact of EV's vs ICE earlier in this thread. EV's have a huge hurdle to jump over with rare earth mining and sustainability. Whole different can of worms...

My wife and I just bought a Kia Telluride last year. I have to admit, it is a slick ride. The build quality is impressive. Way nicer/better than the Mercedes GLC 300 it replaced. But to your point, a new vehicle platform will bring it's quirks and issues.

I just saw yesterday that Johnny Lieberman (Motortrend journalist who owns a R1T) posted that Rivian allows you to send addresses directly from your phone to your Rivian - a quick OTA update. I'm sure Tesla has the edge.

The towing thing with the Lighting is a big reason why I think they'll be used as people movers, not trailer/cargo movers. Hell, that's what most ICE pickups are used for. I pass at least 5-10 TRX's and 15-25 Raptors a week during my suburban commute - all going back and forth to work/gym/stores. Certainly not what my truck is used for...
