I think I’ve lost my mind - thinking of relocating to Cleveland, Ohio

Seriously - I think I’ve lost my damned mind…and what’s more scary is the spouse is in agreement (with the moving part - the fact she agrees I’ve lost my mind has been well established).

So originally from Ohio and did a decade in both Cleveland and Columbus. Fled Columbus for the peacefulness and rural charm of Central NC a few years ago. While I like the area down here - there are downsides.

Biggest thing is just being away from friends/family. Honestly, I don’t have too many of either left - friends are more people I was close with a decade or so ago and have remained in touch with - family more distant relatives, 2nd cousins and older relatives/friends of my parents back “home”. Wife has some immediate family left there and a few close friends still - but by and large it’s us and the dogs. Still - it would be nice to be closer to those few people that are important to us and not a 6-7 hour drive away.

Then there’s the job situation. Wife’s job is US government- so not too hard to transfer anywhere. Me - for some reason employers are absolutely struggling to find quality hires in Ohio in my position right now. Down here - unless I feel like driving to Charlotte/Raleigh - the act like they could care less - and even in the “cities” its ok - but nothing like it is in Ohio.

I seriously have had no less than 3 dozen calls from recruiters in both Columbus and Cleveland in 48 hours to nice I started putting feelers out yesterday. I think I’ve had 3 calls total in NC and one solid set of interviews in a month down here. Interviews went well - but it’s been 10 days since 2nd interview and no call - so I’m guessing there won’t be one. Otherwise it’s a pretty stagnant job market here - vs one that’s super hot in Ohio.

Still not sure I’m ready to return to seeing snow and grey/gloom from November until March every year. Also not super excited about the prospect of a return to Columbus over Cleveland - but at a point it’s hard to say no to someone willing to pay you handsomely to relocate: I mean I don’t think I’ll ever stop working as long as I can function - but would be nice to just reach that point financially to say “screw it - I’m set and I’m just gonna do my own thing and be my own boss” - which at 48 I can see happening within a decade. Guess it’s a mid-life crisis 2.0 for me.

Sounds to me like you and your wife would be happier going back home. Just my amateur psychoanalysis which is worth squat. Good luck.

No amount of money could tempt. Life is more than that.

    Good luck with your decision.

DO NOT do it. I did this a long time ago. Ran back to my home because I missed friends etc.. Problem was is everyone had their own lives and were busy so the time spent was minimal.
Plus this was MN so the same Thing. Gloomy long cold winters. I realized after two years I made a big mistake and bailed out.
I will always love my home state of MN and I will probably buy a cabin on a lake when I retire but I’ll be out come NOV-MAR. Go somewhere else if you need a change of scenery.

I don’t know - as to expecting things/people not to have changed - no, I fully understand that. That’s the exact reason why I don’t go back to the small town where I grew up. The past is just that - past. I don’t feel any need to go chasing after some ghost of times gone by.

The friends we have there are current - regular visitors down here and who we see on each trip back.

I think we would be happier - but man this moving is rough. I’m think we have moved 4 times in a little more than a decade 3 within same city and 1 out of state. First couple were no brainers - we rented and could buy - we owned a condo and could buy a nice home…the out of state was for job and again an upgrade in home. Not that a house is everything to us - but clearly it’s nice to have a home you enjoy with all the amenities you enjoy.

Its just the hassle of a move, the potential job hunt (just changed employers and part of the conversation was exactly this - they had opening in Ohio they were considering me for so we agreed to revisit this spring - i asked my boss about it yesterday and crickets… now that I am there I worry they said what I wanted to hear to get me to sign on and will change things up on me - which would mean a whole new job search.) and the logistics of another move.

Still it’s just hard when your basically alone somewhere. IDK - guess we see how my job responds first.

I've lived my entire life in Ohio. Columbus is a great city, has a lot of perks, traffic isn't terrible. I've never lived near Cleveland, but spent plenty of time there.

I'm in my mid-30s. If I could move out west I would tomorrow. I'd love to relocate to CO, AZ, Utah, Wyoming, one of the Dakotas, etc.

Wife and I have aging grandparents/parents so right now it's not an option for us.

    Zero help, sorry.

For me, beyond family, there's not many reasons that I would have to stay.

The mere fact that you will never again have to get your car or truck inspected. and cheap gas (compared to Pa) is enough of an incentive to make the move back IMO.:D

There’s a ton of people to meet where you’re at now and you two can make plenty of friends. Personally and no offense,It sounds like Ohio is no dream location.

Yea - FB memories just popped up a couple days ago - last big snow storm I was there through in 2010. Went to work at 8 - drove from Medina up to East side of Cleveland and was ok - by noon there was like 2 damn feet of snow. Took me something like 5 hours to get home that night.

Remote work though - will never make the mistake of an office job again.

You must not be in the South or familiar with Southeners.

People down here are outright weird to me. Friendly to your face - but will talk shit behind your back like no other. Naturally mistrustful of anyone who didn’t grow up down here and do not dare not share a viewpoint n politics or religion amongst other things. It’s very weird - at times it feels like stepping back to 1950 - and not in the good/wholesome “Andy Griffith” way.

If you get sick of the snow and grey, sunny and warm is just 6-7 hours away. Better than the 14-18 hours for me.

Do you have children? Rather than move back to a place with family & friends that likely won't be around as long as you, maybe hold off until the kids settle in somewhere and go be a part of their lives (and your grandkids eventually). If no kids, and a sore subject, I truly apologize.

We moved away from a southern/mid-atlantic coastal resort town, to 30 mi south of Canada. People still think we're crazy, but we love the snow and the summers are great. And it's secretly beautiful up here in the spring-fall (also winter if you like the white stuff). But dont tell anyone. Regardless, we didnt move to Syracuse, which is like a smaller Cleveland. And wouldn't. I'd gather there are plenty of great spots in OH that get the 4 seasons, (summer, fall, snow, mud) that aren't Cleveland.

    Oh the lovely circle lol

OP, I'm in Akron. My wife is closer with her family than I am with mine. If she would ever give the all clear, we'd be loading up the moving truck to go out west (AZ/UT) or carolinas. I'm also in my mid 30's and I'm not sure now that we're starting a family, if it'll ever actually happen.

Columbus is nice, just expanding like crazy now and new developments everywhere. Cost of living is going up too. Cleveland has nice suburbs.

My dad moved to Virginia for a couple years before settling back in Ohio to Coshocton. He swears that the cloudiness and gloomy weather is only north of I70. Stay south (Ohio)

Good luck with whichever decision you guys make!

I’m in Medina and the winters aren’t as bad with lots of cold & snow, it comes and then goes away. It doesn’t stay cold and snowy for many months like it used to decades ago. No more huge piles of snow all season. So far this winter we only had one good cold & snow storm and then 3 days later it was back in the 40s+.

    Depends on your situation really.

For me I was born in the Cleveland suburbs until moving to Georgia when my father was relocated down to a suburb of Atlanta in 1985. Lived in the Atlanta burbs for 14 years and relocated back to Ohio in 1999.
Reason I came back was the family construction business and the fact that my father’s company relocated him back to the Cleveland area in 1997.
Right now the reason head hunters are recruiting is because of the growth here in the Cleveland and Columbus areas. Intel, Sherwin Williams just to name a couple.
If you love sunny and 75 degrees that’s Southern California. I’m in the Medina burb of Cleveland which puts me near Akron, an hour and forty min. drive from Columbus. Thirty min. Drive from Akron Canton Airport and Forty min. Drive from Cleveland’s Hopkins Airport.
Recently the snows haven’t been anywhere like Buffalo’s and as you know the east side of Cleveland always gets more snow. Stay on the Westside burbs or move to Columbus and you won’t get the lake effect weather. Back here 22 years now and sure it snows but not as bad as you think. The last few days here have been in the upper 40’s and low 50’s in Mid January! I also came back to be with my parents which unfortunately my father passed away unexpectedly and to be here for my mother.

Don’t let the weather sway your decision.
From my home in Medina it’s 11 hour drive to Myrtle Beach. 13 hours back to Atlanta. Even quicker by plane.
If the money is right you can afford to vacation where you want.
Bottom line the Cleveland burbs are a much better place to live.
    The choice is yours.

Relatively speaking too, Cleveland burbs are probably a lot cheaper to live in too. Columbus has been climbing but NE Ohio is still pretty cheap.

Will be back in Ohio next week - meeting and discussing the logistics of a move and what it would pay.

Big think TBD is location - hopefully I can do anywhere in Cleveland/Akron - opens up housing options a lot and we can pick what fits our needs and is most budget friendly.

Akron is even cheaper than Cleveland - less snow and still gives us easy access if we want to all Cleveland has to offer. Also looking out around Twinsburg/Aurora and Hudson - nice area, semi affordable and homes always seem to retain value. Having lived in Streetsboro - it’s nice - but very much a town of new housing developments everywhere with identical houses on top of each other (not my thing) - Aurora has areas like this - but parts of it are older developments too.

Guess we see - was surprised to see some of the asking prices on homes. Granted alot of this is probably inventory that hit at the peak of the market and hasn’t sold for a reason. Just feels overpriced in a way to me - but then again haven’t gotten the price on our current. If you can sell for 35% more than you paid 2 years ago - then it’s only logical that your going to have to pay more when moving too.

Kinda got me considering selling the Tundra. I mean - I could dump a huge payment AND pay off wife’s ride too with my equity and ditch that payment. Don’t need it - it’s just another toy and end of day I can always buy another later if I want once settled. Easier to replace a car than a home. Guess we see what this winds up costing me.

I could have told you that before either of these 2 threads.

But posting rants on Tundras is cheaper than paying some headshrinker. Got to save money somewhere to afford my lifestyle.

Having grown up just a few miles South of 70 in SE Ohio - I can confirm this is untrue. Just as Greg and gloomy immediately South. There’s a damn reason why the number 2 industry just behind fracking is meth down there. It’s like Mississippi without the BBQ and hurricanes.

Yeah the small town meth problem is horrible. There’s just no industry and low income now.

    - proximity to family/friends
    - proximity to my other place (90 miles vs 350 miles - difference of driving down and home on a day off/weekend and driving - spending the night and driving home next day) - the other place is my hobby farm / so would be nice to have more access during my free time to do projects.
    - dislike of current area
    - ability to do a larger property with a proper garage vs house and no garage - home prices are better
    - ability to return to something similar to my former job - but at a higher rate of pay and with a boss who isn’t an idiot. Current job looks good on paper - but reality is it sucks. Virtual work on a team - but it’s not a team - it’s the 15 best individuals they could find but absolutely no one works as a team. More than half just go off and do their own thing and management can’t control them or just isn’t interested in managing.

Those are all valid reasons and for me proximity to family/friends and larger property are reasons alone I would relocate.
