What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I had a friend who wasn’t so lucky in his 92 mustang gt going 130+ on a city street.

 

Had a friend that wasn’t so lucky in his Toyota P’up. Driving drunk and drove 2 miles past the turn to his house. Ran off the road and into a tree line. No seatbelt.

 

NOOO! The 125mph and wrapping it around a tree were completely unrelated. Before I hit the tree (I was goin about 70) first there was a tall curb that I caught a little air off of as it folded both drivers wheels flat under the car, then slid thru dirt/bushes about 60 feet, thru a fence, and then the tree actually saved me from dropping down into a ravine. I had slowed to about 40 by that time. Front license plate hit the tree dead center and it was the front end that wrapped around the tree, and of course the dash came in a bit. It's true what they say; seatbelts do save lives.

I participated in a boating under the influence class for law enforcement once. It was a somewhat controlled test of the officers ability to do a field sobriety test. Drink, breathalizer in a back room then get interviewed by students (officers) in the class. Repeat. Strangest party I ever attended.

 

'88 was the year to have, it was lighter than newer models and didn't have the crazy seatbelt/door attachment..
I drove mine daily (~75 miles round trip) until late 2013

 

So how far over the legal level of being drunk did you show signs of it in the field sobriety test? Have you now memorized how to say the alphabet backwards?

 

If that wasn't an 88 and was about $4k less I'd be all over that. That wagon would be awesome! You don't see those much.

 

88 had that weird rear wheel steering though. I'd still hit it.

 

I've never owned a wrong wheel drive car. Almost bought a neon srt4, but after we fixed it, my buddy decided to keep it. Good thing, too. Probably wouldnt have the buell. And probably would have understeered off a cliff.

 

Heard those things were pretty quick for that era. Swap the wheels and it's the ultimate sleeper car. They had a hood scoop too though right? Wife drove a reggie one in high school. It was a shit box.

 

Yea, hoodscoop & huge ass spoiler. It was quick, and sounded pretty rowdy, but i'm glad i got a motorcycle instead.

 

Especially today with all the distractions in the cabin. It makes you pay attention to DRIVING....plus it's fun, even in a non-performance car. I sold my last manual, a 1998 Tacoma AC 4x4 with the 2.7 3rz back in 2009. Despite having only 150HP/190TQ it felt faster tan the 3.4 5vz with the A340s (190/22o) in several Toyotas I've owned equipped like that. I picked up a 2000 4Runner with the 5vz / 5 speed about 2 years ago and I barely drive it...but when I do, it's easily the most fun car I've driven regularly since my Tacoma. I bought it to teach my daughter how to drive a stick and now she is the only one of her friends who can drive a stick...and she teases her boyfriend mercilessly about it.

 

I bought two MT’s so my boys (5 and 7) can learn. But they are so nice I am not sure I trust them to drive either . Hah.

88-91 was the 2ng gen. The 84-87 was the funky shaped ones.

 

Those were "13 second" cars from the factory. It was a 13.99, but still. Also, they were the only car to come from the factory with no muffler.

 

His name was Shaun and his friend riding shotgun was Brian. The ironic thing about it is that his parents bought him a Suzuki side flip (sidekick) a couple years earlier when he flipped it down the street from me.

So what do they buy for his next car? A mustang GT of course.

Just to give you a visual, the car was only stopped after it hitting the curb and flying through two large trees. The engine block was ejected and on fire a block away according to the newspaper. So basically not pretty for either one. Ended up being closed casket for both.

 

So, getting back on track about the Tundra. Anyone know how the front pillar could leak while it’s snowing/raining out? The drips are from the hand rest so it’s coming from underneath.

 

Jeebus. Yeah, my friend Brian ended up totaling his Mustang and himself down in central FL. To this day, I don't have the full details, I dated his sister for a while, and we hadn't been talking much when it happened so a mutual friend ended up telling me. I have a clipping of hit obit, but I wasn't at a place in life (back then) where I could've helped that situation in any way; my presence wouldn't have helped quell anyone's pain, only add to it. One of a couple dozen friends I've lost to stupid shit, still kick myself for not being there.

 

Yes. Check this bulb seal all the way up and around to the top corner of the door. Look for rips. I'm pretty sure PHM posted about this exact same thing in his thread, and I believe it's documented in the 'Definitive leak thread'

 

Yeah, my friend Shaun was a risk taker. We used to quarry diving during the summer when the cops weren’t around. I kind of lost touch after high school only to read about in the news and getting a family call a few years later.

 

I wonder what % of these are still running? 5%?

I haven't seen one on the road in many years.

 

My community college had so many of these that were riced out and beat to shit.

Okay eagle eyes. Maybe I'll get on that.

edit: actually i just looked at my records and when I had the rear drums rebuilt the brake fluid was flushed which was 25k miles ago. Gunk on reservoir?

 

Be amazed how much better the brakes feel after a full system flush with fresh fluid. Moisture accumulates over the years in the brake fluid, especially in the calipers through the piston seals.

 

I wonder if they lied to you. That fluid looks black AF. I haven't seen that reservoir stain like the power steering one but it's possible. See what the fluid looks like once you open the cap.
