I considered myself to be lucky in that I stumbled into a fantastic tile guy. I kept making up project for him. Spent a lot but super happy. I’m legitimately considering asking if he would fly up here and work on this new house.

We have a cabinet guy for that. He's down in south FL, we flew him up when overhauling the kitchen. Dad and I did all the drywall, electric, plumbing, windows, lighting, flew up the cabinet guy, and hired a FL transplant to weave in some matching flooring.

 

PS - @FirstGenVol here's the UI for the smartphone app. If you connect the device to wifi, it regularly uploads and will alert you if anything exceeds their set threshold. I'm hoping they eventually let you set your desired alert threshold, but so far it's not too spammy. This is the default home dashboard. If you tap on any of the items, you can see a linear graph at various intervals: last 48hr, last week, last month, last year (or similar). Very user friendly, good UI/UX.

@FirstGenVol I thought you were retiling the entire shower. A tile floor is so much nicer, but more $$ for sure. If you reuse that pan, do yourself a favor and do something to deaden the hollow sound. Then cover the walls with your choice of stucco paper. Then sheet with hardibacker. Some type of seam tape is always a good idea. Then generously coat with redguard or the likes. The reason you don't want drywall behind the hardibacker, is because it would push the tile out another 1/2", requiring oversized schluter, and it's completely unnecessary. No room for a bench, but niches are nice to have, and those get framed in before the paper covers the walls.

 

It's controversial, but Loctite foam is what I used with ours. It's minimal expanding, but you need to keep solid weight on it while it's rising, and the floor should be leveled.

 

completely unrelated to the tundras. but research i've been doing seems to point at the 2gr-fse block should bolt up to FE heads..

the 95 tacoma is the one i keep considering engine swapping (im talking later down the line.) the 2gr with the tune the mr2 has makes ~300hp and 280 ft lbs of torque. should be an easier fit than a UZ.... am i crazy for wanting to attempt this swap in the next few years?

a dual VVTI 4.0 likely. but i wouldnt want FSE heads.. the dual VVTI 4.0 has the largest intake ports of all the GR engines.

the single VVTI 4.0 is a totally different setup.. nothing really interchanges. the reason to run FE heads instead of FSE heads its because the tunes are far more mature, the FE is making more power than the FSE anyway at this point, and parts like cams exist for it.

 

If you have the resources and known-how to blaze new trails so others can explore, go for it. That is truly the American spirit.

 

The ditra is the waterproof membrane. Use it anywhere you want sealed from water penetration. In commercial installs, we used it on shower floor and walls, and not on the bathroom floor (unless it had a floor drain).

it’ll be fine, especially if you’re using Schluter ditra. That goes right overtop anyways. We used green board and normal drywall with schluter ditra.

usually cement board is used in a conventional shower.

No hooks, I don't know about a trans cooler, and it says 0w20 on the damn oil cap, so I don't see what the big deal is.

So whatever the "auto LSD" is, my light came on for it on the way home.
