With all of the quality decline we've seen starting late 2020/early 2021, I dunno if I'll even consider buying a 'new' car.

That one does look pretty sweet, though.

If I added a car to the fleet I would go LS430 or LS460. If I needed an econobox I would go with a matrix, I guess. I like my old man’s Prius if we are talking about maximum economy. Wonder if the new ones are still hatchbacks? Hatchbacks kick ass. Wait, I see a squirrel!!!

That's what I bought not long after moving up to Atlanta. 2003, V6. Traded my '03 Sierra in for it after taking damage on it the umpteenth time b/c the parking decks I was forced to park in daily weren't made for trucks that size. After the work and money I'd already put into that truck, I couldn't take it anymore.

It was a solid car. Until I drove it down to Orlando area to pick up a Muncie 4spd for my '68 C10. Damn thing leaked gear oil on my trek home, into the trunk liner, which apparently had a hole in it, which then leaked into the carpet board, through the carpet board, into the spare tire well, and soaked into the sound deadener in the base of the trunk during the 6-7 hour ride back before I realized it.

Needless to say, I could never get rid of that f'n smell. No amount of cleaning, no amount of air freshener could dampen it. Just smelled like deodorized heavy weight gear oil. I could smell it in the cab, through the trunk, it was that bad. So I traded it in in 2005 at CarMax on an '03 RSX. Not bad, 6spd MT, ~ 200hp/150tq, IIRC.

I ended up buying a '99 GTI MkIV VR6 as a ~$5k side project while I had the RSX, and it was so much more fun to drive once I got a Koni kit and a few other upgrades, I ditched the RSX and made the GTI my main ride while finishing LS swap in my C10. Fun times. I miss the pre-kids days when I could cycle thru projects more often.

 

Really happy with the way this came together. Def. need some grip tape on the top of the sliders.

I've known 2 people to each total a Yaris. Separate occasions. One of them hit a couch cushion on the freeway, and the other rear ended a cyclist. nah, they both hit other vehicles, and while they both survived, the yaris's were unrecognizable.

Tried to take a peak at the condition of the timing belt. Only took off the top two screws when I realized I needed to remove a 3rd from below to bend the plastic timing cover back more than 1/8”. For what I saw, it doesn’t appear bad but I won’t know until the spring when I take off the skid plate and kroil the crap out of that 3rd bolt to get it off. 135k miles since last replaced.

Also tried to take a 10mm 6pt box wrench to the rear brake bleeder. That motha ain’t coming off easily.

Another task to delay till the spring where if I snap a fitting I can replace the cylinder or worse, brake caliper in front if those give me issues. I feel like I’m walking on eggshells lately with my rust issues.

 

I have an LS430, and it's a nice ride for sure. It's about to roll over 300,000. However...it's a bitch to work on, and parts are really expensive!

 

You do you but I really think Rust-Oleum bed liner would work better. Grip tape may look like crap pretty quickly.

EDIT 2: Found this from 2002: "Sport Compact Car succesfully turboed the toyota matrix XRS. Adapted XS Enginnerings turbo celica GTS kit... Kept the stock compression and ran it on 91 octane.. Made 231 ponies at the wheels.. Everything worked and tested for 1000 miles with no complications.. Its possible.. Just takes dedicated tuners to get the job done right..."

 

Had a buddy in highschool always braggin on the matrix xrs his parents bought him. And it was quick, manual, wider wheels/tires, cat-back coffee can, but the dude couldnt drive. The type to pass and hit his brakes. So he got butt-hurt when we gutted my other buddies integra (reupholstered everything when we installed 3 15" woofers in a box that took up the whole backseat). The integra had coilovers and full exhaust, one of those shunk short runner intakes, tuned, lsd... anyway, matrix guy starts talking turbo and awd and all the pipedreams, so i told him it was all in the driver, and drove his car like it owed me money. Hard on the clutch and redline, and Brakes. Beat the teggy with 2 passengers. Our street track was about 5 miles of commercial backroads and behind stores, and feeders. Anyway, that made him feel worse, so i got in my gf's '97 hyundai accent, and told him to follow me and do as i do (drive smooth, keep momentum, float the rough stuff). And while chasing a 90 hp sedan on 175/65-14's with a slushbox (like 1am), he overshot an underpass uturn and folded his front end over a curb. I could tell he blamed me, so i loaned him my '80 f100 while we rebuilt his front end and within a month of us getting his car fixed he tboned some ahole and totalled it. Got his moms highlander after that. Fastest car i'd ever driven until a different buddy got an s2000. The nove was quick in a line, but didnt stand a chance on any corners.

When my buddies got cbr600rr's, and i got the zx6r, highlander/matrix guy was the regular mule. Toted all our shit, and would show up to places half an hour after us.

 

Freeze-Off works wonders.

 

LS460 is sweet. I still want one or a GS460 (2012)

 

Not in my neck of the woods. I've tried that stuff multiple times. Heat is the best but it's like playing with fire getting near a brake line and the potential to destroy rubber seals or boil brake fluid.

 

Dealership was closed so I was able to check over the Accord pretty well.

A little minimal rust starting on the rear wheel wells, tires look like Mr Clean, interior needs a good scrubbing, underneath is rust free, and the inspection is out of date (I assume from the tires)

Sent the VIN off to my sister (she's the HBIC at the local Nissan dealer) to run a Carfax just to see where it lived because it clearly wasn't here it's whole life.

If they'll work on the price a little I think it'll be a good car for a new driver.

Agree. Just the theory and practice of understanding how that works is helpful for operating many other machines. Tractors, motorcycles etc. I couldn’t even find a manual to teach my son how to drive when he turned 16. Got a Suzuki Samurai as a flip car a few months back and taught him on that while he was home for the holidays. It’s tougher than most to learn on due to its weak sauce clutch and weak sauce engine. The short gearing helps some.

 

Throw some naval jelly around the base of the bleeder, where it inserts into the housing. Coat it. Leave it on for an hour. Rinse off. Hit it with PB Blaster or Kroil. Give it a try the next day with a wrench.

That's what I learned on. 1985 GMC S15, floor shift. Glad I did too. I'm still debating with the kids though. I learned to drive in the country, didn't matter much if you rolled into a ditch, and there was nobody to hit. Learning to drive stick the heart of a city like ATL, where traffic can get heavy and folks drive like ass ...

 

Dropped bumper off at Powder coating place, probably two weeks or less, the owner wasn’t there when I dropped it off, but maybe he will remember me and push it to the front.

It's the same as the celica gt-s. The gt and base have the 1zz. The gt-s has better tuning making 180hp and a lower lift engagement point.
