I was just looking for something in the truck and happened to run across the receipt from when I had a screw repair done on one of the tires on the 4runner a couple of weeks ago. WTF...... it stated "Remove tire from wheel and repair with patch. Rebalance not included". What kind of business does not rebalance a tire after remount? I am going to call them out on it and leave a review on their site/google.

i've seen/heard them not because they'll mark where the stem is on the tire, then remount it. if they line it back up, they wont have much issue and charging you for a re-balance would not make you happy. if you didn't notice anything off with the tire on the vehicle after a few weeks, it seems they did a good job and saved you money that could be used for a charitable donation or something. calm down karen

Exactly. As long as they didn’t knock any of the existing balancing weights off of the rim when removing or re-mounting the tire and it was back in the same position on the rim, there’s absolutely no reason to rebalance it.
    That’s common practice not malpractice.
At least it was when I was working in shops years ago.

Also, if you want to pay more, there's no reason you can't go get it balanced now.

That's why I love Discount Tire.

they do exactly what needs to get done. Every time.

It's hard for me to believe anyone could compete with them on service. or price.

why one would go anywhere else is ponderous.

Won't the patch add weight and then even when installed the same position it would now be unbalanced?

Patches generally weigh less than an ounce. This tiny weight addition wouldn't be noticed. Not considering to properly apply a patch you remove a small amount of material in the space.

How freaking difficult is it to balance a tire ?!? Even for a first day on the job tire tech - it’s what 5 minutes of labor ?

What cost is there aside from that labor ?

I mean seriously - if your company is too damn cheap to allow expend the cost of its employees labor for a few minutes - how good is any warranty you write really? I at least get it when companies try to cheap out on repair va replacement for example - the parts aren’t free and someone is paying for them. Repair though is cost of labor only - and when that labor time is minimal - you just do it and make sure there are not further issues.

There’s a fine line to me between “permissible” and “doing the right thing” - yes. It is permissible to do this - and odds are there are no balance issues to be corrected. BUT - checking it to be 100% sure cost nothing and if there was an issue - it would be caught/corrected before any damage could take place.

It’s not as if he was asking for anything more than a simple precautionary check - that should have been offered. Took the tech as long to write up their excuse for not doing it as it would have taken to do it and be done likely. That’s the stuff that drives me nuts - techs spending more time getting out of work than just doing their damn job.

A rebalance isn't needed if the tire is remounted in the same position as it was and no weights were removed or added..

I would bet that the patch weighs less than 1/4 of an ounce.. It's like having a small rock stuck in your tread.

Rely on Google all you like - I will stick to my personal experience and knowledge knowing that if someone is taking 30 minutes to 2 hours to balance a wheel - it’s only because they tossed the wheel on the balancer and then went to lunch while it was spinning there.

What your quoting is the entire damn appointment - from customer dropping keys at service - tech pulling the car back into a bay and getting a wheel off - then placing the wheel on the balancer/performing any other services needed (likely your not just getting a single wheel balance checked - most likely at minimum your getting all 4 checked and rotated at minimum).

So yea - if your talking a 4 tire rotation with each balanced - 30-45 minutes is possible - but tech time is closer to 15-20 minutes work - divide that by 4 - and you get the actual time needed to balance a single damn tire.

If some kid making 12.50 an hour at Walmart can do it - it can’t be too difficult.

Seriously - I’m far from an expert on auto repair - but if someone told me it would take them possibly a couple hours to balance a single damn tire because the machine takes that long to get a reading on the spinning wheel - I’m going elsewhere because that person has absolutely zero idea what they are doing. Even larger/heavier all terrain tires which are tougher to balance shouldn’t take near that long per tire. Maybe 10-15 minutes of out of balance - but to simply CONFIRM balance - I’m sticking to 5 minutes - including time to remount the wheel/tire.

    easy greasy.

i know it don't take forever. i've watched someone do it while i was 5' from them. agreed that it doesn't take too long, but did take about 10 mins mount to dismount from the machine.
my sarcasm font doesn't show up automatically. but, add up all the 10 mins you've saved in a day slinging people in and out without doing un-necessary stuff and you've saved/made a bit of money. would it be good, sure. i believe this is getting a little derailed from OP complaining about a service not getting done that wasn't paid for, asked for, noticed, etc.

now....still waiting on OP to return to update us on how hot his keyboard got leaving that google review.

A few weeks ago I was at the dealership and asked them to fix a slow leak, which turned out to be a screw. They did not rebalance the wheel, nor did they charge me a penny to fix it.
