What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I feel like I should know this by now, but what are they and what size?

 

On that truck Falken’s at 265/70-16 the lighter AT3Ws

 

I know it’s a different vehicle but I’m thoroughly impressed with the AT3Ws on the wrangler vs the Toyo Open country’s, K02s, and the Kenda Klevers currently on my truck.

 

I installed the swing case I got for Christmas today. I definitely going to need the other side now.

 

What makes the AT3's perform better? Do they do well in snow?

 

I had to adjust my headlights again today. I learned a lesson about using cheap housings. I have to adjust these every few months.

So.... I've been trying to set up a rear diff and am having a bitch of a time sourcing side bearing shims, without ordering an entire bearing or install kit. After spending way too many hours researching, I may have stumbled upon something. I believe the toyota 8.4" rear diff carrier side bearings/shims are compatible with those of a Dana 44. Can anyone confirm that this is correct or not?
FWIW sourcing most parts for our rear diff isn't so simple. We do have the same diff that was used in the T100's and alot of the V6 tacos, but not all. There are several sites that listed my truck 'not compatible' or 'no search results'. I had more success searching for T100 parts. Do any 1st gen Tundras NOT have a 8.4", 30 spline rear diff? I know there is an 8" made by toyota, but it's incompatible with the 8.4"

 

The titan has a 'dana 44' copy, but everything looks so much beefier.



isnt there a diff guru out there on the west coast? Might be worth a call to pick their brain.

gasser tank was about the same price as the RA tank, but like 1.5 gallons, and would require a pump, regulator, and would probably only work visually with squatted trucks. And i forgot to remove the pic when i found the 'cheap' transfer tank.

 

You try calling ECGS? They seem to be up on Toyota diff stuff.

The 8" is 27 spline pinion gear, same ring gear size. The 8.4" is a 30 spline pinion gear, same ring gear size.
The difference is mostly the pinion flange and strength of the thicker pinion gear.

They are interchangeable with the matching pinion flange or adapter flange iirc.

The 8, 8.2 and 8.4 just denotes the slight stronger and higher spline count pinion gear.


I'd just order shims from toyota once I've measured backlash. Or call west coast differentials (differentials.com), they probably have an aftermarket shim kit they can sell you.

 

Well I’ve been going through all my shit I’ve collected over the years. I have all the bearings to for a 8.4” rear diff and a 7.5” front. So I guess I’ll start getting parts ready for a regear. 33” tires now. Might go 32” later (but years from now). Would y’all go 4.10 or 4.30?

 

If you have 4.3's I'd go with them for 33's.

4.10's are fine too since you have the 5sp.

 

I’ve got a few 4.10 sets laying around. I’ve never really hurt for gearing when towing. But I’m sitting at like 2500rpm doing 85. Seems a bit low. 4.10 might be the better answer if I decide to down size to 32s later.

 

If absolutely no chance of bigger than 33's then 4.10's.

 

Yea no this trucks use case Is limited to country roads and stuff with towing it’s main goal. 3 years ago the story was different. But I’m swimming in Tacomas now.

Even had time to R&R the rain guards this afternoon after having to "get at the passenger side" with serious elbow grease ..

Con's "Artistic" eye helps when doing straight lines & bodywork.. and then put the poor thing to work..

The bed has a Christmas tree and misc. lawn shrubs filling it.... transfer station run in the AM..

 

I don’t really regret 4.56 but I do feel compelled to go a bit bigger on tires. I don’t go 85 in the Tundra much other than that long drive to Oregon.
