Since these keys don't have chips I've heard the dealerships don't charge a lot. I'll probably go by there.

 

I think the dealer here charged me like $12.

 

I wouldn't worry about that. The locksmith can always come out to your truck and test it or you can do it yourself while you're there. I think the only thing you lose is that plastic head to the key by hitting up a locksmith.

 

It depends on who you ask, everyone has their perspective. From my perspective, it depends on how the key is cut.

Theoretically, the little barrels (keyway pins) inside the lock cylinder - the things the notches on your key engages - are different lengths. There's only a few sizes possible, but I don't remember if the steps are, like, half millimeter steps between pins, full millimeter steps, fractional, or what.

Anyway ... say your key steps from a 1 pin, to a 2 pin, then 5, 4, 1, 2. If the person cutting your key is cutting based on the step sizes, you'll get a fresh, crisp key like what came cut from the factory. If you're using one of those shitty key cutter machines at your local hardware that just traces across your existing key, using it as a guide for the grinder on the other side to cuts an exact replica into a generic key blank, you're going to get a duplicate with X# years wear on it right off the bat.

Bonus perk to the dealership - and I have yet to see anyone saying they got charged more than $20 for blank and cutting - is you get an OEM key blank to go with it.

Basically, those pins being standardized lengths is how a locksmith can come to your house and rekey every lock barrel at your house to the exact same key. They just check the barrel length and order on the key or lock cylinder, and replace the pins with correct length/order to make them all the same. You can buy keyway pin assortments to do it yourself if you're brave enough (I'm not)

Our Lowes used to have a couple of old dudes that knew everything about locksmithing, plumbing and electrical. The used to cut keys for free if you had the blank. They would also rekey cylinders for nothing. The manual key machine got replaced with a kiosk that takes credit cards and the old dudes got replaced with diverse females that don’t know anything about hardware. Unfortunately they already put the mom and pop stores out of business. Ugh.

 

MEK is some nasty shit! An organic vapor respirator is a must.

Yup. Not as bad as inhaling paint w/isocyanates, like Spray2k Max. But pretty gnarly stuff.

Crazy, I do the same thing, I was just looking for my MEK whip-it.

 

The only thing you are ignoring is that the lock cylinder is old & worn down too.

If you have multiple Tundri like @Tundra2 old worn lock cylinders & keys can sometimes mean 1 key works both trucks. BTDT

 

This reminds me.

Neighbor near me has an issue with his 1GT. When the truck is running and the key is in the ON position, you can pull it out. When he does, the cylinder gets locked and won't turn forward, backward or anything until he gets a key from another Tundra with a different key pattern, insert it and pull it out again, and suddenly it starts working again.

I told him he may just need to spray some dry lube in there and work a key in and out to lube the tumblers, but ... I was just surprised he could even pull the key out while in any position other than OFF. Later model DC, maybe '04-'06? Never did hear back whether spray lube worked. I told him to order a blank to keep in the glovebox in case it happens again, gave him the part number.

 

I owe a bumper photo. But I got sidetracked by tree removal. Now I have parking spaces for my trifecta of pickup trucks. I can die happy.

 

Yeah man! Trees are overrated. Especially the pine variety!

 

Currently sitting here with our oldest (7yr old) who may have appendicitis . Hoping her symptoms settle because I really don’t wanna take her to the ER. Also, I’m getting very hungry!

Get her some beet juice. It might not help, but when grandma would make me drink home remedies like that, it made me 2nd guess complaining about ailments. Hope she's ok.

How long has she had symptoms? Is she super miserable, and has it been pretty constant? Keep us updated

 

My dad had an 84 toyota pickup back in the day that would do the same thing.

She’s typically not one to complain. Fever yesterday and didn’t eat anything after 2pm. Then at 3am this morning she woke us up crying that her stomach hurt. Vomited basically nothing but then still complained about lower right abd pain. Still has a fever. Just now getting settle but the pain isn’t worse which is good. Gonna take her into the office when it opens to check her white count and go from there.

 

Oof hope she's feeling better soon.

I went in for that a few years ago fortunately they were able to load me up with antibiotics and it avoided me having to have surgery.

 

Really? I always thought that if it was swollen and an issue they just laparoscopically take er out.

 

Yeah I’d have that extra part removed myself.

 

Honestly it shouldn’t take more than 90 minutes with a decent set of 1/4” sockets.

 

Were the only country that does that. Most other countries just give you Rocephin and let it encapsulate itself. Surgery pays better though.

Recentish deal. Something like 70% respond to antibiotics and 50% are still good after 4 years.

 

That's the one thing I don't miss much from FL. I had to park under one, and went through hand sanitizer like it was beef jerky (easy sap removal).

Good papa. You know the symptoms, that sounds like a dead ringer, but you never know. Lower right, appendix, lower left, usually constipation. Better safe than sorry.

Keep us posted. Nobody wants their little one to go under knife. We had our fair share of major procedures with both kids before age 8. It's no fun!

One of my team members from Brazil, I flew him up here in 2018 to help with an office reloc. Flew in, got to the hotel, "stomach ache", he thought the plane food got him. Got HR on the horn to figure out how benefits/medical would work for him as a BR citizen. He went to a walk-in clinic, took some films, told him "ah, it's indigestion" and they sent him back with laxatives. He was miserable the next 3 days, flew home.

Next day he doesn't show up for work. No clue where he is. Ended up calling over the weekend, "Surgery went well, but I'll be out for the next 2 weeks... landed in Sao Paulo, went straight to the ER, 25 minutes later I was being rushed to the OR. Appendix burst!"

Great example of how dicked up our healthcare system is. Overpaying for underservice.
