Anyone every tow a 5th wheel trailer with their short bed Crewmax

Looking to buy a camper and I like the 5th wheel models better then the tag model. I also like the tongue weight being over the rear wheels.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

 

I know that early on there was pin box positioning issues with the 2nd gens when they first appeared due to the short bed but seems to have been resolved over time. I don't tow a 5th wheel but have seen a few CMax's towing 5th's and once talked to an individual at Great Sand Dunes Nat'l Park who was towing a 5th wheel from Connecticut to Cali with his 2012 CM. I did see that and it looks pretty solid. Was hoping to find someone who has logged some miles with that set up or something similar.

 

I hauled my 310 Keystone 5th with my 10' crewmax, I installed a reese slider hitch but not in the position that the instructions called for. I moved it back a few inches just for the extra room, though the load was still positioned over the axle. I just recently traded up for a 14' double cab, much easier to maneuver.

 

That's one of the advantages of the DCab. Don't no why Toyota doesn't offer a 6.5' bed option with CMax. They would sell them all.

 

i believe they have a 145" chassis, just only special order with the double cab

 

There's an outfit up in Utah that does conversions for CMs, both 6.5 and 7.5 footers. The only problem is you can likely kiss your factory warranty goodbye

Wife tows horse trailer (bumper pull) with our '08 Tundra. If we get another (140k on ours presently) we will look into 5th wheel trailer but the hitch I favor is recessed under the bed floor so we can still use the pickup to haul "stuuff" between times.
Why would you prefer a bolt-in that takes up the bed space?

I use the Demco DM8550040 slider in My 14 1794 CM without any problems. I pull a 27 ft Outback fifth wheel without any issues. The downside is it big, and heavy 355 pounds with the rails. etrailer has good customer service, and fast shipping. The Demco works smoothly, and eliminates almost all of the fifth wheel "bucking". The Reese sidewinder looks interesting, and is about the same money. I have not seen one in actual use, but the videos are entertaining.

 

I bought a Reese sidewinder and a Reese 15000 fifth wheel hitch. I installed the hitch so it’s center is 2” in front of my rear axle, the most they recommended. I pulled my fleetwood prowler 315bts (8,000lbs dry weight) over 500kms/300miles with great ease, up and down hills, I highly recommend this, the pic shows it almost to 90 degree turn, I’m sure I could jackknife it, don’t forget to use 10ply tires…

 

And I only buy used trucks because so many don’t even break them in before flipping them

Grand design has a “150” series fifth wheel rev designed to be pulled by 1/2 ton trucks. However, I still think the tundra would be over payload capacity using this option
