My brother just bought a 2013 Tundra and wanted to go for a ride so I suggested Squaw Peak Road. This is a 25ish mile long stretch of very rocky, very overgrown road that begins in Provo Canyon and comes back out of Left Fork in Hobble Creek Canyon.

I have driven this road numerous times but it's been a few years since I've been up there.

    SquawPeakRoute.jpg

At approximately 40.247975, -111.577934 we stopped to have a snack, a beer, stretch our legs and just enjoy the scenery. We've had a lot of rain here lately, which is pretty out of the ordinary for July in Utah, and as a result there are quite a few deep puddles on this trail. As we pulled into the clearing I noticed a side trail that wound down the hill to the northeast. Looking down the trail I discovered the following:
    20170729_114750.jpg
    20170729_114757.jpg
    20170729_114822.jpg
We visually investigated but didn't get too close. We had some conversation about how long it must have been there and decided it couldn't have been too long, and that the owners might show up to retrieve it. We sat down on some conveniently-placed logs and enjoyed some Applegate salami, a variety of cheeses, and some hard boiled eggs (I'm on a ketogenic diet).

After about 30 minutes a black Ford F150 Ecoboost shows up and two very Mormon guys pop out with the cutest little brown boxer named Daisy. Turns out one of them had been up here late the night before and had attempted to gun it through the water before getting stuck. They pulled out some rappelling line and went into the drink to hook up to the entombed Ranger. I offered my 30,000lb recovery strap but they politely declined.

After a few minutes they were rigged and ready to pull. My brother and I moved our vehicles out of the way to give them ample space, and watched from the other side of our vehicles with the kids - just in case their line snapped. After a couple minutes of spinning tires, kicked up dust, and burnt rubber, they gave up. They asked if we would still be willing to help and I told them that of course I would. They suggested that I hook on to the F150s front tow hooks and assist him pulling, which I found ludicrous. I suggested that they just let me try to pull him out as I've pulled a couple of people, including a brand new Tacoma, out of similar predicaments.

They accepted and I hooked up. My brother recorded the recovery, although he started recording after my initial tug and before the Ranger's driver had entered the vehicle. After I showed that it could be moved he went into the drink and eventually into the driver's seat to steer as we resumed our marine salvage operation.

    https://youtu.be/eDafmUTRlX8

4lo and a few seconds later and he was on dry land again.

We donated some clean water to help clean up his engine compartment, which was filthy with mud. I suggested he check his air box before attempting to start, just to make sure he hadn't sucked up anything too chunky, and it looked to be in good shape. We provided a jump start as his battery was dead, and that little Ranger started right up. He idled for a few minutes before it died - he was positive it was his alternator and had brought tools and a new alternator to replace it. We gave them some clean drinking water and first aid (dude #2 had cut his finger pretty bad rigging up his tow line) and were on our way.

All in all had a great day. Scratched the shit out of my clear coat on both sides of my truck due to the very narrow road and overgrown trees and bushes as you get on the more difficult parts of the road.

Took a bunch of great pics - really a beautiful drive that I highly recommend if you are in the area and have 2-3 hours.

Video shows unavailable, but great pics and story. Was just thinking yesterday I haven't pulled anyone out with the Tundra yet, though the Tacoma saw it's fair share, and then some.

Video was rendering, it's available now. It's nothing too fancy but thought it was kind of cool.

Last time I pulled someone out was around 2 AM and someone in a local Tundras/Tacomas group posted saying they were stuck in the mud in an area that's fairly near me (I'm out in the sticks so they got lucky). I showed up and they had given up and resumed drinking.. Got home after pulling them out and my wife was wondering why the hell I was gone so late and why the hell my truck was so muddy.

Can't exactly tell but if you hooked up to the tow ball you risked it. Shouldn't ever hook up to the tow ball for recovery.

It is. I didn't hook it up - I was in the truck and he hooked on. I specifically told him to tie off to the hitch receiver. I actually mentioned to my wife as we left that I should have gotten out and hooked up, but was glad that all went well.

I really wish I had video of that F150 spinning his tires!

I was glad to be there to help. Other than those guys we only saw two other vehicles on that trail - a dirtbike and a built Jeep. They probably would have found help but it would have taken awhile.

It was 4wd, and he had it in 4 lo... He had AT tires that were fairly beefy too. I'm honestly not sure what the issue was but I shit you not all four tires just spun in the dirt. It wasn't even muddy where he was..

I've heard that of the Ecoboost. Not enough torque 'till it makes boost, then too much all at once and it all breaks free.

I was just going to ask if the F-150 was an EB. I have experienced that, even on dry pavement. However, if one is spinning tires on dirt or pavement...kinda defeats the purpose right? They do well for towing if you like shit fuel economy.

I've had them as rentals multiple times and I can vouch - they do spin the tires on the pavement. It can actually be kind of fun.. :burnrubber:

Yes they can. I took my buddies brand new 16 EB and damn near needed to buy him a set of rear tires. We were laughing like a pack of hyenas.

The last one I had was in Louisville KY - if you fly in and go to the Crowne Plaza near Churchill Downs you can retrace my steps by following the black lines in the asphalt.
