Pros ,Cons on 2022 and newer Tundras

Yeah I’d love that, too. Don’t get me wrong; I think it’s a great truck. Seems like it does everything the previous gen does more efficiently and effortlessly. I trust Toyota with a complicated, tech-rich truck more than anyone else to be honest.

I go from “yeah, I’d love to buy one down the road” to “I just need to go HD”.

 

That tech aint pulling 30mpg or 10k lbs. lots of flak from being a first year truck, but its not a first year engine. As if the world around you isnt a sensory overload, lets allow hands free and text to speech distractions. These 'folks' dont have to pay attention to the lines (vibrating steering wheel), or speedmatch (radar cruise), or use mirrors (blind spot indicators) it used to be more noticable with the eurotrash, but its spread to everything newer than '08.

its not driving, its traveling in an appliance.

 

I thought this site was good for information about making these trucks better by sharing info, internet trolls are bringing this site down.

I agree, there's a constructive way to give feedback both negative and positive, and no need to rehash every point repeatedly. But there does seem to be a number of non owners and non 3rd gen owners that seem to dominate most of these threads and conversations.

i'm just poking fun cause im jelly. I drive old stuff, and only recently started getting things with factory CD players.

but you gotta admit, turbos and v6's were a bad idea for the market. Flimsy trim and computer issues have surfaced. Imagine what they'll be like in 20 years.

 

So just because someone doesn’t share your opinion, they are trolls? I for one don’t care for the 3rd gen. If I were to buy one now equipped exactly like mine, it would cost $10-11k more than what I paid. There isn’t that much money in better stuff from my 20 to a 23. I will say we do get the occasional first time poster, aka troll, posting something negative just to get shit started. But if your feelings get hurt because they talked bad about your truck, then the internet isn’t for you. Just my opinion of course. Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.

 

I understand why the new truck is polarizing. Toyotas have historically been simple, overbuilt, slow to change, not tech-filled, etc. Most people here expected the new truck to debut way out front of the pack the way the 2nd gen did. I could not care less the way a truck looks. Trucks are supposed to be utilitarian vehicles. I understand those days are long over. But my big criticism is still that Toyota barely addressed the payload issue. Frustrating.

I also don’t think that having a different opinion makes someone a troll. Most criticisms of the new truck on this forum are also found within various industry reviews.

 

My opinions are facts.

the title invites criticism. Theres enough 'good' trucks that the bad are 'flukes'. But still shows you cant 'absolutely rely' on the manufacturers. Gotta give em time to work things out, get production in-tune...

 

I also expected it to lead the pack like they did back when the 07 came out. I was so ready to get out of my 2020 lease and into a new gen but not at theses prices. I also understand the whole shutdown situation but I wasn’t about to pay $10-11k more for the nothing exceptional. The funny part is that Toyota will do the same to the 3rd gen and it will follow the 2nd gens footsteps when it comes to updates/refresh. All the 3rd gen people will all be screaming, when will Toyota give us something better, the truck is dated. Same think the 2nd gen people did.

 

Guess maybe it was just his opinion on how he viewed other opinions?

 

Most of those things are becoming mandated in different countries and states for safety, less dead people is always a good thing.

back to the thread. I owned an 07, 14, 16 and 19 tundra. They were all essentially the same and great trucks (that all had issues of carrying sorts) but I wanted something new. I sold my 19 last year for more than I paid for it with 45k on the clock. I sold off all the parts and invested the cash safely for a few months and got a 3rd gen with a lowe payment than my 19, essentially same term I had left on my 19. The new truck is superior in every way. Yes it has some issues, but toyota has fixed them or is going to in January when I drop her off for a few weeks (window mouldings, door rattle- all other tundras have rattled). Would I go back to a gen 2? Only if my 22 left me completely stranded and with no warranty, I love the truck way more than any of my other tundras.

 

Have owned two 2.5s, now a 2022 1794 no regrets.

That's to be expected since it's a Tundra forum and there are relatively very few new gen members vs. previous gen members. Same thing happened with the 3rd gen Tacoma. Ultimately the newer gen owners will dominate. It's just a function of time/sales. Human nature doesn't change.

Does your truck have…

…a combined fuel economy within ~3 MPG* of my truck on average? Check.
…low-ish payload that prevents you from towing more than 8k lbs without being over GVWR, especially if your family is in the truck? Check.

I don’t judge anyone for buying this truck. I am a Toyota fan, and I like the 3rd Gen. I think they look great, and it makes a lot of sense if you tow at altitude.

But dammit I wanted more capability. Really just more payload. You know, the #2 complaint of 2nd Gen owners behind fuel economy? Instead, we get a truck that realistically does not do that much more; it just does it more efficiently and effortlessly.

I am still hoping that when the time comes for me to buy a new truck, Toyota offers a heavy duty payload package or max trailering package. 2k lbs of payload isn’t too much to ask. GM and Ford offer 2k+ lbs of payload on crew cab 4x4 half-ton trucks.

I had a thought how they could easily do just that, regarding the payload

give the non hybrid trucks the same gvwr as the hybrid trucks with the selection of some type of payload package.

that would be an easy way to at least offer something.

as far as significantly more, it’s just bigger truck time at that point.

for me the new payload rating is just fine for my 1/2 ton duties. If I need to carry something heavy, we have a transit 350 high roof at work, that thing has a lot of payload capacity

I think in the future, they could even enter the 3/4 ton market. The iForce max is already more powerful than every stock gas HD engine.

 

my fuel economy not towing is 4-6 mpg better than my other trucks with similar builds and wheels/ tires.

payload was a slight increase, would have loved more- but have beefed up my suspension to help with added weight.

Our camper is 4k loaded down and wet and my jet boat weights about 4k with trailer, drift boat is only 1k, never tow heavier.

 

I don’t do long distance towing but I can see it as a problem for those who do. It has also been discussed here. I would like to know what “superior” means, not the first time someone has said it. Does it mean that if you pull 7k trailer with a 21 and a 23, that it’s like towing 7k with a 21 compared to a Duramax?

 

I can get 16 combined for a whole tank with 285/75R18s, skids, a retractable bed cover, and a dual battery setup. I would probably get 19-20 in a 3rd gen with the same mods.

Not quite, but yeah, the TTv6 tows the same load with minimal apparent effort. All of its torque is down low.

As long as they are informed with the facts about the new models I don't care. But knowledge from a test drive does not equal understanding on a level that ownership does.
