13mpg in town and 16.6mpg on the highway

Boost is key. Keep it out of the range where there's no boost and that's probably peak mileage. Reducing speed helps too. I had a Volvo C30 that got like 20mpg at 80+mph. At 65, solid 30-31mpg. Single turbo 5 cylinder. Boost is key.

 

I can't help with your issue, but can relay what I've been getting. I drive a reasonable mix of freeway cruising and backroads and would guess I average 18.5-19.5 usually. I will say that if I do hardly any idling, such as waiting for my wife at the grocery store, I will drop to 15-16 pretty quickly with just one stop. I have never gotten mileage as poor as yours though and on the flip side have only seen 22 a handful of times and that was about a 3 hour trip 100% freeway. I will add that I drive like a granny, speed limit on back roads, limit plus 5 on freeway is usually my range.

 

27 mile commute one way. I gain 200 to 300 elevation going to work and lose it coming home. Very gradual incline. I average 21 uphill and 25 downhill on the confuser. That's 4 minutes of idle warmup in the morning and none on the way home. Slight variations have tremendous implications. I keep it about 70.

It reminds me that in the crazy world we live in there are people that still believe in buying a 6,000lb truck for mpg. I am with Black Wolf, go buy a Prius.

 

Not many buy a full size pickup and give thought to the fuel economy......I'll take horsepower over MPG any day.....thats why I got the truck in the first place. I only check my fuel mileage every once in a while for the heck of it. If MPG is what concerns you, have at it.

 

This is not Russia or China, people are free to discuss whatever they want.

I own a 22 Tundra and I actually like my MPG. It's better than my older tundra. So what if he diss it? I'm not losing sleep over it.

 

I think still want to know how long @reelentless idles his truck, if at all. Would go a long way to explaining his numbers…

Lest anyone forget, idling is factoring in an MPG of 0 to your tank average.

Idle time is huge. It was pretty cold here a few days ago. Lot's of idle time going on. Adds up. Actually doesn't add up. It's too bad there isn't a total "time running" programmed into the ECU.

 

You have over 400 hp and you are getting 16mpg.

You are getting phenomenal gas mileage.

 

I would hope he knows how to calculate that because he was willing to give town and highway numbers. Who knows... The OP doesn't really care to answer anyone's questions.

 

Would be nice to have an idle time or total running time. Our fleet diesels have idle hours, we have actually been denied warranty because of high idle hours. I think the ratio for Ford is like every 1000 idle hours in 50k milage.

 

I notice that the winter mileage hit is as much or more cold temps. If we get an early cold snap here before they switch to winter fuels my mileage drops. I also notice an increase on warm winter days. Not sure about the newer motors but the 5.7s steadily improve during break in. A service manager told me he had people seeing increases up to 10k.

 

I was averaging 16.7 mpg both city/hwy. Just last night I reset the trip meter and took a 40 min drive, was then averaging 21-22 mpg going 70 mph .

 

I like to use the throttle on my 5.7 and see about the same in city driving, and just a bit under highway.

 

That’s ridiculous. I get 23-24 mpg with cruise set to 65 mph on the freeway. Do you all reset your fuel economy meter??? Is the truck stock???

 

My 5.7 is stock and I get the same highway at 70-75. My city is only 10-13 though.

 

Accelerating too slowly results in poorer fuel economy due to the engine running outside of optimal range longer. There is a happy medium to accelerate up to speed with traffic and get to cruising speed more quickly.

 

Time to upgrade that fuel tank, SR problem… same reason why I can’t get a sequoia to replace the tundra.

that’s pretty shit mileage. If I leave my house in Boise, climb up the hills to the highway and set cruise at 70mph to Caldwell, cruise through town, eat dinner and drive back I net 18-20 with 35’s, 3 in lift, bumper+winch+lights, topper, decked system, and the worlds biggest fuel economy killer (next to bigger tires) … fly rod holders on the roof. I reset my trip odometer every time I leave the house, only way to gauge it realistically. This time of year we have so much idling and warm up that just chews the already crappy winter blend gas fuel economy

 

Man, that makes me wonder if your parking brake is dragging or something. It should be 30-50% better than that, especially cruising at that speed.

 

It’s not size it’s weight and contact patch- how much more do they weight over stock? How much wider are they? How much more aggressive is the tread vs stock?

 

You obviously don't know what you bought.

These trucks aren't designed to be modified and turned into ORVs. They were made to be fuel efficient on man made roads And have power when towing. They are work trucks, not mobile trophies. If you're that worried about fuel economy, sell your tires and buy a tank of gas.
Turbos suck fuel. If the turbo has to spool because you put lead shoes on the truck, that's your problem not Toyota. If you don't like it, write a bad review, trade it in for a Cummins and enjoy buying diesel fuel.

Likely that the derated SR only differes at WOT. For normal, mpg focused driving, I'm sure the fuel tables are identical. You're using maybe 75 hp to daily drive. You wouldn't notice a difference

 

the sr engine might be overworked and burning more fuel to get up to speed, that’s definitely possible

 

Something’s wrong. With 33” LTs, you should not be getting ~15-16 mpg combined if your highway cruising is at 62mph. Unless you let your truck idle for an hour each day, lol.

I’d disconnect the (-) battery cable for 20 min, hook it back up, and see if it was something with the computer. Maybe you already tried that? Slim chance it’ll help, but worth a shot.
