13mpg in town and 16.6mpg on the highway

Hey gang, I bought my new Tundra about four months ago. To say I'm getting lousy mileage is an understatement. 13mpg in town and 16.6mpg on the highway. I drive like I'm on my way to my own funeral, very slowly. (If you get behind me, it'll piss you off :

In doing some research, it appears that there are "good" trucks and "bad" trucks out there and I clearly have a bad one. Big bummer as I really like everything else about the truck.

What to do.

A few threads on gas mileage as you probably have figured out by now (a forum search will give you more info as you can read through them).

Those owners have also posted what they have or plan to do.

It gets better in some cases…or stays the same.
I get 18mpg mixed driving and I am 3” lifted and on 295 tires so I might have gotten a good truck.

 

Look at Fuelly for real world 2022 and 2023 Tundra fuel economy. Also, if you let your truck warm up for extended periods of time when you start it, that’s a big part of your problem. Check your tire pressures, especially in freezing temps—lower pressures are a bit more comfy to ride on, but higher pressures are a bit more friendly to fuel economy. I can get significantly better fuel economy than cruise control, especially radar cruise. It’s not difficult for me to average 16mpg on a tank of gas on 285/75s in my 5.7 truck. Everyone’s fuel economy takes a bit of a hit on winter fuel.

 

Your experience matches my real world experience as well. Not sure how guys are getting 22+ MPG on anything but a highway road trip, I averaged 15.5 over 3000 miles with no warm up idle time (garaged). I don't drive aggressively at all, nor speed. Always posted speed limit +4 mph, unless it's 80, then I drive 75.

 

Sure not good drivers and bad drivers? I got 19.5 mostly highway in my stock 2wd TRD Sport. I don't drive like granny but typically 70 per cent of my peers best me off the line stop light to stop light. And going high 70s on interstate I get passed a bunch like I was standing still.

 

City driving- how many stop signs/ long stop lights? traffic? hills? lots of stop and go? short trips?- all kill fuel economy

Highway- hills? speed limit? Driving too slow and grandpa like will cause more fuel consumption- constantly braking and getting back up to speed.

 

Try driving more aggressive? Perhaps you’re lugging around in acceleration when the motor has the power to spool up efficiently in speed

 

I get 21 mpg when going 70mph or less on the highway. I'm not sure how you're getting 16.6... that's almost as low as my city driving.

 

My guess is that he idles a lot, probably either letting his truck warm up before he leaves or frequently sitting in it finishing a phone call with it running.

 

I agree.

OP, you should try resetting your trip meter right as you get on the highway and drive for 30 minutes. If you're still getting less than 19mpg on that trip, then you definitely have a bad truck.

 

He’s not using the hybrid E99 methonal jet fuel. I just here for the comments of another spam thread.

 

if he goes 30 mins pure freeway, shouldnt he be expecting the 22/23? 4wd/2wd? I go 70 in a 65 and I can get evic to read 20-25 from random headwinds, the mpg does go down severely whenever you just look at the throttle

I have never gotten 22/23 MPG on the highway while doing 65mph, but I bought my truck in October, so I'm getting slightly reduced fuel economy with winter blend gas. I could probably see 22 or 23 in the summer, but I'll wait and see.

 

I'm averaging around 15 mpg around town in a 2013 with 118k on it. I never gave a second thought to fuel economy...if I had, I'd be driving a Prius

 

I would like to block or ignore whatever it is some people. But, I get enjoyment out listen to them raddle. Actually, I don't hear them. But, reading what they write I can imagine how they sound.

 

I get consistent 20-21 in town and 22-24 highway. More highway I drive higher mpg number gets. Now on interstate it usually around 22 if running 70-75.

 

i got my truck late nov, July ordered, its got like 700 miles, I get 20-25 on the main speedo and on the infotainment screen when going 70 in a 65. The best I have seen is like a 20.5 when shutting off the truck, but that at best was still 80/20 freeway/city. If I reset and go the only 10 miles on freeway to work before I go local, it shows 24+ easy, once I hit city it basically reads like 13, then you get a avg.

So tldr, even in winter blend, i get the EPA highway miles (or very close to it) but local i am still waaaaaaaay off 13-14 instead of 17

 

I don't pay attention to the main cluster MPG. I get 21 when shutting off the truck, so I don't see anything different.

Either way, YMMV when it comes to fuel economy.

 

I don’t think the OP is spamming. He’s been viewing other 3rd gen fuel economy threads and most recently looked at a thread talking about disabling auto start/stop. I think he was just honestly expecting better.

We’ll see if the replies ran him off.

What's wrong with wanting more fuel economy? Anyone who wants a few mpg or EPA rated mpg more should just buy a Prius then?

To the rest of you assholes, I suggest you try therapy.

 

The 3rd generation are turbo correct?

Turbo charged engines are designed to give power under acceleration (torque) , not speed. The cpu senses more air (from the turbo) and feeds more fuel.

You can do 15mph under the limit, but if you're a race horse out of the gate, your turbo will spool and the engine will feed more fuel.

Try easing off the throttle when you accelerate (keep the rpms down!) I don't know when the turbos start to spool on the 3rd gens, but if you have a boost gauge, keep it below positive pressure to reduce fuel consumption.

Depending on how the turbos are setup (sequential or inline) you will have boost. It's the nature of the beast. But try to keep it low while also being safe on the roads.
