What is this noise? For reference, my truck has about 90k miles and is supercharged.

Sounds like an alternator bearing failing to me.

You need a mechanics stethoscope or a funnel and a water hose.

I have the same noise. Used a mechanics stethoscope as I thought it was the tensioner, nope, alternator bearing. Put the scope rod on the Alt while running, it's incredibly loud. I need to order new Alternator, just expensive.

Mine is worse when cold. Probably what little grease that's left in the bearings hardens up the colder it gets.

Well that sucks, I have a similiar whine when it's cold and sometimes goes away sometimes doesn't. And looked like a pain to remove alternator since it shows the power steering pump has to be moved. Shit.....

And it only has 45k on the odometer

It's worse when it's cold. Rocko9999's explanation sounds right to me. Bummer.

Not sure the pump has to come out if you remove it from the bottom, but it's a pain regardless, plus the cost. OEM is about $350 for 150amp alternator. I'm not going through the hassle to have a cheap auto parts alt break in 12 months. Sad thing is it's only the bearings that are bad. Not sure anyone rebuilds these anymore.
