Rear Shocks, What a Bee-Och

Tundramen,

Spent 2 half days fighting with these factory shocks on back.
The ONLY thing that worked was to use my Dremel tool.
Had to use a cut off wheel. About 3/4 of an inch around the circumference, needed
Cuts into the chrome shaft. After that and a MF of a time squeeze my Vise Grip pliers.
FINALLY got the shaft to quit spinning. It took some time to cut into the shaft to make
Enough friction for the Vice grips to bite into. If you are planning this anytime within the next century, get some penetrating oil on those nuts and bolts.

 

Mine are still sitting in the corner waiting for an install one year after I put on the fronts. At least my bed bolts are removable.

 

Luckily, the WEEK before I did mine, I inherited a snap on pneumatic reciprocating saw, which just barely fit between the frame and the truck bed and was able to cut off the nuts, only took about half an hour of sawing for each.

 

I ground two flat spots into the shaft of each rear shock with an angle grinder and a grinding stone. That let me get enough grip on them with vise grips to remove the nut on top.

 

Only one blade required for both?

 

BMF's and snowbobs shocks didnt put up any fight.

 

Oddly enough, I removed 2 dead shocks. They were KYB brand. Thought only Bill-Stumps were fitted
To these Tundras.

My 2000 FGT had KYB shocks all around when I bought it. It’s the TRD off-road version with the progressive front coils.

 

That’s pretty normal on older vehicles. At the shop I work at we usually just end up grinding them off anyway. Too much time involved with trying to break the nut free with it spinning.

 

I just split the nuts.
Had to do it on my Tundra and Buddy’s Tacoma.
