So here's goes my chrome delete transformation for my 2022 Limited. All along i wanted an SR5 TRD Sport (with premium pkg with black softex seats and 14in screen) because of my preference of the all body color look. I always thought, and still think that the TRD Sport is the best looking version of the tundra in my opinion.

I looked for months with no luck so I considered flying out of state to buy one but the dealer that i did find one was not selling to out of state buyers (this was at the beginning of the year). So I gave up. So my next option was to find a limited (because of the standard softex seats and 14in screen options), and then work on chrome delete and make it look like a body colored TRD sport.

I have to give a big shout out to Longo Toyota. I got on a wait list with a deposit, waited four months and I got a call that an Army Green (Army green was my first choice, then Lunar Rock/Supersonic Red/White) limited was coming in. No TRD Sport Premium Pkg were coming in to any So Cal dealers (I was in contact with about 20 dealers). So I decided to get the Limited and then work on chrome delete from there. Longo Toyota was great to deal with. No mark up. MSRP. No additional add ons.

Limited Crewmax. Short Bed. Have now put in nearly 15,000 miles with no problems. I do have the wind noise on the drivers side. I love how smooth it drives and I am getting 20mpg. I am coming from a 2019 Tacoma so it is much bigger and feels bigger to drive but the bigger interior space, quiet ride, smoothness and getting about the same mpg as i did in the tacoma is a big plus. I do have to say that the turning radius sucks and that makes parking more difficult at times. I've driven my Dad's previous generation Tundra and i don't remember the turning radius being as bad? Anyways, I have enjoyed this my Tundra since I got it

But here is my chrome delete photos and part numbers.

    BeforeSideShot.jpg

Lots of chrome to get rid of on this stock Limited.

    FrontBefore.jpg

First up was the front of truck. I got quotes from local body shops with me taking off the parts and dropping them off and the prices were pretty high in my opinion. So i ended up ordering the oem parts painted straight from Sparks Parts. I was happy with the quality of the parts and paint job.

    FrontAfter.jpg

Total for order including taxes and shipping was $827 from Sparks Parts for the three grill surround. The only negative was that it did take about three months to receive the order. The Pro Grill i got from OemPartsToYou for $195 total.

    RearBeforeChrome.jpg

I also added the blank Tundra inserts to the tailgate.

    RearAfterBlack.jpg

Changing out the tailgate handle was very easy. I got the handle for $35. I went with the plain black bumper arms for $59 each side. Installation was a little more difficult for those arms because you have to push from underneath the truck but once you figure out what do it, it's goes by fast.

    HandlesPainting.jpg

One thing i thought was too expensive and i did not want to do, was the door handles. The painted parts from spark parts were too expensive in my opinion and the process of taking apart the door just seemed too much for me. So what i ended up doing was ordering some black overlays from ebay and i spray painted them myself.

    HandlesStickOn.jpg

I bought the black overlays for around $30 from ebay. I ordered Army Green color coded spray paint from ERA Paints on Amazon along with cans of 2k clear gloss and painted them. I think they turned out pretty well. Then those overlays just stick on with the included 3m tape over the chrome handles. Very happy with the end result. Spent about $100 total between overlays and paint and didn't have to take apart the doors.

    WheelsPaint.jpg

So the nice thing about getting the limited is that it came with 20" wheels that are essentially the same as the ones that come with the sport. The only difference is the finish/color. So i got primer, duplicolor black paint and cans of 2k clear gloss. The TRD Center Caps were $26 each. No one could get me a black lug nut part number for the 2022 tundra but a previous official parts vendor on this forum said that the 2021 black lug nuts would work. Those come in packs of five so i ordered five sets ($13) each and at the end was left over with one extra lug nut.

    BlackTrim.jpg

The last thing I ordered and switched out was the chrome trim. The gloss black trim was too expensive so i went with matte black trim. Installation for both sides took less than an hour. Not too difficult. Total for all six black trim pieces was $302 with taxes.

    After.jpg

And here's the final result for now. Full chrome delete. Looks much better in my opinion. I'm overall very happy with the truck. One last thing is the fender flares, the quote i got from local body shops was too expensive in my opinion. I will probably order pre-painted if that becomes an option from sparks parts or any other dealer parts store. I might also consider getting the matte black plastic ones that come on the trd off road version.

If anyone wants to buy any of the chrome pieces, let me know, I have everything. The window trim, the tailgate handle, rear bumper arms and grill surround. Would preferably sell to someone local here in Southern California to avoid shipping.

One more option that i wish was available on the Limited trim was the oem power running boards and bed step. It sounds like you can't event order the parts by themselves and install because of missing control wiring harness or something like that. I will likely be looking at aftermarket power running boards. I will likely be selling by oem aluminum black running boards that i have on now so if someone wants to make me an offer, i will sell those as well. Has anyone here bought and installed the new Go Rhino E Running Boards??

Here's a full list of parts. The grill surround painted parts were from Sparks Parts. Everything else was from Oempartstoyou or Longo Toyota Parts. If you are in So Cal, i found that oempartstoyo (Toyota of San Bernardino) has lower prices on most parts compared to other dealers and it might be worth a drive to pick up the parts in person given the lower prices and you save on shipping. I had a list of about 15 dealers parts departments and compared prices. oempartstoyou and longo toyota parts had better prices compared to others.

Thanks to all other forum members that have posted parts numbers and youtube videos for installation instructions. It was very difficult at the beginning when the tundra was released to get part numbers and get organized.

Great job, that's a fantastic looking truck!

Toyota should make them all look like that, not just the rare TRD Sport offering! The chrome and other weird color combinations are awful on the new Gen 3. We can only hope that they read these threads.

Looks great. I agree, longo is great. I picked up a 23 trd sport back in November. I also wanted 14” screen and softex, couldn’t find any so I settle on just base sport in lunar rock. I ended up changing cloth seats to Katzkin. I’ll leave the 8” head unit alone.

Thanks for all the detail. I'd like to copy what you did to the door handle covers. I also bought my set on Ebay. I was going to leave them black but after seeing your paint job I'd like to go this route as well.

Would you share the Army Green color code from ERA Paint?...and how did you get a hold of them?

I have the black bumper arms incoming today. I ordered the TRD Pro Digicam version though instead of the standard, matte black that you used. At the time I thought the digicam would look awesome! Now, I'm not so sure. I checked out that pattern in detail, it looks like dinosaurs on their side lol. My truck is green (not red, just pulled this image from the web). Not sure if I'll use the TRD Pro version or return it for the matte black. If anyone has swapped chrome for the TRD Pro version I'd love to see your pics thanks! Also swapping the black tail gate handle. Thanks again for all the part numbers in one place!

Still amazing to me in 2022 Toyota refuses to support custom orders from a plant in TX. This board is full of people expending huge amounts of effort to find a truck the semi like, settling for one they don't really, and dollars and time trying to make what they got what they want. Just ridiculous that Toyo as the largest car company in the world it married to their colonial allocation and regional distributor model for vehicles that never touch a boat. That model will be an epic fail in the upcoming EV revolution when custom orders are more the rule than exception.

very nice looking truck! I appreciate the detail in your post. I have the same truck (almost) but have yet to do the window trim and bumper arms. I have the tailgate handle but just haven't installed it yet.

I agree, I think toyota should make all sr5's, limiteds and platinums body colored everything, including the fender flares. Keep some chrome/satin finishes for 1794/capstone. I don't understand why toyota would make all these limited satin mustache with gray painted flares with chrome window trim and chrome rear bumper. Makes no sense and i think if they did a poll of their Tundra buyers, i do think they would agree on all body color finishes.

I agree, it's ridiculous that for this expensive of a truck, a customer can't get what they want and we have to settle or compromise with other trims/models. This allocation system is brutal. Especially on a set back in production with covid. I would have had no problem waiting a longer time (months/year) if it meant i could order a truck exactly how i want it from Toyota.

I got my army green spray paint via Amazon. The seller is ERA Paints and they have a listing for 6V7 Army Green Toyota. In addition, i bought cans of Spray Max 2k High Gloss Finish Clear. The 2k clear is the key to the job coming out glossy and with a factory like finish.

I just scuffed up the black ebay handles with a scuff pad to prep them for paint. I did not use primer. I did use primer when i painted my wheels.

I considered getting the digital camo back bumper and fender flares as well. I might still do it in the future. For now, I'm fine with the matte black bumper arms.

Looks great. Considering the same for my front end. Did you pull the pieces yourself or have a dealer/shop install? If so, general price for labor?

Couple questions regarding the door handle covers
    • How secure are the door handle covers?
    • Are they attached using double sided tape?
    • Do they cover the entire handle, or just the chrome piece?

Do you have a link to where you purchased them?

I did it myself. Wasn't too difficult, It just took time. Probably took me 3-4hours going at a nice slow pace being careful. Only needed an extra set of hands when removing the entire front end and then when re-installing it. I followed two youtube videos below to help with the installation.

They seem very secure. Have had no problems thus far.
They are attached with double sided tape that is already attached to the handles, you just have to peel to reveal sticky tape prior to attaching.
They cover just the chrome piece, you can see in the close up picture i showed that the black part of the original handle still shows through the top (which i like). That means that the original lock/unlock ridges on the front door are still exposed and are not covered by these handle overlays.

I'm not sure if i can post an ebay link here but the seller i got them from was "autoclub4u" and listing name was "For 2022-2023 Toyota Tundra Bright Black Car Door Outside Handles Cover Trim".

    hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, it looked like it just covered the chrome piece. Did they come in piano black or did they have a matte finish? Any reason you didn't go down this route for the tailgate handle as well? I've seen them on ebay too

Mines were gloss black so i just scuffed them up prior to painting. For the tailgate handle i liked the look of the black oem part from toyota so that's why i went that route.

You guys might want to consider a quick shot of adhesion promoter on those ebay handle overlays (and any other plastic DIY work) before color-coating. It's basically a sprayable mild acid prep to assure great adhesion over the long haul. It's available in spray bombs and it isn't expensive.

Nice job on the chrome delete. That 2K clear stuff is so awesome. I used it for my paint match as well.
