I am looking to install a backup camera in my 2010 tundra which I have an aftermarket head unit installed that I want to use as the display.

I have read a few threads and seen that there is a plug under the rear of my truck for an oem backup camera I’m just confused on if I can use this plug and display the backup camera through my aftermarket head unit?

what are my options? (I was looking at purchasing one of the tailgate handles with a camera and swapping it with my camera-less one)

    Thank you!

This is what I used: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DCRS89M?ie=UTF8

Personally, I didn't want to mess with the factory harness (if I even had one). Installing this camera was simple. The tailgate is easy to get open and swap out. The wiring takes a little more effort. You can tap into the reverse bulb for power/ground and then you will have to run the signal cable up to the back of the head unit.

Depending on how your head unit is configured you may have to tap into the reverse bulb to tell the unit to switch to the camera feed.

I would call it 2 hour project from start to finish.

Thanks for the information, I may just end up doing it this way. How is the quality of the camera?

Camera quality is very good I think. As good or better as a lot of factory cameras in older cars. It is not HD but its more than enough. All of cameras that use this component-type connection are going to be of similar quality.

sweet! That works for me. I was also going to ask how does the replacement latch hold up? I e seen some reviews of it breaking or having issues opening the tail gate.

    thanks!

Going on for about a year now. I kept the old one for a few months just in case but I've tossed it now. Quality is fine.

YouTube link. It’s a way to wire in a camera without a head unit. It uses the flip down sunglass holder. If u use it like I do I opted for the head unit.

otherwise on my old 08 I bought a rear back up camera with the bracket and tapped into pre existing wiring by spare tire.

there’s an elaborate install with tailgate handle and hole saw if you want it to look OEM. I feel like there’s more diy on Tundratalk.net so google rear back up install Tundratalk and you’ll see a bunch. I feel like this site really took off during the 2.5 gens 2014 and up. Tundratalk.net has more 07-13 stuff

I appreciate the information. I have no interest in the backup camera through the sunglasses holder thing. I want the backup camera to go through my new head unit. I will probably just skip all the hassle and run wire myself with some zip ties. I will also check out tundratalk thanks!
