I don't go off road like that, but just want to put whatever was supposed to there, there.

I can't find that "steel plate" description on any other websites so that is puzzling. I know on my 2013 SR-5 it didn't have a skid plate at all, and on my 2017 SR-5 w/ offroad package it has a piece of plastic covering the tank.

No skid is required. Most trucks never came with a skid. If you are only off roading on the occasional fire road, I wouldn’t buy it. The factory skids are all just plastic.

Well, if that piece of plastic cost that much I'll have to get a used one. Maybe it's a typo.

I'm in North Carolina and the DOT salt the roads every now and then for our occasional snow. If it's plastic, that's fine. I guess I'll stop by the dealership and ask.

Thank you for the write up. I nearly went with the Transfer Flow 46gal. I’ll need to find out if this will fit my ‘21 SR5. Even if it doesn’t it was a really interesting read.
Ever thought of becoming a tech manual writer!

I did a search and found that out but it’s always helpful to get confirmation as well. Thank you.
I got that the in-cab gas gauge works fine with this 38 gal tank. There was a question on the DTE/MPG calculators working fine, too. Do these components learn and register and then work as they should as well?

Nope. Lol mine will “ learn” after you unplug ur battery and then it goes back to the old so I know I get 492 miles but after a few cycles it says 293 full tank. But now that I’m in Texas I maybe doing a bigger fuel cell and see if I can put this 38 in my wife’s sequoia

I’m going to get ahold of my Toyota dealership and find out if they can re-program the ECM to accept the OEM 38 gallon tank. My CDO (OCD for the unafflicted) wont allow for the difference!

Just returned from the dealership. The service guy got ahold of his master tech as I was standing there. The long and short of it is this…I must use/buy the fuel pump that is designed for the 38gal tank. Re-using the 26gal tanks fuel pump will work to pump fuel but isn’t compatible with the various fuel sensors. That’s what he said.
If anyone can dispute this please do so. I always like to get confirmation on stuff like this.
One last thing. My dealership will not install it for me since drilling the holes for the added strap is considered a “modification” but it will not void the factory 3/36 if I was still under the 3/36 (?)

Yes I have all 38 gallon stuff and it still shows as the smaller one. Fake news

Figures. Looks like jerry cans for the long haul.

I called the service guy just now and got the company line, “As long as you got the right parts and everything is installed properly it will work”.

Im gonna throw a Hail Mary and drive to the other Toyota dealership and talk to directly to their service manger.

Just left dealership #2. Spoke to the manager and two techs. It could be the ECM which cannot be accessed by anyone ooooor, if the fuel pump was not handled like live ordnance when installed it could be reading wrong. I’m going with door number one. It’s the factory ECM.

If I recall correctly. The holes are already in your frame. And the stuff that is required to be moved on older gens is already moved (brake lines, etc.) I didn't end up going through with it, sold the parts to another member, and ultimately got my 38 gallon tank when I got a 2017!

Don't know. I never installed it, that was on my 2013 DC. I got the tank dropped down and looked at all the extra modifications and when it got to modifying the parking brake I decided to cut my losses and sell the stuff. I didn't want to hack the tank on the truck. But had I had a 2+/3rd whatever gen. where the holes where already on the frame I would have installed it, that 26 gallon tank was terrible when towing.
The 2017 CM came with the 38 gallon tank from the factory. The 13' I had didn't have the DTE stuff so I didn't care if that worked, and from what I remember the actual fuel gauge still reads the same as the dimensions (in relation to fuel measurement) don't change on the tank it is just longer.

Also I really wanted the TF 46 gallon tank, but at that time they weren't making them due to an emissions issue. Which they have since resolved.

    Sorry, I misunderstood you.
Ditto on towing with the 26. Makes me miss my 3/4Ton with 36 gallon tank. MPG’s aren’t all that different either.
I’ll make do with the two 5 gallon gas cans I already have. No biggie.

Last question. Does the fuel gauge needle register the correct amount of fuel in the tank with the 38gal tank? I can live with the erroneous DTE number.

Not really. I’ll be at e on my tank and have tons of fuel left. My first half goes like there is a hole then the last half seems normal
