@Diablo169 ya run the safety keeper on yours?

@Mr.bee keeps everything clean like you mentioned. Plus makes oil changes a tool less deal.

somebody sent me a video of the solo cup truck for oil filters not to spill any while removing them

I've got one, haven't installed, but have experience with them elsewhere. I've seen complaints of slow drain on some vehicles, but opening the top-end (oil fill) can help.

You still make a mess when replacing the filter, and still need to be able to get to the filter, so still a skid plate to deal with unless you're a contortionist or lucky.

If you don't have 4WD and/or no skid plate, height/clearance may be an issue to think about, they stick out about twice as far as a standard drain plug.

I'm actually curious to hear more about this trick. Do you need the skid plate off to manage it?

Oil change intervals for me are 5k and that works out to be about every 12 months, so I pull the shield and do a old fashioned oil change. While under the truck I take a light and give the underside a good look for any problems. Once I saw an exhaust manifold nut that was loose and had I not been doing an inspection, I would have lost the nut and developed an exhaust leak and maybe blow out a piece of the gasket. There's value in doing things right and not always looking for the easiest way. But I am a believer in working smarter not harder. Just my opinion.

I really like my Fumoto valve. The only trick is that you have to get the oil warm first. It took over an hour to drain the only time I changed the oil cold.

I run a piece of rubber hose up to the valve and then down to an empty milk jug.

IMO, the best thing about the valve and why I bought a Fumoto, is it provides insurance that the nut welded inside the pan isn't going to be breaking off during a change on my truck. The old, ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure logic.

I may not have thought this all the way out:bananadead:. It’s gonna be a minute before I’m due an oil and get to try it. I wasn’t thinking about how steep the cup would be turned on our filters though. Ours maybe to sideways for this trick

It might work, maybe with a bigger solo cup to get further up the canister neck. I just use news paper or junk mail to make a valley and let it drip into my catch pan.

Man just recycle some cardboard when you change your filter and sing Kumbaya. No mess. Then fill that solo cup with some liquor and celebrate your contribution to greater Whirled Peas.

This is why I wanted more details.

Right now, I'm just setting my catch-basin jug under the low side of the filter housing; it works fine. But I'd love something innovative.

I'm in the process of clearing out my crankcase, so short OC cycles. I've had my skid plate off as a result. But if I had it on, I'd wish for an easy filter removal option.

I haven't tried it yet but I'm due for an oil change soon - with the Skid Row front skid plate it appears there's enough room to get the filter off without dropping the skid, and I should still be able to channel the oil still with cardboard.

I just barely crack the filter loose, until oil just starts to dribble out. If done correctly, the small stream will mostly miss the frame and when it stops i stuff a rag in the area and spin the filter all the way off with little to mop up. That's with shield off though. I don't know if it would work with the shield in place. Never tried it.

I have an 06 2WD. I double up some walmart bags. Place them on the top of the skid plate under the oil filter. Remove the oil filter from the top reaching down into the engine compartment. The oil drops and filter drop down into the walmart bags on the skid plate. Remove bags with messy oil and filter and toss it in the trash.

For the last couple years i've been filtering my used oils, and about half goes to grandpa, and half gets burned. The sludge and metalflake i catch has been collecting in a coffee can for maybe 5 years.

I like the stahlbus for my truck. I have fumotos on the other family cars. The Stahlbus just seems more robust and reliable since the truck finds itself in very remote locations

Folks with oil drain valves, how often do problems 'sneak' up on you? Do you pay attention to tire wear before their bald? Brakes? Bushings? "All of a sudden"?

just curious. You wouldnt believe how often i hear 'all of a sudden' while shopping junk.

I've used the Fumoto valves for years. Love 'em. Havent tried the cup trick yet. I've used a gallon baggie though. Same principle.
