OEM Bed Step?

So.....how many of you have the OEM bed step? How high off the ground is it when down?
Is it really worth it?

 

I have it. It's about 12" off the ground when it's down. It's worth every penny in my book. Guess it just depends how nimble you are.

 

I have one and not really a fan. By the time I bend over and pull it out/down, I could just pull myself up into the truck. If it was the auto version I would probably use it more.

 

You know you can just push it down with your foot, right? You don't have to bend over and pull it down.

 

I don't bend down, I kick it out with my foot. I believe is it's too low to the ground, 12" off the ground but 24" top of step to top of tailgate when open. Should of been designed to be a little closer to half way between ground and open tailgate. Like 18", right in the middle.

 

mine does not do that. Maybe it was installed incorrectly at the port. You have to move it out a bit before it will go down. Maybe I need to check underneath to see what they did.

 

Unlike other accessories or mods, I would say that the bedstep is a need, not a want. It works very well for me - simple - there when you need it and not when you don't. And yeah, you just push it down with you foot (not your hand silly).

 

Are you trying to "pull" it down with your foot, i.e. standing facing the front of the truck and trying to "pull" the step towards you? You need to "push" it away from you and down from the back of the step. You should be able to just push the back of the step towards the rear of the truck and it will go out and down.

Not sure what they could have done to keep it from going out correctly, it's a pretty simple armature.

Install it yourself. Easy diy.

 

My build sheet for my allocated truck even states that it's "hands free" operation. I am curious to see what the issue is.

 

Why doesn’t Toyota notch a step into the bumper ends like Chevy?

 

Because there is a sensor in the corners, I believe it is Cross Traffic Detection...

I've had my truck for six weeks now, and have been considering it. I am probably going to pass. Like many people, I live in an area where we insist on spending our tax dollars on applying corrosive materials to the roadways to deteriorate our expensive vehicles. When I consider the cost of the step, the fact that it is in a likely spot to collect the aforementioned corrosives, and the amount of times my fat old ass actually has to climb in the bed, particularly now with the cap added, I will pass. It can certainly be added any time if there is a need. I keep a 1970's Fisher snow plow hook in my trucks for retrieving out of reach things in the bed.

 

Except it’s out of stock and to the best of my knowledge has been for many months. I waited months for it to become available and it never did.

Wound up getting the OEM step for slightly cheaper from https://parts.toyota.com. Part number is PTS3034000. Search around on that site. Each dealership you click on to buy it from will have a different price. I got it for just under $290 shipped from Toyota of Topeka.

 

I used the bed step in the tailgate of my old rig all the time, I ask myself why I didn’t get this option for my Tundra

 

I have it use my foot to deploy and retract it too low . Getting up and in is fine but getting down it’s a bit of a reach to the step . I would buy again because not a better solution at this point

 

I have it and love. I use it everyday. Takes a minute to learn how to push it down (right big toe on inside corner). The paint protection film is also worth it.

 

GMC has a patent on it, so no one else can use it

 

Honestly I prefer the step over the bumper insert. When getting out of the truck it’s nice to step down onto something closer to the ground.

 

Installed mine today and love it. Makes it a lot easier getting in the bed.

 

New Ford Superdutys have corner bumper steps and one on the side. Not sure if option or standard. Saw the review on TFL

 

That may be true. But having worked with patents for many years, all I can say is "there is another way". Toyota should have found it without resorting to this stupid add on step.

My neighbor has it on their 2021 Tundra and forgot to retract it while backing down the driveway and almost tore it off because it hangs so low. That's the major reason holding me back from getting it on our 2023.

 

People do dumb stuff all the time. Wouldn’t let that stop you from getting one. I heard so much complaining about the step I was certain I didn’t want one. Truck had it as a mandatory add on and I love it. It works so much better than an insert as you can step out of the bed looking forward. If loading a dirt bike or something tall/heavy it’s actually a lot safer and better to have a full step.

 

Has anyone tried anything like this?

It's a bit extreme, maybe there is a simpler version out there.

 

Serra Toyota has it for $250 pretty much always and I got it for even less during Black Friday. Free shipping too!

 

someone else on here has a much lower profile ladder like that that mounts along the length of the tailgate and flips open- looks good and easy to use
