To my parents who already have everything, time.

my dad and step mom retired early 50’s, I go help do cow / ranch work when needed.

my mom, widowed from my step dad, I go help do yard work a few times a year.

they don’t need or want anything except time.

    So, I make time

I bought my Dad and brother Fenix flashlights. You can't have enough good flashlights and they probably wouldn't have bought them themselves.

Haha, my dad has built 2 computers and bought a Falcon NW PC a couple years ago. He prefers to play on his homemade PC though. I think he's good on the tech stuff

If that's a factory paint job, you should be able to find the paint. You may be able to find it in a rattle can.

Got my mom a cordless dyson. She has and old central vacuum system with a super heavy hose that's hard to move around even for me. The dyson only weighs a few pounds.

Not quite for parents, but with my wife’s family we’re supposed to do the “$20 gift that anyone can use” exchange. I feel like those are just about buying someone something with no real thought or meaning attached to it, and I’m not a huge fan of it.

So partly in protest, and partly from a complete lack of a better idea, this is what I wrapped up:

Should be entertaining when gifts are opened after supper tonite.

My mom's family used to do a gift exchange by drawing names. About 10 years ago, we decided we had enough crap and started donating the $50 each to charity instead.

Agree - at a point - leave the gifts for the kids and stay away from the “forced” giving around the holidays. Make charitable gifts in the name of someone to a charity of their choice.

The MIL is the worst about this - constantly goes on to wife about “such and such got someone in their family this” - it’s just like enough. She expects a gift and then will CONSTANTLY ask “did you like my gift…did you use my gift…how’s my gift working for you” - as if she is disappointed if whatever small thing she buys us isn’t life changing and to remind us we need to buy her something bigger and better.

It’s just pointless as we are both working and no kids - if we want something for ourselves - we buy it. No need to await someone to buy it for us - we make money and we enjoy the rewards of our labor. I mean we take a bottle of wine and a desert or something to get togethers with friends - but that’s the extent of our gifting aside from the nieces. A bottle of Christmas cheer is always appreciated and usually gone by end of the evening with friends.

Parents though - just a call, a visit or if you can’t at least a card. Something simple is usually best. Lot of good ideas in this thread though in useful gifts for around the house.

It’s always hard to buy for those who can buy what they want so we usually go the customized calendar route with photos of the grandkids and a coffee cup on occasion.

My parents and in laws just want to spend the time together which is good but I still want to get something each year!

Got the parents another granddaughter (coming 2023!!!), which the mom parents definitely appreciate. Both sides of the family we have the only girl, whom gets tons of extra gifts/clothes/etc. Having a monopoly there will pay good dividends. But joking aside the best gifts if you have kids is a nice printed picture (like zazzle.com for example). Parent usually don't have the tech savvy-ness to use digital pictures otherwise.
