Older adult parents are really hard to buy Christmas presents for.
They have everything they need and they won't tell you if they want something.

Perhaps some of y'all have some nice and out-of-the-box ideas for their Christmas gifts...

    TIA...

Got one for my mom and she loves it. Turned out my dad keeps taking it, so I got him his own for x-mas.
But I agree, its pretty hard finding them gifts. I normally fail at the holiday or their birthday, but I've learned when I find things during the year to just send them. My father tells me I give him the bests gifts compared to my siblings.

My 86 year old father writes checks & mails them to his 6 kids. We go & buy gift cards & mail them all back to him. He buys a lot of guns & ammunition at Cabelas.

My parents still give us lists so they're not too tough, though my dad's list usually sucks.

https://www.skylightframe.com/ For mom, a digital picture frame that has its own email address. I gave the address to the rest of the family, my brother and I, the grandkids, etc and everyone can email pictures to that email that will automatically go into the loop and be shown on the frame. I started before Christmas, added a bunch of pics and sent out the email address to the rest so it'll be rolling pictures from the minute she plugs it in.

Used to always give their vehicles a full once a year service, all the basic fluids and stuff, plus belts, hoses, tires, bearings, brakes, gaskets, pumps, etc. Just whatever would give them and me both peace of mind that they could go anywhere without any hesitation. Topped it off with AAA membership too.
Never had to rescue or worry much about them.

Honestly, I don't know. Dad passed in 2019, so I don't buy him anything.

Mom...she's a different story. Long story short - nothing I buy for her is sufficient. If I DO buy anything, she'll find fault with it. We bought her an electric blanket last year and we were just given it back. The reason?

"Because I'm afraid the cat will be electrocuted."

My gut feeling is that unless it's either purchased or suggested by my sister (the spitting image of my mom, except my sister is rational), it'll get refused/criticized, because I remind mom of dad. :notsure: So we just ask my sister what Mom has mentioned, then buy it and see what the remark is. Eventually it'll get to the point where I have to tell her that we'll just buy her returnable gift certificates in the future because nothing satisfies her.

I was raised east coast of Canada, my Mother is still there (Dad passed 2019). For over a decade have sent a nice table flower arrangement through CanadaFlowers, send about 12 days ahead. Mom still enjoys that, especially for having guests. On the years I have not been back, also something simple from Amazon, gift wrapped for Xmas morning.

My mom likes wall art, anything dio de los muertos. This year it’s a blanket with pictures of the family, mostly because everyone has passed. We’ve gotten her stereos, kitchen stuff, even a Netflix subscription. It’s always different, she always lets us know what she needs.

For mom, i've got a huge wood picture frame, i'll have to get her and dad to pose with polo and have it printed. She might even want to paint over it so it looks like a portrait. Shes creative like that.

Can’t go wrong with pictures or sentimental stuff.

Sometimes just showing up to spend a few hours is enough really. Take them out if they don’t get out much - to eat, church or just to visit relatives.

Holidays without them are rough - especially when you lost one during the holidays. The know it was rough on my mom after my dad passed - so I tried to make sure I was there for her and visited as much as I could around Christmas.

I know what you mean though about being “hard to buy for” - mom I wound up buying the most damn expensive appliances that probably got used 1x a year - dad - just another fancy knife he tossed into a shoe box with the hundred off Pakistani and China made junk. Kept telling him “use them” it’s what their made for” and kept getting “I’m afraid I’ll lose it” as an excuse for not carrying a pocket knife worth more than $5. Still care more about a few of those cheap pocket knives far more than most of my others.

It’s funny - we were never big as a family celebrating Christmas. Thanksgiving was “butchering weekend” growing up and then deer season the following Monday. Christmas though was mainly a big party Christmas Eve and a couple of hungover adults being awakened really early by kid’s Christmas Day.

    Just an update...
My parents are in their mid 80s, one reason it's so hard to buy for them.
My Dad is a borderline hoarder, I try to get him stuff he will use and not put in a stack somewhere.
Like @Shamrock92 stated he won't use some stuff because he doesn't want to lose it.
I say 'if you lose it, I'll buy you another one'.

    So what I got Dad:
When we took dinner over for Thanksgiving his cooking thermometer was missing digits.
I got him another one, big digits and comes on when you open it..
Amazon.com: ThermoPro TP19 Waterproof Digital Meat Thermometer for Grilling with Ambidextrous Backlit & Thermocouple Instant Read Thermometer Kitchen Cooking Food Thermometer for Candy Water Oil BBQ Grill Smoker : Everything Else

Also a beef jerky sampler from People's Choice Beef Jerky: Real Jerky Since 1929 (peopleschoicebeefjerky.com)
    Bought myself some more too.

I'm also going to get him a pair of Hey Dude casual shoes.
He probably hasn't had a pair of new shoes in forever.
Official Website of HEYDUDE shoes | Lightweight & Comfortable Shoes (heydudeshoesusa.com)

Mom just wants to be taken out for dinner.
Although I'm also considering the Skylight | Skylight Frame @rocsteady mentioned.
Going to ask my sisters if they would contribute pics to it..

I'm also going to offer to do more stuff around their house next year.
    Cleaning windows, yard work, etc...

    Y'all keep suggestions coming.
I know it isn't just my parents that are hard to buy for.

    Thanks everyone for posting..

Should add - DO NOT buy anything technology unless you are prepared to be the one spending the next 3 months teaching them how to use it and prepared for both the inevitable complaints of how difficult it is and the random ass calls when something doesn’t work like it’s supposed to.

Alexa Echo might be the exception to that rule - just be prepared to deal with parents who think they can scream commands at everything going forward and it does what they want it to.

This year was easy, though a bit expensive. My mom's wood burning stove (used for 95% of her heat all winter) cracked after over 40 years of heavy use. I found what looked like the same one she had and bought it for her.

Usually we go by lists, and my mom always wants books. She reads about 3 books a week and she's almost 80 y/o.
