What are the benefits of single stage paint? Cheaper? No clear coat peel?

I'm pretty sure my truck has a clear coat on it and I know it's never been repainted. Most of my pinstripes are in the clear coat. The back of the fuel door doesn't have the same finish as the rest of the truck.

    Yes, and yes. And more.

It's a tradeoff: Upsides are, if it was mixed properly at the factory, it's practically fool-proof, no risk of failure. It's super cost-effective on the assembly line, because it's a single-step process, just spray it on. Touch ups are easy for the end user. Downsides are, it requires extra end user input by way of waxing/sealing, else the paint chalks, and can chalk to the point you're at base metal if you let it. If you don't take care of it, paint correction is a bitch. You also can't get most of the fancy finishes/effects you can achieve with a two-stage paint (pearls, candies, etc.)

You think it's never been repainted, at least. Trucks get damaged in transit sometimes, and even on the lot before 1st sale. Most dealerships have a spray booth.

Now, I'm not saying you're wrong. Maybe it did come from the factory with a clearcoat. But normally the solid, non-metallic colors aren't, like @RUSTYNUTS' black truck.

Truth is, it could even be factory-dependent. Maybe one factory was two-stage on black, and another was single stage. Were both of your trucks from the same factory?

Non-metallic white, and non-metallic red though, the white is still single stage today. The red was single-stage at least through the 80s/90s on Toyota's cars. Black, there are no shortage of single stage black Toyotas, assuming there's no metal flake.

I would prefer mine did not have clear coat. When you have a 20yr old truck that lived in the sun, you start to see the clear coat fail and it looks like shit. Single stage is cheaper cost wise for the factory or if you are getting one painted. I think mine has been touched up and then maybe sprayed with clear? I can tell on a couple of spots it's been worked on, but no way the entire truck was re painted. No signs of that. It's a mystery. What throws me is I think most professional shops would advise against clearing a truck like mine without a full repaint.

I caught something bad. I developed an itchy throat and a fever last night. Had to call in today. I'm very dizzy when I stand up. My fever broke already, but we'll see what happens when the acetaminophen wears off.

But this is also assuming most people want to pay professional shop pricing. Let's be real: Most people want to save coin, and will go to Maaco and have them prep and clear over the existing paint. And the Maaco sprayer is just doing whatever the boss says, and if that's to scuff and clear over the dull paint on a truck, guess what he's doing?

And then there's the ignorance piece. I went to a detail shop when I was feeling too lazy to correct my own paint. Dude couldn't believe my paint was single stage. He's been in business decades in ATL working on all cars known to man, is highly touted in the classic car/hot rod and luxury car industry. He thought the clear totally failed until I showed him a small spot I took some compound to. Industry professional. Completely ignorant of what paints are used on what. He had a T4R and a GX sitting in the bay, so he's no stranger to the brand!! If this guy doesn't have it figured out, I'm guessing your average person, like any of us, don't know, and a Maaco sprayer won't either.

PS - that guy's ignorance at the detail shop, and desire to charge me something stupid like $1,200 to buff out and seal my paint was what inspired me to do my own. I know how to do it, I also know it's a shitload of work to do the right way and thus didn't want to do it!! :D

    Couple things to point out (pro and con) w/ single-stage that I've experienced with this truck;
    pro-
The paint (as @shifty` stated-when properly maintained by routine waxing) seems to be high quality. I say this as I recently tested it's pliability by wrapping some of my bedside around a parking lot pole. In my attempt to repair the damage, while it is still wrinkled and far from perfect, I did get the massive dent popped out and close to where it was, and didn't lose any paint. There is a nasty scratch where the top corner of the pole dug in, but other than that, it all held strong. I've seen other vehicles suffering similar injuries, usually resulting in some paint loss around the creases at least.
    con-
While the paint is strong pliability-wise, it it vulnerable to impact chipping. My hood, as well as both front fenders, are peppered with tiny rock chips likely from high speed freeway driving. It being a single-stage paint, means any and every chip exposes the underlying raw sheet metal. The contrast from black paint to raw metal shows the chips well and looks horrible. Obviously waxing is not going to help, and the paint is thick enough that 'touch-up painting' won't cut it. The chips would need to be filled and a repaint on the entire hood and fenders to make them go away. Also, I would expect the chipped spots to rust as it's raw steel, but they don't. Not sure why that is but I'll take it.

Definitely dealing with the chips. But in my case, the plastics (mirror backs, bumper skin, grille, nerf steps) seem to be two-stage/clearcoated. They're chipping also. So I'm confused how/why it is, my observation is same as yours.

But I'll also say, PO had a bug & rock deflector on the hood of my truck. When I took it off, some paint came with it. I'm not sure it's bare steel under, maybe a grey primer coat is behind? Or a zinc coating on the steel. I couldn't tell. But I was able to take a touch-up jar and brush and gradually fill in the chips, observing re-coat window. I never shaved them down after, it passed the 5ft test, I just gave them 6-10 months to harden, then polished them down a little bit.

Here in SC, we are seeing a lot of Flu A, RSV, Rhinoenterovirus, and SARS-CoV2. Without a molecular test you not likely know what pathogen.

Leak must have been from heat. Or the diff is empty...50 miles to take polo to the vet and back, and not a drop. Gonna wait for a houston trip to put in the blue devil and top off the fluid.

He doesnt fit in the front seat of the truck anymore. He stands in the back and leans on the center console. Need to come up with a way i can remove my back door windows, so he can feel the breeze.

and i dont have to worry about him being stolen by a 120lb girl. When the vet came and got him, she was tugging, and he wasnt budging. When she brought him back to me, and he made her run, she didnt have a chance in the world of stopping him.

Do you ever have passengers other than him? Remove the passenger seat!
I guess that’s nice that Django won’t get much bigger; he fits perfect in the rear passenger seat removed area of the DC. I still need to refine his spot and make usable/tactical storage underneath.
