I build a lot of closets. In this situation, I'd just install a vertical panel. Then you can hang the short shelves on it as if it's a wall, and the shelf layout can be different on the two sides. If you need a couple shelves full length, then just stop the vertical panel under the lowest full length shelf, if that makes sense. If you're worried about the weight, you can always double the vertical panel. Usually melamine, because you don't need to paint it and easy to clean.

Yup, that's it. Anything else is way out of my league. I can run wire, terminate it, build the rack and set the equipment, but I can't do any of the other stuff. I'm but a simple man.

 

My "van" had to go in the shop for the trans, PW, and the brakes are starting to squeal. 13k miles. Can't say I'm not liking my replacement for now...

 

No matter how many times I drive something like that, I cannot get used to the little round knob shift selector in the Daimler vehicles.

I started on the other side of the panel - doing the other stuff, starting on the configuration, then racking, then learned the LV side of things when I finally got tired of paying out the nose subbing out other people to do the work.

There are definitely guys I've met along the way I'd pay in a heartbeat to do the work, because what they do is beyond "work", it's ART. They have a passion for their job and will do it better than I ever could. But I can count on less than 10 fingers how many times I've found that in the last couple decades ... but those guys never stick around for long, are flaky as hell with their scheduling, or are booked to the hilt with work.

I never put up pics of the relay cabinet I got to wire up the other day, did I? I didn't get to finish it, but spent a week just getting this far. It starts as a blank shell, we put all the equipment in, then wire it. This one is for a 230kv breaker in a substation.

 

Now that's what I'm talking about.

I ended up buying a bunch of 1x3x96 top-grade pine, a couple 1.5x1.5x96 for support verticals, and 24x48 laminated pine for the shelves. I'd prefer using melamine, 20" deep, but I can only get it in 15.75" depth here. And realize in hindsight I probably should've just gotten 1x2x96 for the verticals, then narrow crown'd it to the face of the pine shelves. Maybe I'll head back up and swap out. I'd prefer oak, but FFS, I would've been paying $500 out the door. Pine set me back $300. Ouch.

I'm just going to run the 1x3 for my horizontal lips. Top 2-3 shelf lips will run the full 74" width, and dog-leg everything up the short wall to provide a full "L" of horizontal supports. For now, it'll be five 24x48 pine shelves the whole way up on , and I'd planned to anchor the vacant corner with the 1.5x but like I said, I think I'll narrow crown a 1x2 against the shelf edges, then cut additional 1x2 to fill in between shelf boards, adding a lip, basically creating a notched 1.5x. I don't have a table saw, so notching my existing 1.5x would be a pain in the ass.

Like this, where the brown is the 1x3 horizontals, the red is the 1.5x or 1x2 vertical support, and the manila colored crap is the 24" deep 4ft shelves.

with a slightly leaking axle seal, think i can get it to seal if i drive around to get everything warm, then opened the fill plug and stuffed a shop vac in? Sure, the damage might already be done, it's been a while since it got the new axle, but it started leaking between ?june-july? And dec. Maybe it got hot and just pushed out since the vent is probably plugged.

Its been so hard to not heckle the lane assist/adaptive cruise thread. I've written hilarious responses a dozen times, but didnt want the whiny 3rd gen guy to get me banned.

 

is the dryer or whatever the circled doohickey on the high pressure side? I need to make a new strap bracket and move it about 1/2" closer to the consenser and up a hair for clearance. Might use txagg's torch if needed for a smooth bend. Would heating this increase the pressure enough to hurt things? Or should this sort of thing be done without any pressure? I can get the appropriate jaws for my brake line bender. But 20 year old aluminum is different.

Leave it off. Yeah a bunch of little bends would be best and probably less stress on the pipe vs one big bend
