First of all this is a great forum. Lots of information for guys/gals looking to get into Tundras.

We’ve been in the market for a truck for awhile and finally pulled the trigger on a local 2001 SR5 AC. Vehicle is 2wd non LSD, pretty basic but with the future addition of an eaton/detroit truetrac, it’ll be more than capable for our use. Mileage is 103k and had excellent records, the owner changed the oil by date and not mileage lol (approx 2,300 miles on the oil changes for several years). It's had a water pump replacement, all fluids changed, plugs, and dayco timing belt installed. I did look over the lbj’s/ubj’s and they are MOOGs with approx 2,300 miles on them. I’m contemplating replacing lowers with OEMs but may put 10k on them before I do so.

We took the truck to a local Toyota dealer and dropped the spare tire and checked the frame for rust. So far just surface rust on the bottom of the frame, tow hitch, and rear axle as it was a northern MO truck, just barely on that salty line. We believe it was garage kept as the clear coat and plastics are immaculate, the clear coat/paint is basically 100%. Truck now resides in NE Oklahoma, no salt here. We're a Toyota/Lexus family and currently our families cars include a 12 Corolla, 13 RX350, 15 RX350, 17 RX 350, 17 CT200H, 17 GX460 and 17 RX350.

My plans for the truck are:

-POR-15 any surface rust and likely just coat the frame. I'll document before and after if we ever decide to sell it since people are wary of coated frames.
    -install Eaton detroit truetrac

Use the semi-gloss black if you're concerned about the coated frame. It blends perfectly with the matte black appearance of the original frame.

Welcome! Yeah, the metallic green and metallic red often see clearcoat fail if parked out in full sun regularly.

RE: MOOG lbj ... gotta be careful with non-OEM balljoints. Lots of pics of people's front wheels laying on the ground. And if you happened to replace the lca, know that MOOG had a big recall on them. MOOG isn't what they used to be.

If you search this forum for balljointfail you'll see a variety examples of what non-OEM balljoint users often end up with. A few choice samples:

Thanks for the heads up! I'll probably go ahead and get some factory ones ordered sooner rather than later.

Nice find! Is that a trailblazer SS, or just the grass making it look low?

lol good spotting, regular TB. It's got 242k on it and the 4L60E trans finally went out. It'll eventually go for a transmission rebuild, the stock motor is still in good shape. If the motor went out I'd probably look at swapping an LS into it.

I'm shocked the 4l60e lasted into the 200s, you're usually lucky to get 140k out of them. Y'all must baby that thing.

We did basic maintenance, synthetic oil every 5k and transmission fluid changes every 60k. We did tow occasionally with it, only small boats and trailers.

Funny enough I changed the transmission fluid the last time and 50-100 miles later the transmission started slipping and then the fluid pump went out. Probably should have left the old fluid in there as I believe the last change of Dexron III to IV may have contributed to the failure. I should probably say "accelerated" as it was probably worn out already.
