I have a 2022 DC Limited but without the TRD off road package, so no diff locker. The question is, does my truck have any kind of limited slip capability?

I know my 2011 SR5 TRD OR did not have a "real" limited slip differential but would use wheel brakes to give some limited slip capability when stuck. Just wondering if the 2022 has similar. From the owners manual, it seems like it has nothing but wide open front and rear differentials, unless vehicle stability controls are doing the same thing...

    Thanks,

    Here. There. Everywhere.
    Vehicle:
2021 SR5 TRD Off Road - Cavalry Blue
    Bilstein 5100s
It should have ATRAC, which is Toyota's version of a LSD. It uses the brakes to control slippage and apply power to individual wheels.

Does the 3rd gen use the same 10.5” rear/axle splines as the 07-21, or is it different? If it’s the same, a great aftermarket option would be the powertrax LSD. I have one in my 2017 and I am loving it. It uses helical gears so there is no clutches to wear out. It’s always working automatically in 2hi/4hi/4lo and works great. The auto lsd never really worked that great IMO. Might be something to check into, even if they don’t make one for it yet I'm sure they will in the future.

No mention of A-TRAC in the owners manual, just TRAC which is defined as:

"Helps to maintain drive power and prevent the drive wheels from spinning when starting the vehicle or accelerating on slippery roads"

    It goes on to say:

■Disabling the TRAC system If the vehicle gets stuck in mud, dirt or snow, the TRAC system may reduce power from the engine to the wheels. Pressing to turn the system off may make it easier for you to rock the vehicle in order to free it. To turn the TRAC system off, quickly press and release . “Traction Control Turned OFF” is displayed in the multi-information display. Press again to turn the system back on.

Would this be the same thing as A-TRAC, which I do remember having on my 2011?

    Thanks

I found this chart on an old post on Tacoma World:

    upload_2022-12-13_16-1-43.jpg

This is what I was looking for in my 2022 Tundra manual but there is no good explanation and no description on TRAC or A-TRAC modes in 4H or 4L and whether or not it chops power when wheel slip occurs.

@dashmer Some of the new Tundras have ALSD (Auto Limited Slip) feature. In the manual it explains that the brakes are used similar to TRAC system you mentioned. It also said “if equipped”. What I don’t know is which Tundra trim levels and configurations 2wd or 4wd have the feature and when does it engage. Anyone else know more about it.

    Lots of stuff!
I haven't tried the locker in mine, but I expect it to behave like my old locker in my Samurai. Open diffs that use brakes to control slippage (like traction control) should come with a switch to turn off the feature. In the snow, I have to turn this off on the BMW to get anywhere in the snow. It is also more fun! I haven't tried this on the Tundra yet. Waiting to get some real tires and also waiting for some snow.

Off topic but I was wondering why the Tundra doesn't come with an optional front locking diff as well? That would be fun too!

I believe ALSD only comes on 2WD models, according the the owners manual.

The Tundra brochure indicates 3 options as far as the Drivetrain is concerned.
    • Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) with Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD)65
    • 4WDemand part-time 4-Wheel Drive with electronically controlled 2-speed transfer case
(high/low range) and Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD)65
    • Electronically controlled locking rear differential
So, unless you've got the locking rear, it should have the Auto LSD otherwise known as the brakes trying to control the spin.

Thanks for this. I suspect you are right, but there is nothing in the owners manual about it and it is not listed in the Toyota Canada specifications like it is on the Toyota US site. Much more detail on the US site. It is not a guarantee that Canadian trucks are equipped the same, although in this case it seems likely. Just strange it is not mentioned. I downloaded the US owners manual and it is the same as the Canadian one.

Picking mine up tomorrow, so can't help with the owner's manual...

I know my '19 Outback came with enough multi-book manuals that I still haven't gotten through all of them, and can't remember half of the confusing garbage in there...
On the other hand, my '13 wrangler came with an abbreviated manual, and I had to request the full print manual, which was quite the book when it came...
In both cases the manuals were written pretty poorly, so I wouldn't be shocked it they were wrong...

It will be interesting to see what the Toyota paperwork actually looks like, and how it reads.

Anything new on this front? Does the 3rd gen non-TRD 4x4 have limited slip differentials front and rear?

No they are both open. Toyota uses brakes to reduce spin on wheel that looses traction. Its called ALSD. TRD OR pkg has electrically controlled locking rear axle but you can only use it in 4low not 4high.

Sorry, I meant Auto LSD. The 3rd gen. owners manual states that Auto LSD is only on the 2WD models, but the brochures and other sources online notate the the 4WD also have the auto LSD.

Followup question: In what modes does the auto LSD engages (2H, 4H, 4L)? and is it front and rear like the tacoma?

I have Limited 4WD and it has engaged when I’m in 2WD. I haven’t had a situation in 4WD where it could have engaged yet so not sure if it works then also. Maybe someone else has had experience with it in snow or mud in 4WD.

Did you have to turn off traction control for it to activate like previous gen Tundra and current Tacoma?

That's what I'm seeing, but I'm curious as to when it's engaged. Is the Auto LSD working in 4H, or just 2H?

Good question. I did not turn off traction and now wonder if that is what activated and not ALSD. I guess I’m gonna need to go find a stone or dirt road and try it to see what lights up on instrument panel when break tires loose in 2WD and 4WD. :mudding:

Later: pulled my window sticker and it has same Auto Limited Slip description as Eagleye.

Traction control is what kicks in if you have not hit any buttons not AutoLSD.

In reality Auto limited slip IS NOT auto. You have to turn it on by hitting the Traction Control button once. The AutoLSD Light will illuminate on the dash. It only works in 2wd.

The system is HANDS DOWN Toyotas biggest flaw on these trucks. The system works better than nothing, I will give them that, but a true LSD in both front and rear differentials would be far more welcome.

No need to hit any buttons to take advantage of it, no awful noise when functioning, and no unnecessary brake pad wear.

Both 2wd and 4wd models are equipped with the AutoLSD. However it only functions in 2wd and only functions for the rear wheels.

I just tried this... I was in 2WD and hit traction control button once - I got a traction control off message in the central instrument cluster screen, but nothing about Auto LSD lit up. Do the wheels need to be spinning for this to show?

According to the manual the light should
Come on in the dash when you push the button.
    https://www.toyota.com/owners/resou...als.tundra.2022.digital.om0c029u.ch04se050420

Though in reading some more, maybe they did take it away from the 4wd models for the Gen3. I was under the impression it was like the 2nd gens and while it was on 4wd trucks it did not work in 4wd. But now reading the manual a little closer it says only 2wd models and not mode like it used to say.

That is baffling to me if they took it off 4wd trucks.

But in all other Toyota brochures and other sources, the 4wd includes Auto LSD. Paging a Toyota engineer....ha.
