    Here’s the skinny

I’ve been shaving my head for the last 18 years due to hair loss usually 3 times a week along with my face. I’ve got pretty sensitive skin and usually get some razor burn on my neck and even around my ears or on the back of my head.

I switched to a Rockwell safety razor 2 years ago after reading a review in on here by another member. It was an improvement, but not a full problem solver. That razor broke last week and I’m now trying to reinvent/figure out how to do a better job of shaving/eliminate the razor burn which is uncomfortable but also pretty unsightly in my line of work.

What do you recommend for someone with sensitive skin: safety razor brands, blades, pre shave oil, shave cream, post shave treatment, and any other tips and advice.

I’ve watched videos of guys doing the triple shave, I truly can’t imagine what my face would feel like and look after that. But I’d love to be able to do it someday.

    Thanks.

Been shaving my head for 25 years; been through every blade imaginable and have sensitive skin. I found that using the Gillette fusion pro (specifically the pro glide shield - do NOT buy the razors on Amazon as they’re definitely knockoffs) and van der Hagen shave soap or butter with a brush applicator and then showering after shaving works great for me. Very few razor bumps / nicks these days.

I've been shaving my head (probably twice a week) for about 15 years.

I use disposable and a gel type shaving cream, and have not had any problems, so no advice there.

But I do my shaving IN the shower with a "supposedly fogless" mirror and can't imagine how the job could be done at the bathroom sink.

I shave my head about every other day. I actually prefer the Gillette Mache 3 over their Proglide for my head. When I don't have a beard I use the Proglide for my face.
I tried a Phillips Norelco electric razor early on and it was okay, but it was not as close as the manual razor and really wasn't much of a time saver. Plus the blades are expensive to replace for the Phillips Norelco.
This past year I started to shave in the shower and have found that to make things easier. Definitely get a fogless mirror.

I haven’t tried the Fusion Pro yet, the Mach 3 didn’t really do it for me either. Seems like maybe a good quality shaving soap/cream like your Van Der Hagan should help. I’ve been shaving in the shower for a bit, definitely prefer that.

    How about after shaves?

    Thanks for the input

Every other day for 25 yrs or more, in the shower, no mirror, most anything with 3 blades. Find a shaving cream that you like, probably my favorite is the cheap bar soap from hotels

I don’t use aftershaves at all. Never had a use for them as they irritated my skin more actually. The Mach 3’s were always good to me but the fusion pro glides (shield specifically) are on another level.

I am a believer in Gillette. The white ones are great. The blue one gel thing wears down too easily. I too have sensitive skin so I completely understand. I bic my head every other day.

I know this sounds crazy when I Bic my head I just use hot water and bar soap. Single blade razor blue one from Walmart with German blades. That is after I have my way with clippers. I don't shave my face very often. But I do it the same way have for over 20 years now. Except my top lip I use the wife's shaving cream for that and hot water.

This has come up before I believe. But I've been using dollar shave club for a few years. I use their shave butter and their 6 blade razor (5 and 1 setup). I've been pretty happy with them and the price makes it better. Plus shipping to my house without me going out and buying them is nice. I shave my head every other day at night after a shower so it softens the skin and hair. I like the shave butter more than shaving foams/creams. I started shaving some of my face recently, but typically bearded. I'll be back bearded again in January.

Yes works very well, takes probably less than 1 minute. Dome only for me, before/after the shower or anytime, charge lasts a long time and cleans fairly easily. Dump and swish the blades under hot water and a deep clean a time or two. Had it for about 8 months.

If you can afford it then try men's Clinique shave gel and your regular razor. It's stunning the difference between this product and your standard run-of-the-mill retail shave gel/cream.

Full disclosure. I don't shave my head. But DO shave "the boys."

Still have my hair, for now, so I can share what I’ve learned.. at least the face/neck part).

Have super sensitive skin as well. I start off with a nice warm/hot shower to soften everything up. Use good ole cheap barbasol sensitive skin (green can) and use my eBay Gillette safety razor with an astra superior stainless blade. Shave in two directions on the face: down (with grain), left or right (90* to grain), and two on neck: up and down (one will be with, one against grain). After shaving I hit my face quickly with an alum block to tighten things up. Rinse that with water. Pat fry face and then throw on some Thayer witch hazel with aloe to soften things up.

    a couple suggestions/takeaways
    • I’d suggest sticking with the safety razor. But you need to find the right razor and the right blade. My razor is a 1952 Gillette I got off eBay that I doubt will ever break. Made in USA. I bought the 100 variety pack of blades of 20 different types/ 5 blades each. I thought for sure I’d be cool and used feathers. Nope. Ripped my skin to shreds. Find the razor and blade combo that works for you.
    • Find the products that work for you. Some gels will be too thick and not let the razor plant itself on the skin and give a poor shave/tugging. Some too thin and will let it dig in.
    • Get a routine and make shaving fun. Take your time; can’t rush a good shave. Put on some tunes and enjoy.
    • Join badger and blade if you really want to get into it. There are people on there as passionate about their shaves as we are about our tundras.
    Have fun and enjoy!

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
I shave my head, and my neck along with my upper cheeks since I can grow hair all the way up to my cheek bones like a caveman.

I use a double edge safety razor, and I’m looking to upgrade that to a slant razor with an adjustable comb.

Blades make a big difference. Go to the Razor Emporium and get a sample pack, see which blade gets along with your skin, in your razor, with your shave cream. They rate them for aggressiveness and seem to be pretty accurate. I use Feather blades and those are the sharpest most aggressive on the market. Great for a first pass with the grain, and then swap out to a milder blade for any further passes.

If you’re using some Uber shitty spray foam shaving cream you are not helping your cause. I use Proraso, or Taylor of Old Bond Street, and a badger hair brush. Once you figure out the right ratio of shave cream to water (you’ll feel it under the razor) creating the lather on your face or scalp helps a lot. Do it on your face or scalp not entirely in a bowl, the brush helps exfoliate your skin and stand up all the hairs and work the shave cream in. If you want to use a pre shave oil by all means have at it.

I find the Proraso shave cream to be the more forgiving of too much or too little water in the brush. I use the Sandalwood scent they make for coarse beards. They offer a cream for sensitive skin.

The TOBS shave cream is excellent though once you figure it out, and the fragrances they offer will make you and your lady very happy. I’m particularly fond of their tobacco leaf shave cream, if you could somehow take the essence of a snobby 1800’s English gentleman’s club: fine wood bookcases, leather bound books, leather chairs, fine tobacco, and obnoxiously expensive scotch… turn into a paste then lather it up and put it on your face to shave with, well you get the point. TOBS also offers a sensitive skin formula.

Aftershave I use Proraso aftershave skin balm. The white stuff that has tea leaf oil in it. It’s the best, period, hands down. Don’t put friggin alcohol aftershave on your skin, it makes irritation worse.

Also as much as it sucks, if you’re not generously dousing your face and scalp in cold water immediately after shaving you’re doing it wrong. Closes up the pores and helps reduce irritation.

Pat dry with towel then apply aftershave balm.

I also shave at night before bed if possible, gives your skin time to settle down by morning.

    Shower then shave

Buy a synthetic shave brush, some Proraso shave cream in the tube and learn to lather with a brush vs using a canned cream or gel.

Invest in a DE razor and some blades (blades are pennies and last a week). Your razor can be as cheap as a $30 Merkur or Edwin Jagger or $700 Wolfman stainless steel. I use a Stainless Steel RazoRock that cost about $50 and a RazoRock $15 synthetic, which is as good as badger brushes that cost upwards of $400.

Old School wet shaving is far better for your skin and shave quality. There is a small learning curve, but it's worth it. It's also significantly cheaper in the long road, so long as you don't buy a bunch of razors and brushes.

    To much to list:)
Wasn’t going to read the books written above about the topic so,,,,, take a hot shower and shave after the shower,, also use conditioner, and I belong to one of those mail your blades to ya so other than any good twin blade that be the short version!!:)

you’ll be very surprised how effortlessly shaving is AFTER the shower!!!:) Try just an Aloe soap also??

For me, a gillette mach 3 or pro fusion on the dome works just fine. My face and neck I use a DE razor to avoid irritation and razor burn. Been shaving my dome so long its tough as leather.

Check out https://www.westcoastshaving.com/. Give them a call and tell them what’s going on. They’ll be able to make some good recommendations for you. I personally use a Henson Shaving safety razor with Astra blades. A single blade will cause less irritation. Also use shave soaps over shaving creams. They lather much nicer and don’t dry your skin like shaving creams do.

Mines personally not bad. I spend about 50-75 bucks a year between blades/shave butter, and aftershave balm.

Depends on how you shave. I have a beard; but regularly shave my neck/part of my chin, and my cheeks. Even before I grew a beard I was using a safety razor; and not counting the initial cash outlay of about $75 for shaving soap, a handle, bowl, etc., a 100-pack of Feather blades cost $30-$40 or so...and that lasts me, at the least, 2-3 years.

Double edge safety razor blades are dirt cheap. Plus they’re better blades than cartridge razors.

I bought about a hundred Feather blades 3 years ago, and just had to reorder more last month. Cost me $37.00 and I’m good for another 2-3 years.

Cartridge razors are a total ripoff.

Good shave creams that you lather with a brush also give you more bang for your buck. I’m guessing I have 75-100 shaves out of a tub of Taylor of Old Bond Street shave soap/paste or Proraso tube. Both cost about $20, work better than spray can bullshit, smell about 1000000000000X better, and aren’t made from questionable chemicals.

Aftershave balms don’t cost that much more to get one that is nice.

    Too many, but not enough....
That really isn't bad. I haven't owned a razer blade in like 15 years. I just use scissors or a beard trimmer a few times a year lol. I remember those gillete ones from the store were stupid expensive even back then. You guys seemed to have it figured out.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
I have a beard too, but still have to shave neck and upper cheeks. Otherwise I would look like a caveman.
