Gonna Plasta dip my rims today. I need some opinions from all takers. Should I plasta dip my lugs or leave them chrome. Wanted to offset, but not sure

I plastic dipped some fake bolts on my monster XD's. I went wheeling Friday afternoon. WhenI got back, most of the plastic dip was scratched off somewhat on several bolts on each rim. That's with 5 coats. I wouldn't recommend using on rims if your are wheeling in areas with a lot of wheel high brush/branches. I'm not going to redo plastic dip every time I come back from 4 wheeling. I gave it shot. Not for me. (glad I didn't do my bumpers)

Whats gonna happen every time you have your tires rotated? When the tech slides the socket over your lugs its probably going to mar them up!

Thanks guys, not doing anything off-road, and the wheels are going to be temporary. I didn't think about rotation, I will leave them chrome and post pic when I'm done

Personally I would not dip the wheels or any other item that sees heavy traffic (e.g., step boards, front bumper). I just hate having to redo the same thing over again. But it's just me.

Just on the color scheme, I personally like black wheels with some contrast. I would leave the lugs as they are.

i plasti dipped my stock wheels. i only painted the face. so you could see aluminum on the sides and had contrast. yea dont paint lugs. i never had any issues with peeling. but i also didnt ride with them too long. i had them no longer than year. but it held up against car washes and etc.

I used plasti dip on my Tacoma to get rid of the chrome grille and rear bumper. Had it on there for two years no issues. It is all on how you apply it because if you do not allow enough time between coats (2 hours minimum is what I found works best) and apply too thick of a coat, the plasti dip will not hold up well. It says to apply a coat until object appears "wet" or something like that. FALSE. Treat it like a spray paint. MANY, light coats. 15-20 coats. You will know you have done a good plasti dip job if your entire surface feels smooth. It will also take a few weeks to fully harden so don't go wheeling right away. Personally I agree with matluth and robie56 on the wheel part though. It's not worth the time to do all four wheels only to have the shop/dealer use a pneumatic on your nuts and ruin all your time and effort.

Ok here's the finished product, I had wheels rotated not long ago so I'm good for a while. This truck has been babied and no off-road. This is also temporary until I can afford the rims I want. Looks a lot better blacked out. Any thoughts on thisuploadfromtaptalk1435521624740.jpguploadfromtaptalk1435521633277.jpg

Looks good. FYI you can use aerospace 303 on them to help protect the plasti dip, use an old t-shirt when applying.

Plasti dip is cool stuff. Depends on placement and like you said, how it's applied. I have sage brush and some cacti on my property and I have no doubt that no matter how many coats, the sage brush or cacti will rip right thru it. Nasty stuff. It doesn't do wonders on my paint either. I applied 5 coats over the course of a week. Figured 5 coats was enough because it was rapidly becoming a pain in the ass for something purely cosmetic. My rims looked good , but not that good. This time of year I am not going to wait a few weeks for something to dry either. I'm 4 wheeling almost every weekend from here on out past hunting season.

Question about applying Plasti dip. Do you peel off the excess after each coat, or do you build up several coats then peel it off?

If you get overspray you can scratch / peel it off. If you get it running, just peel it off and start over.

Build up several coats before pealing. One coat and over spray is hard to remove. Ended up using some goo gone to get some of my overspray off.
4+ coats makes a stronger better looking coat and easier to peal off as well

Plasti dip held up quite well on my rims this weekend. I have 6 coats on the rim bolts. I used a high pressure wash on my rims this morning and no issues either.
