All exposed tooling must be inspected. But if you catch it in the store you can get a decent discount if you dont need the mistake.

Hit up some estate sales or garage sales on the last day and get rugs for cheap. Every time one wears out, or grass starts growing through, i add another on top. Over caliche with some sand to smooth it out.

i've gotten a few off the street (trash day), but nothing a pressure washer, push broom, and square shovel cant handle.

yea, i find cat and armadillo shit every now and then, but chili powder helped. And i learned that relative to body size frog shit can be ginormous.

What’s the most mileage y’all have got with the gas light on? I pushed it to 43 miles.

I'm not sure but I've driven with that light on a long time and don't think I've been able to get more than 23 gallons in. It supposedly holds 26.4 right?

The RAV4 is even worse. I'll bury the needle on empty and can only put 12 gallons back in on 15.9 gallon tank. I guess the needle must show a lot lower than it really is.

Never know when the zombies might come and you need a full tank. This is usually my strategy too.

I carried a 5 gallon can on my trip to amarillo because some of those stations are spread thin (backroads) and most arent 24hrs.

Anyone know about used BMWs? My wife drives an absolute shitbox and her uncle iss offering his 2013 BMW 5 series with 109,00 miles. Maintenance every 5k miles. I am wary of Beemers in general but maybe you guys know better. He would sell it to her for $12,500. He put $12k into last year: struts, battery, pan gasket, radiator, some wiring. It has the 6 cylinder turbo.

She does a lot of in town driving and I am not wanting to spend big money on maintenance.

Price brakes and bushings, and oil filters. warn her about the electronics. Bmw knows their niche arent still driving 2013's.

anything cool? Id shy away from a dual clutch or 4 wheel steering.

Tough call. If it were 2000-2010 I’d be more stoked on it. 2013 will have some tech which could be a PIA for trying to control budget.

and i'd run it into the ground until it needed an LS swap.

my buddy had one in college and he'd let me drive on roadtrips. We'd blast through traffic on the shoulders doing triple digits.

DON’T DO IT! He put 12k into it last year, that should be your answer on what they cost to run

My thoughts exactly and it sounds like the timing chain wasn't done either. If it was manual I might be slightly more interested but wifey doesn't drive stick anyway. She needs a reliable car as her job has her driving a lot. I think I have steered her way from this one.

    modern BMW friends' thoughts.
Just say no. Buy a Camry.

That will be a nice car that will need very regular and very not cheap maintenance.
    Timing chain is nominally forever.
I think sticks were long gone in that gen 5vr. Other than maybe the M5.
If you have to pay somebody to work on it, this will be a very expensive cheap car. That $12k is only the beginning of the midlife crisis.

Dad bought a '02 Q45 because it brings the noise between 50-100. Probably $60k new. Very nice, got it for $5k prescamdemic, but i've been crawling through it stuffing rattles, ziptying plastic, and wire tying exhaust heatshields.

    6A8473D0-95F0-4F1D-9AF1-A7464C75720A.jpg
when i replaced the radiator earlier this year i replaced the foam sealing with sliced pool noodle. Also had to stuff the keyholes with graphite. Little PITA bs everytime i get in it.

for revenge im gonna mount his lightbar to the front of the hood and cut the top of the grille. I also want to hotrod the 6 shooter projectors in the headlights. Like strobe chasers or whatever.
    D72475DD-5668-414D-9843-801C25817910.jpg

I personally dont like the car. I dont like the complicated stereo or all the buttons. Its quick, but not exciting. Its nice, but it was a rattle trap when he got it. He does get 26mpg, but its wide enough you've gotta pass parking spots.

'07 yaris is the perfect automotive appliance. Its light, but if you're careful they'll drive to the moon and back.

    I owned a 2010 535i. NEVER AGAIN.

One of the most fun cars I've ever driven in my life. Twin turbo I6, freaking beast. I got like 8mpg because I was always in it. Goddamn thing, I swear I was in the damn dealership starting around the 6mo mark, consistently, at least every 3-5 months. Something wrong. Tail light harnesses melted twice, common, but no recall from BMW (the norm). Halo for one headlight went out. Some weird shit where they needed to reflash it.

All-in-all, within the first 20 months or so of ownership, I had logged about 10 hours in dealership waiting. Waiting. Saw a lot of familiar faces while doing it, others in my predicament. And were it not for the warranty, I'd have been in it for no less than $5k-6k for the work that was done. They came at me around 22 months telling me I needed to pay another $1500 or something to extend the warranty another 18 months, 24 months, I forget. Hell naw.

I traded it in for a Camry hybrid, which basically paid all but $2,500 of the Camry. Going from 8mpg to over 30mpg was incredible.

Anyway, between my 9k, and the uncle's $12k, you know @txagg is spot-on with his comment above. My dear friend next door does this shit with her family, X5 after X5. And they're always dumping the cost of a 1GT into that damn car every 2-3 years, and I'm, like, "WHY!?" I was so stoked when they bought our old 2013 Highlander as a 2nd vehicle.

Since they bought the Highlander 12ish months ago, they've already dumped $1,800 into the X5 on a new battery (gotta program to the battery) and $3k on other BS. So basically about half what they gave us for the Highlander. They've only had to pay for gas on the Highlander. It's absurd.

    Snozzberries down there are amazing.

BMW and MB are lease/disposables. I had a 2000 e320 that I checked blue book on at around 2012. $1,000.

    Yup.

I'm sure I have better pics somewhere of the one we bought. This is all I could find in my backups from 2010. Woulda been more fun if it were a stick, but that wasn't an option, we got it for a song, 1st owners, but the dealership ran over 5k miles and had to sell used and/or knock off $$ due to laws/regs. I forget, it was dumb.

All this beemer talk confirmed what I though I knew about the brand already. I've tried to push her to get a Camry, I think the newer ones look great and its a toyota. We'll see.
