BLUF (bottom line up front): My personal advice is to stay away from Eastern Shore Toyota, Daphne Alabama on (forever) and to tell your friends.

At the expense of being considered a fool, I'm gonna tell a little story of my experience at Eastern Shore Toyota, Daphne Alabama, on 11/16/2022 at 5PM CST.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but this might be the literal definition of a bait and switch.

Backstory: I have a 1794 deal elsewhere but on a whim I start exploring other dealers because we've agreed to 'MSRP' but with add-ons I could get from Sparks cheaper. I'm not entirely happy with that but I'm not over a barrel and it's stuff added that I want to the truck I want.

Anyways, Monday, Eastern Shore Toyota has a 2023 MGM Pro on lot and is advertised for significantly less than MSRP which is a flag (#1), obviously. I talk to sales, a little back and forth, and I ask "how much is the truck?" to which he replies, "what is says on the website, when can you stop by?." Flag #2. Few days pass by and I let him know I can stop in today to also get my truck appraised. In the back of my mind the deal smells but I can at least get a second appraisal opinion. #1 is not going to be in but tells me to get ahold of salesman2 (#2) because he's got the day off. Flag #3, unless I don't really understand how car sales commission works-like why would he pass the opportunity to someone else?

I get there, #2 is 'busy' so now I get to deal with salesman3 (#3). Flag #4. Intros, she gets my info, looks for the keys...what do ya know? It just sold, imagine that and with ADM to boot. She apologizes but is very happy to let me know that they have 3 used Pros on the lot and they are listed at $89,000. I didn't bother to look on the lot because I saw it on their website earlier (my reference to the bait and switch...is it accurate?). Against my emotions I shake hands and drive the hour back home. In and out 10 minutes.

Full disclosure: Most of my instinct knew this wouldn't have a happy ending. Shenanigans were expected and it was acceptable risk. I wasted 2.5 hours and some gas but I work from home now and don't get out as much. I did it for science!

Feel free to AMA except my IQ because I really don't know. Insults welcome if passed off as constructive criticism.

Definitely sucks, and if nothing else, I'd make a call to Toyota and explain this scenario in detail to them as well. They probably won't do anything, but if they get enough complaints they may have a 'friendly' conversation w/ the dealership about how they are representing them. For the most part, the vehicle is owned by the dealer and they can kinda do what they want, but they do have an agreement w/Toyota to represent them (Toyota) and their product(s) appropriately.

For what it's worth, a few Ford dealers had apparently taken deposits on the new Lightnings when they were first coming out. Apparently, several dealers began contacting their customers who had 'contracted' deposits on the vehicles and was telling them 'we know we agreed to this price, but if you now want your truck it will cost you X amount of $$ more given the current market; or you can pass on it and we'll sell it to someone else'... Every state has their own laws and is different, but to me that seemed like an obvious 'breach of contract'. Anyhow, enough customers complained about this practice to Ford, that they apparently looked into it and subsequently ended up putting out a letter/email notice to their dealerships regarding similar practice. The letter told the dealerships that Ford's relationships w/its customers would not be jeopardized by these types of practices, and if dealerships were found to be conducting unfair business practices they would risk losing future allocations of Ford's limited inventory/production.

Don't know how much it helped, but at least it was something.

Anyhow, there are dealers out there conducting 'reasonable' business, and I hope you find something you like at a fair price.

Regarding time spent, I think these days, unless you know someone or have a good relationship with a dealer, you're gonna spend some time. Either driving or on the phone searching for what you want.

Last year, when I decided that I was not going to purchase a Gen3 (after seeing the release, etc.), I began to scramble to find one of the remaining '21 PROs. My local dealers (in state) had a few coming in, but wanted huge mark ups. I spent almost 2 months calling dealers every few mornings to check on allocations, etc. and finally came across one at a fair price. Immediately locked in a purchase w/a CC deposit and began making arrangements for transport. It cost me $2k to have it shipped, but still much cheaper than I would have paid locally. In my case, I spent several hours on the phone to make it happen and just got lucky w/my timing and the availability of the truck.

Talked to a salesperson at Toyota of Dallas today on the phone about a Tundra TRD Pro they're getting next week. Over the phone, he led me to believe that a deal could be made close to MSRP, so I drove ~45 minutes there to see if we could figure something out.

Was met with a 40k markup. What a bunch of clowns.

Only $300 for nitrogen, that's an excellent deal for such a rare commodity

Holy cow these guys are on some serious drugs. TIL you could get the 5.7L in 2023! No doubt that's the reason for the $100k+ truck price - a true unicorn!!!!

Question about those bottom line items totaling $6070.94 - are those real taxes??? "Dealer Inventory Tax", "Finance Tax"?? What is THAT all about???

5.7L and AWD, I could get behind that truck for sure

 

I bought a 2022 SR5 TRD Sport Premium on Oct 26 listed at $4500 under list. They screwed me a bit with $799 window tint and a high interest rate I will quickly refi. Still drove it out the door under list with 6.5% taxes. It had been on lot < week.

The market is softening.

Slowly getting better at some dealerships. This one used to be $5K+ above MSRP on all tundras.

 

Long story short, when I was informing a salesperson (with dealer charging $5,000 markup) that I was going to purchase from another dealer who wasn't charging a markup--he replied with the following text:

"If a dealer is not adding a markup then they will more than likely not receive the truck due to Toyota preferencing dealerships and customers that place a deposit over those that do not, and then they preference volume dealerships like us that sell the most Toyotas."

Just curious if anyone else has been told this. By the way, I am putting down a deposit which will go towards the cost of the vehicle and am getting the vehicle (2023 Tundra TRD Pro) at MSRP.

 

This is absolutely not true, at least in my area. There are three dealerships in Richmond that do not charge over MSRP, and they consistently get more allocations than the ones that do. I am not sure why anyone in my area even considers paying an ADM. The three referenced dealerships always have inventory on the lot. The only thing you have to wait for is a TRD Pro or a specific build. The ones that charge an ADM around me are the smaller volume dealerships.

 

That is not true.

 

I'd ask if you buy a truck from them if they will toss in a bridge from Brooklyn to go along with the Lojack, paint protection film, and window tint they are selling to you at their cost for only $3,999.

It's also mighty big of them to apply the deposit to the cost of the vehicle.

I'm in the DC area with quite a bit of dealers around me. Most advertising a markup but a quick call and they're willing to remove that completely. I did have a dealer tell me a few weeks ago that they wanted a $15K markup on a TRD Pro, which I responded with "cool story, I asked about a platinum" . We couldn't get anywhere and I told them last week in put a deposit down at another dealership. Guy called today saying they have a TRD Pro arriving this afternoon and would remove the adjustment if I want it. Supposedly hybrids are driving an ADM but my eyes roll with that too.

Side note: I put a deposit down on a '23 4x4 platinum hybrid with no markup two weeks ago. It's already built, just waiting until end of Dec for delivery. They offered me a 2022 platinum in white that comes next week, but I'm digging this blueprint color (hope it looks as good in person) and it's a 23 vs a 22. The 2022 was $500 below MSRP.

 

I have just purchased a WCP 1794 TRD OR in Los Angles for MSRP with no dealer add ons. It was NOT an easy process and required some serious hard balling from me. I have been after this specific setup for a while, only now am seeing dealers cave for MSRP. Stay strong when negotiating, the tides are turning. Dealers know it, but you need to be stubborn enough to get senior management involved.

 

Inching closer to $4,000 off msrp. If one of those was a 4x4 Limited with a 6.5ft bed i'd offer $4,000 off and see if they would bite.

 

What they are telling you is a total BS. I heard tons of weird explanation for the Mark ups during my search, none of that makes sense. I had deposit with 2 dealers, and I had to cancel the third because they contacted me asking for 5K over MSRP. those are large Toyota dealers in my area, and guess, what nothing happened in the last 7 months. Finally found 1794 with TRD off-road being sold by family owned dealer who gave me a decent discount below MSRP, and no BS add ons. It was not an easy straightforward purchase. I call certain dealers regularly to ask what's coming every 5th and 19th of the month, add to that how hard it is to negotiate and stand your ground while part of me wants to pay MSRP and get done with it. perseverance and patience will pay off, stay strong everyone

 

I was looking at a Telluride for the wife and they had all kinds of those same bs reasons, they wanted 10-12% over MSRP and said that doesnt impact the value of the vehicle going forward, etc, I was like ya ok. They said everyone is marking things up like that, I said no they arent, but whatever.

They said there is a market adjustment on the new Telluride and here is your trade in value. I said ok, but you forgot to add in my market adjustment for my trade in which is equal to your market adjustment on the new one, HA

the dude just looked at me with a blank stare. At that point I knew I was walking out anyway.

I wouldn’t be surprised. 4 months ago they were 6-7k off. Now they are 7-10k off depending on model. They have pictures of a ton on their lot so honestly they may be accurate.

I get it. All dealers suck and cheat. Chrysler dealers are very special. Still rooted in sub prime loans to Charger and Challenger buyer
