Right on! Not the anger towards another but the lesson to be Prepared.

I'd like to go visit the memorial sooner than later...

She wasn't in Pearl Harbor but was named after V Adm Aubrey Fitch who served as Commander of Aircraft, S Pacific Force in WWII.

She was also my home for a time.

Never forget. My grandfather was WW2 Army in the pacific. I learned as a young man what happened that day. He was there after before getting shipped out to Saipan and Philippines. He hated the Japanese a lot.

Very interesting how war can sometimes blanket as a whole hateful feelings towards a ethnic group. I’ve been asked if I don’t like Arabs due to my time in the Middle East. I always give the same answer “The war is over, and from my standpoint so is the conflict within.”

My Grandfather was there and luckily survived. He spent the rest of his life helping families of fallen sailors. Every December he would endure the weather on the roadways and deliver gifts across the country. He had 15 of his own children and three intense labor jobs at the same time. Great mentor and my favorite fishing partner ever!! Thanks for remembering!:hattip::oldglory:

I know how that hate part really well. Almost identical situation here. Lucky for me, I didn't get married to my Asian wife until after Grandpa passed. Really would have been impossible to choose sides.

I'm Asian and my grandfather never treated me differently despite fighting in the Korean War. He was the best man I've ever known.

Other family members, weren't as kind.

Yep, I have over a hundred cousins. Mostly in Wisconsin. We occupy almost entire campgrounds for family reunion events. So much fun to have our own buffet in the huge circus style tent. Sad part is, we also have many funerals to deal with. Sorry to derail!

If you need any more of a reason to vacation to the Hawaiian islands, I recommend going to the memorial. Took my family to the memorial in 2017. It was a very quiet car ride back to the condo.

I didn't get a chance to go out to the USS Arizona memorial due to the massive line when we were there but we did visit the USS Missouri. Definitely a humbling and sobering experience.

*Bringing this over here @Black Wolf so we don’t tie up the raffle thread.

    I can imagine.
    Thanks for his service.

    That’s kinda crazy.
My PaPa was a Lt. on shore as well.:)
    He was in the barracks.
He was the reason I joined the navy.
The stories he’s shared were not pleasant and were quite graphic.
I still can not imagine going through that.

Not long before he passed, my older brother Mark was visiting him. My brother was a Marine grunt in Nam. He told my brother. Needless to say my brother was stunned. My Dad never mentioned it to me. My Dad was a Marine aviator.

The greatest generations. And they're leaving us...

My dad was a sailor in Nam. He beat the draft and picked the Navy thinking it was safest.

His ship was the USS Oriskany. In 1966 a magnesium fire burned through 5 decks and killed 44 sailors. Some of those poor souls were his friends. He never speaks about it and I never ask.

No family at Pearl, but some in Normandy. My parents were in Hawaii for their honeymoon and the film Tora Tora Tora was being shot. They said it was very surreal having the Japanese marked planes flying overhead. They have some photos in an album God knows where.

    greatest generation indeed.
Grandfather was in the CIC under Patton. Started in North Africa and eventually worked north. Towards the end was involved in the liberation of Dachau. Went awol for a little bit to visit his brother in the hospital after he heard he was shot. After the war he was first stationed in Munich and then Zell am see Austria for interrogation purposes. Brought a whole bunch of stuff back with him after the war including:
    • 4 Rolex’s
    • Couple Lugers
    • German boy who lost both parents to give him a better life
    • And this:
    38A9AF66-0D4B-43FD-9378-C268C1315466.jpg

A massive nazi flag that was hung on the glockenspiel during the war. After he died my great aunt (his sister) was going through my grandfathers boxes in their childhood home, found it, and decided to air it out on their front lawn in 2005. It’s amazing what the elderly can get away with lol. Has since been donated to a museum

Very cool! Makes one wonder what goes into the landfills. Sadly, quite a bit.
