Hello, I was recently in a wreck damaging the cabin beyond repair and the issuance company had put liability on the truck with out me knowing after I had put it into my name due to my father passing away. So I decided to have my truck's cabin swapped. Hindsight 20-20 was a terrible idea, never let sentimental value cloud your thinking.

I bought a salvaged Tundra same year and cabin size but it was 2WD and my truck is 4WD. The guy that I paid to do the swap said that the 2WD cabin had the connections for the 4WD and he hooked everything up but today when I picked up the truck the 4WD doesn't work and the truck will not shift out of 1st gear. The mechanic told me that he didn't know what the issue was, he thought possibly the computer needs to be reprogramed and thats all he could suggest. I know I got royaly screwed. Any suggestions on what I should do would be great.

Do you have pictures of before and after? Have you read any of the codes from the check engine light?

Are you very sure the replacement cab came from the same year truck? What wiring harness was used? The original one from your truck or the one that came with the new cab?

Would you happen to have the VIN of your truck and the VIN of the cab. Breaking them down could give insight to different options between the trucks.

I have the truck at another mechanic now so hopefully he can get more information on the codes. The mechanic that did the cab swap kept the wiring harnnes from the 2WD cab claiming that it had the connections for the 4WD. Here is the vin for the 2WD Tundra 5TFEW5F11GX205412 used for parts and this is the vin for the 4WD Tundra 5TFDW5F14GX547173.

This is why I had the cab replaced it was rolled, but it was a very slow roll and and it only sustained body damage.

You paid that mechanic to do a job and it's not done. The first mechanic either needs to finish the job, or provide at least a partial refund.

I have already talked to him about it and he told me that the computer needs to be reflashed and he told me that he couldn't due to him not having an updated ob2. He never offered any money back and in fact while he was doing the cab swap he upped the amount that was agreed.

So you swapped the cab and front end onto the quicksand colored truck and had your bed repainted to be silver now? How badly was the silver parts truck damaged when you started?

Here are the specs for both. Interesting that they are both 2016 and flexfuel, your good truck is a TRD Pro in Quicksand color, the parts truck a SR5. The problem is going to be if the SR5 body harness is not prewired for the 4x4 connections. Did the mechanic even has a connecter to plug in the 4x4 computer?

Really need to see the trouble codes out of it to be able to tell what is going on. Could be that new cab is just missing some wiring that was present on the old one.

Thats what I'm guessing, he said that there was a 4x4 connector on the 2WD cab but that doesn't mean it's wired correctly.

Yeah, thats what I'm getting at. I paid the guy $14,000 to swap the cabs and fix and paint the bed. So at this point I can't really afford to buy a new harness and have someone put it in. I would like to get it to atleast run properly and sell it to someone who can fix it properly.

It can be fixed. First thing I am doing is getting Techstream or a good code reader hooked up. It will most likely tell you what the ecu is not seeing/missing.

Once the problem is isolated it’s decision between swapping the original dash harness from the TRD Pro back in or adding/modifying the new 2wd one. Simply things like power, ground, fuse for the 4wd drive system is where I would start.

Could be something easy like the 4wd ecu just doesn’t have power or it could be that the wiring and connector for the 4wd ecu doesn’t even exist.

Someone is going to have to dig into it. Trouble codes from Techstream would be a huge help to start.

Okay, there is a mechanic that is looking at it today. So hopefully they can get those codes.

This might help him also. Its the full wiring for the 4WD circuit. Trust me when I say it looks alot more complicated than it is.

If you get trouble codes from him post them here and we will see what the truck is thinking ect.

So I have talked to the Mechanic and he seems to think that it is computer related. They are talking to Toyota about replacing it. I have the computer from the original cab that they tried but the truck will not even start with it.

What are the trouble codes? This is will lead to the issue. It sounds like you still have a communication issue. Are you using the right key that is matched with the security ecu that is in the truck?

Yes, I also have the keys from the other cab. I will have to call tommorow to see if I can get the codes. All the guy that I talked to told me that the mechanic thats working on it thinks that the computer needs to be replaced.

So I finally heard back from the mech they had to move the truck to their other shop. And they said that the code that they got leads to one of the shift solenoids. They are going to drop the transmission pan and test them.

They tested the solenoids and the shift solenoid b is apparently the issue, total of $1,100 bucks to fix. Hopefully that will be the last of the issues.

But you have still not test driven the truck yet correct? Hopefully it is fixed now

OP, sorry you’re having such trouble with your troubles. Not to throw gas on the dumpster fire, but that bed isn’t color matched very well to the cab. Original mechanic did an unsatisfactory job and should be held accountable. So many times they get paid for unfinished or unsatisfactory work and just skate off in to the sunset. Hope you get it sorted.

This "dumpster fire" is probably the dumbest mistake I have ever made. It was my father's truck and I wanted it to get it fixed due to sentimental reasons but that was the beginning of the mistake lol
