They have over 100 ft on the right to slow down or speed up!

You mean the people on the interstate? They shouldn't be changing speed. They remain a constant variable and the merging traffic adjusts as needed to what is available, including stopping if required.

That’s exactly what I mean (not the people on the interstate, the one merging). They have over a 100 ft in front of them to merge into the right hand lane, but they just stop and wait for no traffic!

Here both parties are responsible to adjust their speeds to allow vehicles to merge safely.

Ah, that's a little different. Merging traffic is always supposed to yield as I understand it. Who knows, maybe they've changed things here in the States.

I think what Rosy is referring to is the common courtesy while driving. Many have forgotten it. The loss of common courtesy is why it is now the law in many states to move the left lane to go around law enforcement or ambulances pulled over on the right side of the highway. That was always automatic for me. I was surprised when I found out they had to make it a law.

That might explain some of the behavior I see where people merging expect people on the interstate to speed up and slow down for them. It’s the other way around here in MA.

I wouldn't advise it since the impact would be on the driver side of your truck. I would recommend deep breaths.

I believe here the law is to either move over or slow down to ~35-40. I hate people who do both.

That being said, in my opinion, it's still the responsibility of the merging car to get up to freeway speed.

The worse is a chain of people merging onto the interstate who assume if they tag behind the person in front of them, they're not responsible for merging, the people on the interstate have to slow down for them which unfortunately is true unless you want to slam into them.

Kind of like the line of people tagging behind one another taking a left turn at a light and won't let you get across the intersection.

There would be an army of old people marching on Washington DC if they made people re-instate their license every 10 years. Not a favorable thing to do as a politician.

    More like political suicide.

Yes, most states have some type of Move Over statute/law on the books now. This came about because so many 1st responders were getting hit/injured/killed while working at incidents in or near the roadway because, well, people. Unfortunately, IMO as a 1st responder (FF) myself, a lot of these laws don’t have enough teeth. I actually teach a traffic management class and it always amazes me that I have had to actually explain the law to LEO at some of my scenes.

It can be convoluted... I don't recall exactly where (I'm thinking Missouri?) but I've seen yield signs at the end of on ramps. And I'm sure (again don't remember where) I've seen a stop sign at the end of an on ramp before too. So a little consistency would be nice. Also think I've blown by a "Speed Limit 40" sign on an on ramp too. Or maybe these were all bad dreams I was having? Anyone else cime across any of these?

The speed limit signs on our on and off ramps are yellow, meaning they're suggestions for truckers and you can generally safely drive at least 10-15 mph faster than what they say in a car.

I've occasionally seen a yield sign where there should be a merge sign but it's pretty rare. The other law we have is where on ramps and off ramps take up the same space (for example at clover leafs), traffic trying to get on the highway has to yield to traffic trying to get off the highway.

They have red/green stop lights for some on ramps in Phoenix. Just another reason I hate it whenever I have to drive up there.

Have them in Denver too. It's to help keep the flow of traffic on the highway consistent, instead of having a huge line of cars all try and get on the highway at the same time clogging up that first lane, then creating a backup to the previous onramp and so on

Think of it this way, merging traffic must yield unless otherwise indicated. Kind of like some towns that say the city speed limit is XX MPH unless specified differently. So, an on ramp with no signs means traffic yields, one with a yield sign means idiots have caused accidents and they figure that a reminder will help, stop signs mean that there is high enough traffic they want merging traffic to really pay attention to WTH they are doing, and lights are for those who can't read.

As for the speed limits, I've only ever seen them on off ramps.

    Some.
Spilled 1/8 cup of concentrated peppermint oil on the only jacket I have and won't be going back into town for almost a week to do laundry. Sitting in my truck at work and this shyt burns the eyes/nose/throat. But, my sinuses are clear.
Set my buddy heater on the passenger seat and as it warms up my jacket, I can see the vapor rolling up from the oil.
