The 2017 SR I had was nice as it was dechromed from the factory and had no Toyota Safety Sense, kept it really simple. Not having intermittent wipers was annoying. Also not having a sliding window for 12ft+ pieces of wood was also annoying. Current SR5 is ideal as it still has the bench seat while getting Carplay and common features (intermittent wipers lol). Also no sun roof as my head hits the lower ceiling is a must. The higher trims all seemed to get rid of the bench seat and add sun roofs which I just didn’t find appealing, losing out on the additional features. Might be some unicorn TRD Pro with bench seat, no sun roof double-cab lurking out there. Having sat (or attempted) in back of a 2022 double-cab, Toyota killed that for me, would have to go Crewmax with 6.5ft bed (too many cons).

While I appreciate having the trans cooler on my 2018, I don’t feel it being removed for 2019+ has any meaningful long term reliability concerns.

So would definitely say 2020+ Platinum due to the convenience of proximity entry, push button start, shark fin antenna, CarPlay, etc. Then add color matched door handles / mirror caps, TRD Pro Fox shocks, and whatever wheels / tire combo you wanted.

Truck to last the rest of your life.

Honestly I hate automatics so if I were to buy another truck it might have to be a Tacoma. Otherwise, I have a limited but I really wish I had the front bench seat, so I think that’s a downgrade in trim level.

Would get the JBL system and maybe if I was feeling frisky the 4x4

The only thing I would like that my SR5 doesn't have that the Limited has is dual-zone climate control.
But then again, my wife only rides in my truck maybe 6 days a month.

I've added Katzkin leather, heated seats, puddle lights, and a shitload of other mods.
Actually had Limited leather when I bought it new but it got a little flaky after 3 years.

If my 2014 got totaled, God forbid, I would be looking for a 2020 or 2021 Limited double cab.
If I couldn't find one, maybe a 2020 or 2021 Platinum, but I would miss my 6' bed..

No way would I buy a 2022 or 2023 for several years...

Only been a week for me but still very happy with 21 1794 edition. I suppose one thing I wish it had is wireless android (apple for my wife). I had installed an Atoto S8 android head unit with dashcam and virtual surround view backup camera in our 04 F250 only few months ago before it died (powerstroke crap). I liked the setup because I'm an Android guy, wife wasn't thrilled, so she is opposed to replacing factory in 1794 with it, prefers hard buttons over software. I sort of see her point.

Exact reason I went with the SR5 package…only thing I didn’t like was the chrome…for less than a grand was able to get everything color matched.

thanks, yea I know. But seems any adapter that does both are junk. So have to buy two, then would be switching adapters between android and apple, not much different then switching usb-c to lightning on end of cord. Ah well, first world problems.

Did they ever make a TRD Pro with a bench seat?

In recent years they stopped offering the bench seat/moon roof option. I would have liked that, but I hear what you are saying that it makes the roof lower.

Toyota used to offer a bench with moonroof, but I think they did away with that around 2010.
Bench seat no longer available in 2022, nor regular cab.

It took me a while to find my '20 Limited with all the "base" functions I wanted. This was back in 2019 and for some reason not a lot of dealers in MD carried very many with varying options.

Heated seats, leather (that good Toyota fake stuff :)), sunroof, bedliner, TRD exhaust, etc. I knew I wouldn't keep it stock for long exterior wise so I'd be wasting money on a Pro and I'm a basic man...those interior amenities were at my wife's request. As long as it checked her boxes, I knew I'd be fine. I can't keep any vehicle stock for long so I knew I'd build it better than a Pro anyways. :stirthepot:

Agreed, mine is a 2016, but don't understand why it doesn't have heated seats, the parking sensors, and memory seats/mirrors.

This is a good question. The only thing I can’t get in my truck through mods is a front bench seat with a column shifter. But then I wouldn’t have dual climate, and my wife likes it about 6-10º warmer on her side. I bought my truck right at the beginning of the supply shortage before prices went nuts, so I can’t really complain. It has been a very good truck to me, so I will probably just keep it and mod it.

The big things that I could’ve bought a higher trim level to have are seat heaters (if I decide to install leather, it will definitely be with heaters) and tow mirrors with BSM. But I’m happy to keep mine and mod it in my driveway.

If I could wave the magic wand I would add the TRD exhaust (love that sound), remote start, LED headlights, heated steering wheel, rear window defroster, and finally the power back window, probably in that order. Adding some of these will keep me busy, and broke, in the coming year I'm sure. First up is going to be dirty deeds exhaust as I think I miss that sound the most, although order may change if I have to keep going out and sitting in truck to wait for warm up due to ice on the windshield, not the easiest to get to with a scraper.

Only other color I see and think I would consider is the Army green although a wrap in matte green like that is a consideration too.

When I bought my '21, I wanted either a Platinum or a 1794, with a slight preference to the Platinum, due to less chrome. All that was available at the time was a 1794 with TRD Off Road, so I went with that and deleted the chrome myself. Added tow mirrors and a transmission oil cooler. No regrets in the trim choice, as the only things lacking in my truck that I want are a heated steering wheel and auto wipers, but seeing as how they're not offered on any 2.5 gen Tundra it's a moot point.

I absolutely love my truck, but with that said, I am not sure that I'd buy it again today if I needed to. I'd explore some other options with higher payload, including the 3rd gens, but I would also (somewhat apprehensively) look at the domestics. Mine is absolutely at the max while towing, and I'd rather have some breathing room.
